Book The Journal of Speculative Philosophy 1887 Vol 21 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Journal of Speculative Philosophy 1887 Vol 21 Classic Reprint written by William Torrey Harris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Speculative Philosophy, 1887, Vol. 21 It will be well to put the question itself as briefly and precisely as possible. Transcendental idealism teaches: all our phenomena or objects of experience are mere ideas, and nothing independent of the latter. That subjective phenomena are such, is beyond question. We are concerned, therefore, only with the objective phenomena; these are the things external to us, the phenomena in space, hence bodies or matter. Kant must necessarily have taught, and has taught in the most unambiguous manner in the Paralogisms of Pure Reason, as they appear in the first edition of the Critique, that matter is a mere idea. In the second edi tion of the Critique he added a Refutation of Idealism, in which he declared that matter was not a mere idea. This is the. Point we are here concerned with. Ive have before us a contra diction, which no ingenious interpretation can explain away from either the spirit or letter of the original passages. Book Reason Reality and Speculative Philosophy

Download or read book Reason Reality and Speculative Philosophy written by Arthur Edward Murphy and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though one of the best known and most highly regarded philosophers of his day, Arthur E. Murphy left few books behind, least of all the "big book" he alluded to throughout his life but, for reasons unknown, never published. Reason, Reality, and Speculative Philosophy is derived from that book manuscript, so famous and yet so unknown, and offers at last a clear and definitive statement of Murphy's view of the place and purpose of philosophy. Most of all, this book introduces readers to a genuine lover of wisdom, a philosopher who used ordinary English to address traditional problems of philosophy. Murphy gives a critical account of speculative philosophy and, at the same time, offers a constructive attempt to outline a philosophy true to both reason and reality. In the process, he examines the speculative philosophies of F. H. Bradley, C. S. Peirce, Bertrand Russell, George Santayana, and A. N. Whitehead, among others, and dissects various forms of realism and idealism. His work thus provides a trenchant critique of the major philosophical tendencies of the period from 1890 to 1940. This long-lost work, recovered and edited with expert care by Marcus G. Singer, is a contribution to philosophic reason that is penetrating, comprehensive, witty, and wise.

Book The Ontological Roots of Phenomenology

Download or read book The Ontological Roots of Phenomenology written by Anna Varga-Jani and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-02-09 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Ontological Roots of Phenomenology: Rethinking the History of Phenomenology and Its Religious Turn, Anna Jani examines the common methodological background of phenomenology. Through attention to the phenomenon of being, the existential experience of religiosity can be phenomenologically described by the ontological difference between being and beings. Jani demonstrates that the methodological inquiries connect closely with the ontological source of phenomenology. First, she elaborates on the contributions of Hedwig Conrad-Martius, Roman Ingarden, and Edith Stein from the point of view of Heidegger’s influence on the early phenomenologists from Husserl’s students. Second, she analyzes Heidegger’s reinterpretation of his own earlier thinking after the “turn,” which is formulated in the idea of the “new beginning of philosophical thinking” in the Contributions to Philosophy. In the context of clarifying the difference between being and beings, her third hypothesis about Ricœur’s critique of Heidegger reveals an ethical level. The primordiality of the ethical dimension of the action reveals the ontological foundation of the hermeneutical-phenomenological situation.

Book John Lachs s Practical Philosophy

Download or read book John Lachs s Practical Philosophy written by Krzysztof Piotr Skowroński and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Lachs (1934-) has been one of the most interesting American philosophers for nearly sixty years. His philosophical, educational, and public activity has been an attempt to show the relevance of philosophy to life. This is the first book dedicated to his thought. International scholars have proposed different themes in Lachs’ philosophy, so as to present its enormous potential. Lachs’ responses to his critics shows that dialogue with his critics is an inspirational activity for both sides. Lachs’ way of philosophizing can be seen as exemplary for those who want to unify and present a clear and understandable articulation of moral and philosophical messages to everyone.
