Book The Joy of Missing Out

Download or read book The Joy of Missing Out written by Christina Crook and published by New Society Publishers. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After giving up the Internet for a month, a writer shares how we can all learn from her experience and rethink our relationship with the digital world. There’s no doubt that technology has overrun our lives. Over the past few decades, the world has embraced “progress” and we’re living with the resultant clicking, beeping, anxiety-inducing frenzy. But a creative backlash is gathering steam, helping us cope with the avalanche of data that threatens to overwhelm us daily through our computers, tablets, and smartphones. The Joy of Missing Out considers the technologically focused life, with its impacts on our children, relationships, communities, health, work, and more, and suggests opportunities for those of us longing to cultivate a richer on- and off-line existence. By examining the connected world through the lens of her own Internet fast, author Christina Crook creates a convincing case for increasing intentionality in our day-to-day lives. Using historical data, typewritten letters, chapter challenges, and personal accounts, she invites us to explore a new way of living, beyond our steady state of distracted “connectedness.” Most of us can’t throw away our smartphone or cut ourselves off from the Internet. But we can all rethink our relationship with the digital world, discovering new ways of introducing balance and discipline to the role of technology in our lives. This book is a must-read for anyone wishing to rediscover quietness of mind, and seeking a sense of peace amidst the cacophony of the modern world. Praise for The Joy of Missing Out “Crook’s book does a marvelous job of examining where we’ve gone awry and how we might begin to take ourselves and our lives back, while acknowledging the reality and importance of our wired world.” —Dr. Susan Biali, MD, Psychology Today “Offers thoughtful consideration of how online communications have evolved, as well as the value we place on being ever present in a digital world, often to the determinant of personal space and quiet time. Through practical examples and directions, Crook champions developing healthier habits for a more mindful online experience.” —Lori A. May, Portland Book Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred & Delicious is an award-winning vegetarian cookbook, a primer on Ayurveda (India’s ancient wellness system), and a gorgeous food memoir that celebrates the healing power of food. Author Lisa Mitchell writes inspiring and clear prose about the power of the Ayurvedic system to sustain good health and reverse chronic health problems, recounting her own recovery. The book includes 108 recipes and more than 60 full-page color photos. Most of the dishes include vegan options, and all but two are gluten-free. Only ten of the recipes reflect traditional Indian cooking. The rest demonstrate how to apply the balancing principles of Ayurveda and the creative (yet subtle) use of spices to modern Western cuisines that many Westerners prefer. Mitchell shares the Vedic perspective on why food is sacred and how cooks can bring a sacred intention to their kitchen labors to approach food preparation as spiritual practice. Traditional blessings for food from various cultures are sprinkled throughout the book. In April 2019, Sacred & Delicious won silver medals in two prestigious book industry awards competitions: the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards (in the Body, Mind, Spirit category) and the Nautilus Awards (in the Food, Cooking, and Healthy Eating category). It also won the cookbook category in the Body, Mind, Spirit Book Awards and is a finalist in the Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards (to be announced in June).

Book excerpt: Weaving together his own spiritual journey, stories from his experience coaching others, and down-to-earth principles and practices, management consultant and Christian life coach Jeff Spadafora helps readers find the joy in a life that is more vibrant and real than any they have experienced before. An increasing number of American Christians are frustrated. Even as they read their Bibles, listen to sermons, and hang out with other Christians, they become painfully aware that something is missing: joy. As a result, many have given up on their faith being a source of joy, and instead they seek meaning, purpose, and joy through their Christian service, work, relationships, hobbies, possessions, or even more destructive and hollow substitutes. The Joy Model offers a better way, showing readers that joy comes from balancing the practical and spiritual sides of our lives—the “Doing” and the “Being” of the Christian life. Jeff Spadafora reveals a plan to uncover significant increases in joy, including: tried and true disciplines to engage God practically a blueprint to move from knowing about God to actually experiencing him practical steps to let our new understanding of God transform relationships, attitudes, finances, service, and work

