Book Transformational Change Efforts Student Engagement in Mathematics through an Institutional Network for Active Learning

Download or read book Transformational Change Efforts Student Engagement in Mathematics through an Institutional Network for Active Learning written by Wendy M. Smith and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this handbook is to help launch institutional transformations in mathematics departments to improve student success. We report findings from the Student Engagement in Mathematics through an Institutional Network for Active Learning (SEMINAL) study. SEMINAL's purpose is to help change agents, those looking to (or currently attempting to) enact change within mathematics departments and beyond—trying to reform the instruction of their lower division mathematics courses in order to promote high achievement for all students. SEMINAL specifically studies the change mechanisms that allow postsecondary institutions to incorporate and sustain active learning in Precalculus to Calculus 2 learning environments. Out of the approximately 2.5 million students enrolled in collegiate mathematics courses each year, over 90% are enrolled in Precalculus to Calculus 2 courses. Forty-four percent of mathematics departments think active learning mathematics strategies are important for Precalculus to Calculus 2 courses, but only 15 percnt state that they are very successful at implementing them. Therefore, insights into the following research question will help with institutional transformations: What conditions, strategies, interventions and actions at the departmental and classroom levels contribute to the initiation, implementation, and institutional sustainability of active learning in the undergraduate calculus sequence (Precalculus to Calculus 2) across varied institutions?

Book Statistics Using Technology Second Edition

Download or read book Statistics Using Technology Second Edition written by Kathryn Kozak and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-12-12 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistics With Technology, Second Edition, is an introductory statistics textbook. It uses the TI-83/84 calculator and R, an open source statistical software, for all calculations. Other technology can also be used besides the TI-83/84 calculator and the software R, but these are the ones that are presented in the text. This book presents probability and statistics from a more conceptual approach, and focuses less on computation. Analysis and interpretation of data is more important than how to compute basic statistical values.

Book Advanced Calculus Revised Edition

Download or read book Advanced Calculus Revised Edition written by Lynn Harold Loomis and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-02-26 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authorised reissue of the long out of print classic textbook, Advanced Calculus by the late Dr Lynn Loomis and Dr Shlomo Sternberg both of Harvard University has been a revered but hard to find textbook for the advanced calculus course for decades. This book is based on an honors course in advanced calculus that the authors gave in the 1960's. The foundational material, presented in the unstarred sections of Chapters 1 through 11, was normally covered, but different applications of this basic material were stressed from year to year, and the book therefore contains more material than was covered in any one year. It can accordingly be used (with omissions) as a text for a year's course in advanced calculus, or as a text for a three-semester introduction to analysis. The prerequisites are a good grounding in the calculus of one variable from a mathematically rigorous point of view, together with some acquaintance with linear algebra. The reader should be familiar with limit and continuity type arguments and have a certain amount of mathematical sophistication. As possible introductory texts, we mention Differential and Integral Calculus by R Courant, Calculus by T Apostol, Calculus by M Spivak, and Pure Mathematics by G Hardy. The reader should also have some experience with partial derivatives. In overall plan the book divides roughly into a first half which develops the calculus (principally the differential calculus) in the setting of normed vector spaces, and a second half which deals with the calculus of differentiable manifolds.

Book Regaining the Edge in Urban Education

Download or read book Regaining the Edge in Urban Education written by Dennis P. Gallon and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to remain competitive in the world economy, the United States must develop and improve mathematics and science education. Given that the future workforce in this country will be comprised largely of women and minorities, groups traditionally not entering mathematics and science careers, special recruitment and retention efforts must be developed. Urban community colleges enroll the largest numbers of women and minorities and have a special role to play in these efforts. This collection of articles reviews the status of mathematics-science education, identifies barriers to greater enrollment among women and minorities, examines the growing demand for skilled workers, and prescribes steps to be taken by urban colleges to train a more technical workforce. Included are the following 10 articles: (1) "Implications of the Mathematics-Science Crisis on the U.S. Economy," by Dennis P. Gallon; (2) "Student Participation in Mathematics and Science Programs," by Stelle Feuers; (3) "Federal Government Support for Mathematics and Sciences," by Carl Polowczyk; (4) "Breaking Down Barriers for Women and Minorities in Mathematics and Sciences," by Dianne Halleck; (5) "The Urban Climate and Strategies for Intervention," by Tom Hooe; (6) "Mathematics and Science Crisis: Implications for Educational Leaders of Urban Community Colleges," by Wright L. Lassiter, Jr.; (7) "Mathematics-Science Professors in Community Colleges," by P. M. Commons; (8) "Mandate for Action," by Frank Cerrato; (9) "Needed: An Applied Academics Program," by Dale Parnell; and (10) "Selected Sources and Exemplary Practices in Mathematics and Sciences at Community Colleges," by James Holmberg. Book High School Mathematics Lessons to Explore Understand and Respond to Social Injustice

Download or read book High School Mathematics Lessons to Explore Understand and Respond to Social Injustice written by Robert Q. Berry III and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empower students to be the change—join the teaching mathematics for social justice movement! We live in an era in which students have —through various media and their lived experiences— a more visceral experience of social, economic, and environmental injustices. However, when people think of social justice, mathematics is rarely the first thing that comes to mind. Through model lessons developed by over 30 diverse contributors, this book brings seemingly abstract high school mathematics content to life by connecting it to the issues students see and want to change in the world. Along with expert guidance from the lead authors, the lessons in this book explain how to teach mathematics for self- and community-empowerment. It walks teachers step-by-step through the process of using mathematics—across all high school content domains—as a tool to explore, understand, and respond to issues of social injustice including: environmental injustice; wealth inequality; food insecurity; and gender, LGBTQ, and racial discrimination. This book features: Content cross-referenced by mathematical concept and social issues Downloadable instructional materials for student use User-friendly and logical interior design for daily use Guidance for designing and implementing social justice lessons driven by your own students’ unique passions and challenges Timelier than ever, teaching mathematics through the lens of social justice will connect content to students’ daily lives, fortify their mathematical understanding, and expose them to issues that will make them responsive citizens and leaders in the future.

Book Community Colleges in the Evolving STEM Education Landscape

Download or read book Community Colleges in the Evolving STEM Education Landscape written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-08-24 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Research Council (NRC) and National Academy of Engineering (NAE) have released a new report, Community Colleges in the Evolving STEM Education Landscape: Summary of a Summit. Based on a national summit that was supported by the National Science Foundation and organized by the NRC and the NAE, the report highlights the importance of community colleges, especially in emerging areas of STEM (Sciene, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and preparation of the STEM workforce. Community colleges are also essential in accommodating growing numbers of students and in retraining displaced workers in skills needed in the new economy. Community Colleges in the Evolving STEM Education Landscape: Summary of a Summit looks at the changing and evolving relationships between community colleges and four-year institutions, with a focus on partnerships and articulation processes that can facilitate student success in STEM; expanding participation of students from historically underrepresented populations in undergraduate STEM education; and how subjects, such as mathematics, can serve as gateways or barriers to college completion.
