Book The Supernatural and the Circuit Riders

Download or read book The Supernatural and the Circuit Riders written by Rimi Xhemajli and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Supernatural and the Circuit Riders, Rimi Xhemajli shows how a small but passionate movement grew and shook the religious world through astonishing signs and wonders. Beginning in the late eighteenth century, early American Methodist preachers, known as circuit riders, were appointed to evangelize the American frontier by presenting an experiential gospel: one that featured extraordinary phenomena that originated from God's Spirit. In employing this evangelistic strategy of the gospel message fueled by supernatural displays, Methodism rapidly expanded. Despite beginning with only ten official circuit riders in the early 1770s, by the early 1830s, circuit riders had multiplied and caused Methodism to become the largest American denomination of its day. In investigating the significance of the supernatural in the circuit rider ministry, Xhemajli provides a new historical perspective through his eye-opening demonstration of the correlation between the supernatural and the explosive membership growth of early American Methodism, which fueled the Second Great Awakening. In doing so, he also prompts the consideration of the relevance and reproduction of such acts in the American church today.

Book The Rule of Faith and Biblical Interpretation

Download or read book The Rule of Faith and Biblical Interpretation written by Robert C. Fennell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the dizzying array of approaches to reading the Bible, the oldest, most revered interpretive tool rises above the rest: the Rule of Faith. Faithful interpretation of Scripture in the postmodern context has much to learn from this ancient principle. Deeper engagement with the sacred text flourishes with the assistance of the Rule of Faith. That engagement in turn renews the Body of Christ. This book explores the interpretive practices of great reformers and renewers of the church, including Luther, Calvin, and Wesley, who kept up a lively dialogue with the ancient authors of the Christian movement. In that dialogue, they discovered a dynamic guide to better exegesis. Robert C. Fennell provides a compelling account of faithful interpreters from the past whose example inspires contemporary readers as they seek to understand the Bible.

Book Souls for Sale

Download or read book Souls for Sale written by John Frederick Whitehead and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1773, John Frederick Whitehead and Johann Carl B]ttner, two young German men, arrived in America on the same ship. Each man sold himself into servitude to a different master, and, years later, each wrote a memoir of his experiences, leaving invaluable historical records of their attitudes, perceptions, and goals. Despite their common voyage to America and similar working conditions as servants, their backgrounds and personalities differed. Their divergent interpretations of their experiences are the substance of rich and varied firsthand accounts of the transatlantic migration process, the servant labor experience of Germans in colonial America, and post-servitude life. Souls for Sale presents these parallel memoirs -- Whitehead's published here for the first time -- to illustrate the condition of German redemptioners as well as their religious, familial, and literary contexts during a crucial period of migration in Europe and America. The editors provide helpful introductions to the works as well as notes to guide the reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Crucible of Crisis. . . Weathering Storms is a book born out of the author’s personal experience and his witness of the crisis experiences of others. Some have faced unimaginable stressors in life that seem meaningless and cruel. Consequently, one’s psychology and theology may bend to the breaking point. Further to this, life’s storms seem to amplify God’s silence. Yet there is never a time when the Master of the wind and waves is more attentive. Weathering Storms probes these dynamics in depth. Your crisis experience will end. And when it does you will never be the same. But the person you become after arriving on the other side of the storm is reborn with new strength, insight, and wisdom. You will never want to go back to the person you once were, that is, if you walk the journey and weather the storm.
