Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Seminar: Pre-Raphaelite Sensualities, language: English, abstract: William Morris was a poet, a political activist, a designer and a craftsman of the 19th century. As a part of the Arts and Crafts Movement, he is mainly known today for the last two categories due to his major influence on various artists. [...] In the following, Morris’ notion of art in connection with his political thinking shall be outlined. It will be analysed how he imagined art to be in the future. It is only possible to explain his socialist ideal of art in contrast to the contemporary role of art in society. Therefore, a description of the circumstances in Morris’ time will follow his definition of art. His own work as an artist will be assessed roughly in terms of his socialist ideal. In line with this, the limits of his work caused by the social circumstances at his time will be mentioned.

Download or read book William Morris written by Arthur Clutton-Brock and published by London : Williams and Norgate. This book was released on 1914 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Morris held that art was everybody's business, whether they are themselves artists or not. By art he didn't mean merely pictures or statues, but all the work of men's hands. He made beautiful things for himself and others, feeling that beauty is the result of men who are happy in their work and lives -- ugliness is tied to unhappiness. Morris believed that one of the chief ills of modern society was that most people had to work at jobs that were joyless -- and it was against that joylessness that he rebelled. His fight was against a barbarism caused by joyless labor, and the discontent that did not know it as a cause.

Book William Morris Position between Art and Politics

Download or read book William Morris Position between Art and Politics written by Grzegorz Zinkiewicz and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume re-evaluates the position of William Morris regarding contemporary perspectives on his artistic and political endeavours. Special emphasis is placed on the concepts and territories that lie in-between, both literally and metaphorically. This “in-between-ess” is the most remarkable quality of Morris, and secures him a unique position among his contemporaries, as well as inspiring new generations of scholars. Paradoxically, however, this aspect also contributes to a certain marginalization of Morris in studies devoted to “Eminent Victorians”. Instead of speaking of ruptures, gaps or lacunas, the point of view adopted here explores the undefined terrenes situated between art and politics, viewing them as vantage points and departure planes which cement Morris’s universe. At the same time, the book also argues that this universe has always existed in its specific shape and form, while the “poetic upholster”, as Morris was ironically labelled, only discovered and explored different points on the map of a space that could have no limits and boundaries. The book offers new insights and avenues to supplement existing scholarship on Morris, including spatiotemporal aspects of his work and the relationship between art and politics.

Book The Cambridge Companion to William Morris

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to William Morris written by Marcus Waithe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-23 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his short life, William Morris (1834-96) combined the roles of poet, author, painter, designer, translator, lecturer, political activist, journalist, weaver, bookmaker, and businessman. This volume draws together influential voices from different disciplines who have participated in the recent critical, political, and curatorial revival of his work, with essays exploring the contemporary resonance of his exceptional legacy. As a critic of capitalism, his thinking has thrived in these years of financial crisis; as a theorist of work and craftsmanship, his legacy interacts with a more recent ethics of making that questions the values of 'off-shored' production; and as a protector of landscape and buildings Morris's concern with what is precious strikes a chord in our age of environmental crisis. At the same time, a careful and scholarly approach observes the particularity of Morris's context, in a way that confounds the 'false friends' of hasty historical reception and reveals unexpected connections.
