Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Quekett Microscopical Club, Vol. 3 It has been stated by Van Tieghem, that gum-canals are present in the pith and bark, but are absent from the cotyledons Bulletin Societe Botanique de France, p. 11; quoted in Pharm. May 2md, 1875, p. This is not, however, altogether what I should have expected, as by analysis the cotyledons have been shown to contain nearly 5 per cent. Of gum, besides l per cent. Of resin. After repeated examinations Of sections of the dry Kola beans, I have observed what I believe must be masses, and in some cases canals of gum. That I refer to may often be found near the exterior of the dry bean, in irregular masses, and in radial streaks from 02 to o3 of an inch long, and from ou5 to 'ol of an inch wide. There are also to be seen separate nodules, away from the masses and streaks. These masses under a 21 inch objective have all the character Of gum or resin. The correctness of my supposition I have not yet verified by dissolving out and examining the tissues afresh. I have not observed the same feature in the fresh bean, and the masses referred to may consist partly of sugar, of which the analysis shows nearly 4 per cent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Quekett Microscopical Club, Vol. 1 The paper which I have now the honour to read before this audience is the outcome of a discovery, furnished by accident, which I was fortunate enough to make about two years ago, and to which I attach some importance, having strong reasons for believing it to be original. A series of observations and experiments, resulting from this discovery, have led to the accumulation of a number of facts which I consider to be of sufficient interest to justify the desire to make them more generally known. The discovery consists in the detection of fluid cavities in a fragment of material which is undoubtedly of meteoric origin; at least, it was obtained under conditions which admit of no other explanation, as I will immediately proceed to show. On the 19th of March, 1879, early in the morning, a shepherd, occupied with the erection of a pen in a field near Braunfels, a small town in the Rhine Province, Germany, was startled by a peculiar noise in the air above him, which he describes as a series of detonations, following each other in rapid succession; the whole being accompanied by a violent hissing. According to his narration, the whole phenomenon, which did not occupy more than about three seconds, bore a great resemblance to a clap of thunder, followed by a flash of lightning. There was, however, a clear, though not quite cloudless sky, and not the least indication of a thunderstorm observable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Quekett Microscopical Club, 1904-1906, Vol. 9 In general, a ray, passing from the point P to the point Q, and undergoing a total deviation equal to the sum of the angles a and 8, would suffer, in any practical optical system, many refractions, which, however, it is not necessary for our purpose to consider. All that we are concerned with is the total devia tion, and this may be looked upon as though produced by a single refraction only, at the point C, obtained by producing the incident ray and its conjugate ray until they meet as shown. To the point C the name chief point has been given by Professor S. P. Thompson. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Quekett Microscopical Club, 1913-1915, Vol. 12 Murray and Renard estimate the area Of sea bottom over which Globigerina ooze is at present in' process Of formation at over 4921 million square miles. Of its depth we can, Of course, form no idea, but as the great oceans are practically permanent, it must be very great, because we know from deep-sea deposits which have been elevated into land surfaces in Malta, Barbados, Trinidad and Australasia, that Similar deposits have been forming in the deep sea ever Since at least Miocene times. Prof; Agassiz has Observed N O lithological distinction of any value has been established between the chalk proper and the calcareous mud of the Atlantic, and it has been reasonably postulated by Prof. J ukes-brown after a careful analysis Of Calcareous oozes, that the chalk was deposited in a sea Of less than 500 fathoms, though doubtless at a considerable distance from land. The time occupied in the deposit Of the English chalk, arguing by the rate at which 'the Atlantic ooze is formed, which is one foot' in a century, must have been years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Quekett Microscopical Club, 1907-1909, Vol. 10 But let us now take, for example, the case of the genus Lycosa. We have in this country eighteen species, and a full and detailed description of any one of them might well occupy half the space allotted to this entire introduction. Supposing, now, that a beginner attempted to identify a specimen by the aid of a monograph of the genus Lycosa written on these lines. It is clear that all the family and generic characters would be repeated in the description of each species, and although the Specific characters would, truly enough, he faithfully included, they would constitute so small a percentage of the whole that the inexperienced worker would, in all likelihood, be utterly incapable of satisfactorily disentangling them from the pre ponderating verbose mass. Clearly, what is needed is a concise comparison of the various species with the descriptions limited to characters which are not common to the whole genus, and which are thus likely to be of assistance, even if not of primary systematic importance, in deciding upon the identity of a Specimen under consideration. I do not mean to suggest for a moment that the student should be contented with any conclusions which may be drawn from tables of differences or abbreviated descriptions. To adopt such a course would be to court disaster, and one must never lose sight of the real nature of tables, etc., designed merely to facilitate the separation of genera or the determination of species. They are, to use a figure of Speech, the finders on the main telescopes; we cannot, by their aid alone, learn everything which is to be learnt, but yet without them we feel, at any rate in our early studies, supremely helpless. Analytical tables are now much in vogue, but, whilst admitting their undoubted value, I personally prefer the use of abbreviated descriptions as being far less mechanical and far more likely to impress on one's memory the salient features of the various species. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Quekett Microscopical Club, Vol. 11: 1910-1912 To turn now to the methods by which Protozoan parasites penetrate into new hosts. We find four known methods, which can be summarised very briefly after what has been stated already. The commonest is the method of casual or contamina tive infection, where the host infects itself by taking up the propagative phases of the parasite accidentally from its surround ings. Most usually infection takes place by way of the mouth, with the food; but it may be effected by the respiratory organs. Other modes of infection are the contagious, as in dourine already mentioned; the inoculative, as in malaria and other diseases caused by blood-parasites and the so-called hereditary method, as in Nosema bombycis and other cases. Download or read book The Journal of the Quekett Microscopical Club Vol 4 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Quekett Microscopical Club, Vol. 4: 1874-1877 As my communication this evening must be regarded more in the light of an introduction to an interesting object than in that of an elaborated paper, I shall not enter to any great extent into the structure and functions of the various glands met with in the animal frame, but it is necessary to the proper understanding of the salivary glands of the cockroach which I exhibit to-night that I should, for the advantage of those present who may have no technical knowledge of the subject, explain briefly the functions destined to be performed by a gland, and the types upon which the various glands are constructed. The office of a gland is the elimination of certain materials from the blood, which are either stored up for future use in the animal economy, or are cast out as effete and deleterious to the system; we may instance the gastric, juice and the saliva, as illustrating the first, and the urine and sweat as examples of the second. That this process may be fully and perfectly carried out, the blood must be brought into close proximity with the agents by which this eliminating process is effected, and an examination of the gland will show the elements whereby this change is produced. We may realise from Dr. Sharpey's description better than from any words of mine, the structural elements concerned in secretion, and therefore with your permission I will quote them.
