Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shorty McCabe on the Job Do things just happen, like peculiar changes in the weather, or is there a general scheme on file somewhere? Is it a free-for-all we're mixed up in - with our Harry Thaws and our Helen Kellers; our white slavers, our white hopes, and our white plague campaigns; our trunk murders, and our fire heroes? Or are we runnin' on schedule and headed somewhere? I ain't givin' you the answer. I'm just slippin' you the proposition, with the side remark that now and then, when the jumble seems worse than ever, you can get a glimpse of what might be a clew, or might not. Anyway, here I was, busy as a little bee, blockin' right hooks and body jabs that was bein' shot at me by a husky young uptown minister who's a headliner at his job, I understand, but who's developin' a good, useful punch on the side. Book Why Did He Do It Classic Reprint

Download or read book Why Did He Do It Classic Reprint written by Bernard Capes and published by . This book was released on 2017-07-22 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why Did He Do It?Professor's character was a jumble of contradictions. He could, for instance, be fond in some directions, inhuman in others. His erudition did not prevent his taking a mischievous delight in gossip of the most frivolous description. Mentally all there, he was subject, nevertheless, to fits of absent-mindedness, during which one might pull his leg without his knowing anything about it. A very bookworm by nature, he could become a malt-worm on provocation, and, throwing off the sage, like Dr. Johnson, for an evening's frolic with the boys, come home to excogitate logograms into the small hours of the morning. According to his mood, in short, he was a Fellow or a fellow; and, if the compositor has attended to his business, there is the distinction made without need, of further words. Finally, with a most unprepossessing appearance of his own, he had somehow endowed his only child, Miss Pauline Urchin, with the best of the graces which he lacked.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Ghost Ship Other Stories Classic Reprint written by Richard Middleton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ghost-Ship Other Stories The other day I said to a friend, "I have just reading in proof a volume of short stories by an author named Richard Middleton. He is dead. It is an extraordinary book, and all the work in it is full of a quite curious and distinctive quality. In my opinion it is very fine work indeed." It would be so simple if the business of the introducer or preface-writer were limited to such a straightforward, honest, and direct expression of opinion; unfortunately that is not so. For most of us, the happier ones of the world, it is enough to say "I like it," or "I don't like it," and there is an end: the critic has to answer the everlasting "Why?" And so, I suppose, it is my office, in this present instance, to say why I like the collection of tales that follows. I think that I have found a hint as to the right answer in two of these stories. One is called "The Story of a Book" the other "The Biography of a Superman." Each is rather an essay than a tale, though the form of each is narrative.
