Download or read book Missionary Travels written by David Livingstone and published by . This book was released on 2022-06-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the full personal account of Dr. Livingstone's historic travels across the continent of Africa based on his personal journals. While Livingstone is looked upon as an explorer in an age of explosive geographical and cultural discovery, the fact is often overlooked that Livingstone was first and foremost a Missionary of the Gospel, and his travels were missionary journeys. As Livingstone himself puts it in his introduction to this work, "The perfect freeness with which the pardon of all our guilt is offered in God's book drew forth feelings of affectionate love to Him who bought us with His blood, and a sense of deep obligation to Him for His mercy has influenced, in some small measure, my conduct ever since." This is the heart of the man whom God sent. "This book will speak, not so much of what has been done, as of what still remains to be performed, before the Gospel can be said to have been preached to all nations." After 150 years this statement is still true of all true Gospel outreach. This is the story of the labors to which the Love of Jesus compelled a great man. This is the story of first contact with African tribes, and first charting into the interior of the great Dark Continent. This is, first and foremost, the story of the Gospel reaching into Africa.
Download or read book Law Language and Science written by Diana Jeater and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-12-30 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the mentalities of various communities within a district of Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). Focusing in particular on white administrators and missionaries in the Melsetter District, it combines linguisitc/lexical analysis with historical interpretation, in an attempt to reconstruct what whites and Africans actually meant by the words and practices they used in interactions with each other. Jeater provides a detailed study of translation work in Mt Selinda, an evangelical mission; it also examines formal and informal court hearings, to contrast the perceptions and meanings ascribed to cases by white adjudicators and by African participants. This leads into an initial attempt to map out the birth of ethnography in Southern Rhodesia and to contrast it with anthropology in South Africa. By the 1920s, Africans' expertise in their own languages and culture had been usurped by self-referential white linguists and ethnographers. This account suggests that there is a tendency among archive-oriented historians to overestimate how far white missionaries and administrators really understood what Africans said and did. In addition to making a contribution to our empirical knowledge of Zimbabwe's history, the book focuses on how and why investigators first began to make claims to such knowledge. It urges those studying African history to be self-reflective about their practice, examining the historical roots of their claims to expertise. such claims
Download or read book Christian Theology of Religions written by Mariasusai Dhavamony and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2002 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with the theological problem of the relation of other religions to Christianity. Can Christianity claim to be unique and universal, given the fact that other religions propose themselves as means of salvation? The method is theological, i.e., relying on Christian revelation and faith experience to understand and, theology being a normative science, to judge the truth value of the results of the history of religions. More specifically, it deals with the salvific value of other religions, the presence of Christ in them, the necessity of the Church for salvation and the salvation of other believers, and finally, the theological understanding of interreligious dialogue.
Download or read book Aspects of Pentecostal Christianity in Zimbabwe written by Lovemore Togarasei and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-13 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book offers an engaging portrait into a vital, religious movement inside this southern Africa country. It tells the story of a community of faith that is often overlooked in the region. The authors include leading scholars of religion, theology, and politics from Botswana and Zimbabwe. The insights they present will help readers understand the place of Pentecostal Christianity in this land of many religions. The chapters detail a history of the movement from its inception to the present. Chapters focus on specific Pentecostal churches, general doctrine of the movement, and the movement’s contribution to the country. The writing is deeply informed and features deep historical, theological, and sociological analysis throughout. Readers will also learn about the socio-political and economic relevance of the faith in Zimbabwe as well as the theoretical and methodological implications raised by the Pentecostalisation of society. The volume will serve as a resource book both for teaching and for those doing research on various aspects of the Zimbabwean society past, present, and future. It will be a good resource for those in schools and university and college departments of religious studies, theology, history, politics, sociology, social anthropology, and related studies. Over and above academic and research readers, the book will also be very useful to government policy makers, non-governmental organizations, and civic societies who have the Church as an important stakeholder.
Download or read book The ZAPU and ZANU Guerrilla Warfare and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe written by Ngwabi Bhebe and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was a seminal contribution to the history of the Zimbabwean liberation war, which ended with independence in 1980. The book takes a considered view of both sides in the guerrilla war, but is particularly concerned with the Zapu side. At the time of writing this was more or less uncharted territory, to some extent the result of the political outcome of the war, which in the name of national unity, silenced the Zapu story. In particular, it uses material from interviews with ex-Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (Zipra) combatants, previously unobtainable. A particular angle of enquiry is the role of the evangelical Lutheran church in the war. The book is organised into sections: presenting an overview of the war and the roles of Zanu and Zapu 1964-1979; on ideologies and strategies of the liberation movements and the colonial state; on the place of the Lutheran church in Zimbabwe, the war in the west; the war in the east; church, mission and liberation; and the era of reconstruction.