Book excerpt: Are you underweight? Are you easily fatigued? Do you experience discomfort in the joints? Do you suffer from dryness, insomnia, or constipation? Are you constantly restless or agitated? Is your skin dry, rough, or thin? If so, you need to balance your Vata Dosha... Ayurveda, which derives from ancient Vedic scriptures, is a 5,000-year-old medical ideology and philosophy based on the idea that we are all made up of different types of energy. There are three doshas in Ayurveda that describe the dominant state of mind/body--Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. While all three are present in everyone, Ayurveda suggests that we each have a dominant dosha that is unwavering from birth, and ideally an equal (though often fluctuating) balance between the other two. If doshas are balanced, we are healthy; when they are unbalanced, we develop a disorder commonly expressed by skin problems, impaired nutrition, insomnia, irritability, and anxiety. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are all important to our biology in some way, so no one is greater than, or superior to, any other. Each has a very specific set of basic functions to perform in the body. Each of the doshas has its own special strengths and weaknesses, and with a little awareness, you can do a lot to remain healthy and balanced. I've made a complete series of these three. This is Vata; the other two are also available. You can use this series to adjust your lifestyles and routines in a way that supports your constitution. Because Pitta and Kapha cannot pass without it, Vata is assumed to be the chief of the three Ayurvedic Standards in the body. It is therefore really important to keep Vata in a good balance. Vata reflects the energy of motion and is therefore always associated with the Wind (and the element of Air). Vata is the invisible force of movement--composed of Space and Air. It controls breathing, blinking, contraction of muscle and tissue, pulsation of the heart, and all movements of the cytoplasm and cell membranes. Vata fosters innovation, creativity, and versatility in a balanced way. But it also causes fear and anxiety when out of control. In Ayurvedic medicine, the Vata Dosha is the lightest and most innovative of all doshas. When Vata type are out of control, their creative minds and bodies, which are always on their way, will overwhelm themselves with fear and chaos. In this book, we'll dive deeper into what Vata means, what throws Vata out of balance, and how to identify the Vata Dosha in your environment, in yourself, and in others. With this book, I'm going to share with you everything you need to know in order to balance your Vata Dosha and use it for your overall vitality, joy, and well-being. Reading This You'll Discover: Vata Characteristics Vata Doshas and Subdoshas Disorders Caused by Vata Imbalance What Causes Vata Dosha or Imbalance Ways to Deal with Vata Dosha Vata-Stabilizing Lifestyle Tips Clarification on Vata Dosha and Fasting The Relation Between Vata Dosha and Warm Foods Guidance on Different Vata Diets What Tastes to Favor for Vata Balancing Foods that Pacify Vata and What Foods to Avoid How to Eat for Vata Balancing Vata Friendly, Delicious Recipes Vata Seasonal Guide Best Yoga Poses Essential Herbs Ideal Oil Massage for Vata Balancing Just follow the book along, and you'll reveal the easiest step-by-step routine to balance your Vata Dosha by the end of it! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The definitive cookbook on French cuisine for American readers: "What a cookbook should be: packed with sumptuous recipes, detailed instructions, and precise line drawings. Julia Child, Simone Beck, and Louisette Bertholle break down the classic foods of France into a logical sequence of themes and variations rather than presenting an endless and diffuse catalogue of dishes—from historic Gallic masterpieces to the seemingly artless perfection of a dish of spring-green peas. Throughout, the focus is on key recipes that form the backbone of French cookery and lend themselves to an infinite number of elaborations—bound to increase anyone’s culinary repertoire. “Julia has slowly but surely altered our way of thinking about food. She has taken the fear out of the term ‘haute cuisine.’ She has increased gastronomic awareness a thousandfold by stressing the importance of good foundation and technique, and she has elevated our consciousness to the refined pleasures of dining." —Thomas Keller, The French Laundry
