Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journey From Chester to London The ground which is described in the following sheets, has been for some centuries passed over by the incurious Traveller; and has had the hard fortune of being constantly execrated for its dulness. To retort the charge, and clear it from the calumny, is my present business. To shew that the road itself, or its vicinity, is replete with either ancient historic facts, or with matter worthy of present attention, is an affair of no great difficulty. Possibly my readers may subscribe to the opinion, that the tract is not absolutely devoid of entertainment, and that the blame rests on themselves, not the country. Whatsoever entertainment they may meet with, let them join with me in thanks to the following contributors. Book Around Old Chester Classic Reprint

Download or read book Around Old Chester Classic Reprint written by Margaret Wade Campbell Deland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Around Old Chester Nothing interested Old Chester quite so much as a wedding. Possibly because it had so few of them, but probably because, as even the most respectable community is made up entirely of individuals, who, being human creatures, are at heart gamblers, the greatest gamble in life - marriage - arouses the keenest interest. Old Chester would have been very properly shocked if any outside person had offered to take odds on one of our rare weddings; but all the same we said to one another, "What possessed her to take him?" or, "What on earth can he see in her?" Book Chester in the Plantagenet and Tudor Reigns Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chester in the Plantagenet and Tudor Reigns Classic Reprint written by Rupert H. Morris and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chester in the Plantagenet and Tudor Reigns An attempt has been made in the following pages to put in a convenient from gleanings from the Collection of Historical Documents relating to the Plantagenet and Tudor Periods, which are preserved in the Muniment Room of the Corporation of the City of Chester. The entire collection, consisting of Charters, Municipal "Books, Letters and Corporation Accounts, and upwards of 1,400 sets of filed documents, may be roughly computed to have in its several divisions more than 200,000 separate writings." An interesting account is given by Mr. Jeaffreson of the mischances which successively befel these valuable documents: how they were drenched with rain owing to the premature unroofing of the building by workmen during some alterations: how, later, in 1861 they were exposed to fire as well as water - the fire which destroyed the old Town Hall, and the water used to put out the conflagration: how, after being removed to the old City Gaol, they ran quite as serious a risk of destruction from damp and neglect, being placed in a room which was neither dry nor properly ventilated, where they lay in moisture and disorder covered with dust and nursing seeds of slow decay, until the Town Council applied to the Deputy Keeper of Records in 1878 for advice and assistance. This application resulted in the excellent and systematic arrangement of these important Records by Mr. Jeaffreson. The documents which have been consulted for the present Work may be classified as follows: - 1. The Collection of Charters. 2. The Mayors Books and the Sheriffs' Books, which date, respectively, from the reign of Richard II. and Henry V. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice A Telegraph Editor’s Choice An Evening Standard “Best Books about London” Selection In popular imagination, London is a city of fog. The classic London fogs, the thick yellow “pea-soupers,” were born in the industrial age of the early nineteenth century. Christine L. Corton tells the story of these epic London fogs, their dangers and beauty, and their lasting effects on our culture and imagination. “Engrossing and magnificently researched...Corton’s book combines meticulous social history with a wealth of eccentric detail. Thus we learn that London’s ubiquitous plane trees were chosen for their shiny, fog-resistant foliage. And since Jack the Ripper actually went out to stalk his victims on fog-free nights, filmmakers had to fake the sort of dank, smoke-wreathed London scenes audiences craved. It’s discoveries like these that make reading London Fog such an unusual, enthralling and enlightening experience.” —Miranda Seymour, New York Times Book Review “Corton, clad in an overcoat, with a linklighter before her, takes us into the gloomier, long 19th century, where she revels in its Gothic grasp. Beautifully illustrated, London Fog delves fascinatingly into that swirling miasma.” —Philip Hoare, New Statesman

Book Chester B Himes A Biography

Download or read book Chester B Himes A Biography written by Lawrence P. Jackson and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Edgar Award for Best Critical/Biographical Work Finalist for the PEN America/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography The definitive biography of the groundbreaking African American author who had an extraordinary legacy on black writers globally. Chester B. Himes has been called “one of the towering figures of the black literary tradition” (Henry Louis Gates Jr.), “the best writer of mayhem yarns since Raymond Chandler” (San Francisco Chronicle), and “a quirky American genius” (Walter Mosely). He was the twentieth century’s most prolific black writer, captured the spirit of his times expertly, and left a distinctive mark on American literature. Yet today he stands largely forgotten. In this definitive biography of Chester B. Himes (1909–1984), Lawrence P. Jackson uses exclusive interviews and unrestricted access to Himes’s full archives to portray a controversial American writer whose novels unflinchingly confront sex, racism, and black identity. Himes brutally rendered racial politics in the best-selling novel If He Hollers Let Him Go, but he became famous for his Harlem detective series, including Cotton Comes to Harlem. A serious literary tastemaker in his day, Himes had friendships—sometimes uneasy—with such luminaries as Ralph Ellison, Carl Van Vechten, and Richard Wright. Jackson’s scholarship and astute commentary illuminates Himes’s improbable life—his middle-class origins, his eight years in prison, his painful odyssey as a black World War II–era artist, and his escape to Europe for success. More than ten years in the writing, Jackson’s biography restores the legacy of a fascinating maverick caught between his aspirations for commercial success and his disturbing, vivid portraits of the United States.
