Using the abundance of handwritten material produced, disseminated and consumed some centuries after the advent of print as its research material, the book's focus is on its day-to-day usage and on "minor knowledge," i.e., text matter originating and rooted primarily in the everyday life of the peasantry. The focus is on the history of education and communication in a global perspective. Rather than engaging in comparing different countries or regions, the authors seek to view and study early modern and modern manuscript culture as a transnational (or transregional) practice, giving agency to its ordinary participants and attention to hitherto overlooked source material. Through a microhistorical lens, the authors examine the strength of this aspect of popular culture and try to show it in a wider perspective, as well as asking questions about the importance of this development for the continuity of the literary tradition. The book is an attempt to explain “the nature of the literary culture” in general – how new ideas were transported from one person to another, from community to community, and between regions; essentially, the role of minor knowledge in the development of modern men.

Book excerpt: Comparative philology was one of the most prolific fields of knowledge in the humanities during the 19th century. Based on the discovery of the Indo-European language family, it seemed to admit the reconstruction of a common history of European languages, and even mythologies, literatures, and people. However, it also represented a way to establish geographies of belonging and difference in the context of 19th century nation-building and identity politics. In spite of a widely acknowledged consensus about the principles and methods of comparative philology, the results depended on local conditions and practices. If Scandinavians were considered to be Germanic or not, for example, was up to identity politics that differed in Berlin, Strasbourg, Copenhagen and Paris. The contributors here elaborate these dynamics through analyses of the changing and conflicting versions of imaginative geographies that the actors of comparative philology evoked by using Scandinavian literatures and cultures. They also show how these seemingly delocalized scientific models depended on ever-different local needs and practices. Through this, the book represents the first distinctly transnational dynamic geography and history of the philological knowledge of the North – not only as a history of a scientific discourse, but also as a result of doing and performing scientific work.

Ch. 1 gives an overview of accounts of Iceland up until the 18th century, and ch. 2 looks at sections of narratives from the turn of the 19th century, such as Joseph Bank's Letters from Iceland (1772), J.T. Stanley's Journals of the Stanley Expedition, George MacKenzie's Travels in Iceland (1812), William Hooker's Journal of a Tour in Iceland (1811) and Ebenezer Henderson's Iceland (1818). Ch. 3 looks at Lord Dufferin's Letters from High Latitudes (1876). while Jón Stefánsson's 'Introduction' to that text is the subject of ch. 4. Ch. 5 is on Letters from Iceland by W.H. Auden and Louis MacNeice (1936), and ch. 6 on Tim Moore's Frost on My Moustache (1999). An epilogue follows, pointing to the Human Genome Project and genetic databases of Iceland as the latest chapter in Iceland's colonial history. A close reading of British travel narratives of Iceland suggests that British imperial agents (travelers, scientists or scholars), were engaged in an imperial relationship with Iceland and the Icelanders. Banks and Stanley, were direct proponents of the idea that Iceland become a British colony. Lord Dufferin's narrative strategies imply a colonizing agenda at work. Iceland is frequently distanced from modern reality both temporally and spatially. It is spoken of in terms of its precolonial glory, while its colonial reality is ignored"--Leaves v-vi.
