Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 27: Organ for Young Latter-Day Saints; September 1, 1892 We have often made the statement, and believe it to be capable of proof, that for the number of people in Utah there is as large a proportion of the descendants of New England families as can be found in any part of the United States, not excepting New England itself. The early members of the Church were nearly all of New England birth or parentage, and they have left their impress upon the people called Latter-day Saints. The gospel has been the means of saving them from the evils into which many of their compatriots have fallen. And so it will be with all nationalities. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be to the modern world as Noah's ark was to the ancient world. It Will be the means of sav ing the best, as we hope, and the honest of all nations, to be the founders of a new race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 19: Organ for Young Latter-Day Saints; July 15, 1884 With light hearts the children worked their way through the narrow passage to the shore where a few large boulders afforded them places for standing and sitting at a little dis tance from the almost perpendicular wall which kept back the sea. Here they shouted until their voices failed them, and then mournfully waited and watched for relief during the long, dreary night. But their waiting was in vain, as no ship came near. The next day passed and still there was no sign of help. Towards evening a sail was seen in the distance which gradually became more distinct, still it did not seem to the children to be heading towards them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 19: Organ for Young Latter-Day Saints; November 15, 1884 At the time of the revolt Jeroboam, finding himself at the head of the larger portion of the nation, began to fear that his subjects would return to their allegiance if they continued to go up to Jerusalem to worship at the temple. He there fore erected two idols, one in Bethel and the other in Dan, and before these he commanded the people to assemble instead of going up to Jerusalem. This was the introduction of a corruption into the Israelitish kingdom from which it never recovered. After a reign of a little more than three years Abijah, king of Judah, died, and was succeeded by his son Asa. About the same time Jeroboam, king of Israel, also died. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 19: Organ for Young Latter-Day Saints; June 1, 1884 It is fortunate for the youth of these valleys that they are not, through force of circumstances, compelled to follow such a hazardous occupation in order to procure a livelihood. But there are some few, however, in this Territory who, in a fig urative sense, go to sea, contrary to the wishes of their parents. That is, they leave their homes for other parts of the country, in search of fame or fortune, but invariably return in possession of neither one. Or, if they do not go away from home, they depart from the teachings of their parents and act contrary to their wishes. Young men of this class are a source of grief to their parents, and cause them much anxiety and uneasiness respecting their welfare. They cannot enjoy any happiness themselves, for happiness does not attend those who are disobedient. And if they ever obtain wealth or renown by taking such a course, (and it is very unlikely that they will) it will not prove a comfort or satisfaction to them. But, like those who run away and go to sea, they will ever feel that they have taken the wrong course, and the object for which they set out is not to be gained in that way. Children may as well learn by the experience of others as by their own, (for it costs much less) that the best place on earth is home. Do not be dazzled with the glare of foolish imagin etions, so that you cannot see the beauties that surround your own homes. Remember that distance only lends enchantment to unrealities. If you want to find genuine happiness and pleasure, if you wish to gain real honor or wealth, seek them at home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 17: Organ for Young Latter-Day Saints; May 15, 1882 Under another act of Congress also, if any slaves were captured or should run away from their masters who were in rebellion, they too were made free. To show the bent of Abraham Lincoln's mind upon this subject, we quote from a dispatch, which he sent to Horace Greeley in August, 1862: If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them. My paramount object is to save the Union and not either to save or destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it; if I could save it by freeing all' the slaves, I would do.it, and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that. I have here stated my purpose according to my views of official duty, and I intend no modification of my oft-repeated personal wish that all men everywhere should be free. He was not even then prepared to abolish slavery, but, driven along by the war and its necessities, he soon found himself in a. Position where he felt that he must either strike a blow at slavery and thus weaken the rebellion, or run the risk of having the old government overthrown. So, on the 22ud of September, 1862, he gave notice of his intention to issue on the let of January, 1863, a proclamation of freedom of the slaves in the States in rebellion. With a sickle or crooked knife the tufts of grain are cut and bound in bundles. They are then taken to the threshing oors, where a ail is commonly used for threshing the stocks. The winnowing machine which is used is almost exactly like those we have, thus leading to the belief that we borrowed this useful invention from the Chinese. We had a matting spread for us, and took our places near the judge, who was an exceedingly handsome and venerable looking Raj poet of the purest type, dressed in pure white flow ing robes, his white beard falling over his breast, a white tur ban ou his head, beneath which his kindly eyes looked so tender and sympathetic that it seemed impossible he could have the moral courage to condemn any one to death. At the hour appointed, a small door at the extreme end of the hall opened, and the prisoner was led in by two tall Raj poot soldiers in full armor, with sword and shield, and bows and arrows.
