Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Theological Studies, 1907, Vol. 8 It will not be thought remarkable by those who have read the history of the sixteenth century with attention, that, at a time when men's minds and hearts were all on fire about concrete issues that were very practical, the introduction of a Bible Canon, which had been upheld by at least one Doctor of the Church in early times and by several individual scholars at various times afterwards and did not superficially seem to sacrifice much of real importance, should have been treated as of academic interest and ignored. What is strange is that in later times, when the controversies of that same century have been reviewed with more judicial eyes, the fateful importance of the change should not have been appreciated. And that the question should have been so perfunctorily and inadequately treated by Church historians and writers on the Bible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Theology, 1907, Vol. 11 If we today have no right to plant in India, China, and Africa the seeds of intellectual and moral renewal, then our ancestors, who were pagans in the forests of North Germany, about the lagoons of Holland, and on the moors of Britain, were in egregious error when they set in operation the forces which translated and printed the Bible, founded the universities, promulgated the Magna Charta, brought on the Reformation, and induced the successive migrations from Europe whereby the New World was discovered, peopled, and refashioned into the great, free republic that it is. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Theological Studies, 1904, Vol. 5 A friend of the writer once entered into conversation with a tramp who was reclining at his case by the side Of the turnpike road. The traveller was fairly communicative, gave some of his experiences, and told where he had spent the past night. Our friend enquired, 'and where are you going now P' I don't know, ' replied the tramp, the wind has gone down and I never go anywhere unless I've the wind at my back.' It is not merely on the king's highway that we find people who like to have the wind at their backs and who have no inclination for battling against the storm and the stream. Under the title 'against the Stream a theological controversy has been running its course in Norway for a considerable period; and the time seems to have come when it is possible to give some indication of its nature, even if it is yet too early to sum up all the results. The name Mod S trb'mmen Against the Stream was the title of a book issued by Bishop Heuch of Christiansand early in 1902, calling attention to the rationalistic tendencies which be attributed to much of the popular theology and preaching of the Norwegian Church. The name was at once recognized as an appropriate one for the book, and for the attitude its author was taking up; and articles pro and con appeared under this title in issue after issue of every newspaper and magazine in the land. In order to understand the points at stake it is necessary to go back a little beyond the year of publication of the Bishop's book, and to make acquaintance with some of the leading figures in Norwegian theology and religious life. Download or read book The Journal of Theological Studies 1902 Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Theological Studies, 1902, Vol. 3 Dr. Kattenbusch's Apostles Creed belongs quite to the same category. It was hinted in the previous article that it has sufl'ered somewhat in point of form from the fact that it has been spread over so wide an extent of time. We learn from vol. I, p. 37, that Dr. Kattenbosch began his researches in 1882, and from the preceding page that in substance' (sat-wit) his present book had been finished in 1889, and that his work since that date had been all of the nature of revision. And the difficulty will be at once apparent of incorporating the work of others (as Dr. Kattenbusch has done in the most scrupulous and vigilant manner) as well as his own in a frame-work determined so long beforehand. It was impossible under these circumstances that the book should not suffer. But all we can say is that the critic who would make much of defects due to this cause would be intent upon dilettantism rather than upon science.
