Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Speculative Philosophy, 1887, Vol. 21 It will be well to put the question itself as briefly and precisely as possible. Transcendental idealism teaches: all our phenomena or objects of experience are mere ideas, and nothing independent of the latter. That subjective phenomena are such, is beyond question. We are concerned, therefore, only with the objective phenomena; these are the things external to us, the phenomena in space, hence bodies or matter. Kant must necessarily have taught, and has taught in the most unambiguous manner in the Paralogisms of Pure Reason, as they appear in the first edition of the Critique, that matter is a mere idea. In the second edi tion of the Critique he added a Refutation of Idealism, in which he declared that matter was not a mere idea. This is the. Point we are here concerned with. Ive have before us a contra diction, which no ingenious interpretation can explain away from either the spirit or letter of the original passages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Speculative Philosophy, Vol. 5: July, 1871 For the intellect in the service of the will - that is, in its practical nse - there exist only individual things; for the intellect which devotes itself to arts and sciences - that is, which is active for itself - there are only generalities, whole kinds, species, orders, ideas of things, since even the plastic artist intends to represent in the individual only the idea that is, the genus. This rests upon the fact, that the will im mediately is only directed upon individual things: they are its proper obj ects; for only those have an empirical reality. Ideas, species, orders, on the contrary, can only very indi rectly become its obj ects. Therefore the inexperienced man has no comprehension of general truths; but the genius over looks and neglects the individual; the enforced occupation with single things as such, as it forms the subject-matter of practical life, is to him nothing but a burdensome socage. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Speculative Philosophy, 1877, Vol. 11 It remains to demonstrate the law of final causes, that is to say. To show that this law results, as that of efficient causes, from the relation of phenomena to the thought; but this genus of de monstration, which has appeared to us the only valuable one, seems to us interdicted by the very use we have made of it just now. We have in fact established that the possibility of thought rested upon the unity of the object, and that this unity consisted in the mechanical connection of causes and effects. Have we not declared by that even that all other connection, and, among others that of means with ends, was foreign to the essence of thought and indifferent to its existence? We have added that the objective existence of phenomena themselves was founded upon their necessary connection. Can we search in this same existence a new basis, and will the phenomena be more true and more objective because of this unity of the series, which makes each movement born of a precedent, when there is added to 'it the unity of system which makes many movements converge towards one common end? Is it not, on the contrary, evident 'that this second unity is entirely supererogatory, and that the thought, instead of introducing it itself into things, is reduced to wait upon it as upon a happy accident and a sort of favorite of mature? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Speculative Philosophy, 1879, Vol. 13 But besides the capital mistake of Schopenhauer, another emerges here which (already referred to) is scarcely less glaring. It is that the synthesis leaves undetermined which of two perceived states is the prior, even in my imagina tion. Impressions in my imagination, so long as they are subjective, shall be at command of my own will - to be set here or set there, like pebbles on the beach, just as I please! But there is no such absurd doctrine as that in Kant, who knows, as everybody knows, that our imagination, be its power of action what it may, is passive to the order of its impressions, and cannot but be passive. Kant is, really, as. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. One path is: That Being doth be, and non-being is not This is the way Of Conviction, for Truth follows hard in her footsteps. Th' other path is: That Being is not, and non-being must be; This one, I tell thee in truth, is an all-incredible pathway. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Speculative Philosophy, 1881, Vol. 15 It is not answered by merely carrying over and applying one branch of natural science to another. Each is absolute in itself, no one is deducible from another, and all can be truly one only when in each for itself the particular is comprehended in the general and from an absolute conformity to law. Firstly, in order that medicine must become a universal science of organic nature, of which the separate parts are all branches, and that it may gain this breadth and internal unity, as well as give it the rank of a science, the first principles upon which it rests must be not empirical or hypothetical, but in themselves certain and philosophic. It is true that for some time this has been felt and recognized, more generally than has been the case in regard to other departments of thescience of nature. Here also philosophy should have no other business than to bring an external, formal unity into the existing multiplicity, and to restore a reputation to the science of physicians, which has been made ambiguous by poets and philosophers for many a year. If Brown's theory were distinguished by nothing more than by the purity from empirical explanations and hypotheses, the recognition and development of the great principle of the merely quantitative difference in all phenomena, and the consistency with which they follow from one first principle without the addition of any other, and without deviating from the scientific method, its originator would still be eminent in the history of medicine and the creator of a new world in this realm of knowledge. It is true that he stops with the idea of excitability, and still has no scientific knowl edge oi it, but at the same time he refuses all empirical explana tion of it, and warns against the uncertain investigation of causes, which is the ruin of philosophy. Doubtless he did not deny that there was a higher sphere of knowing in which that idea could itself be derived and construed from a higher, as he derived that of forms of disease from it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Speculative Philosophy, 1884, Vol. 18 Augustus De Morgan was born, in 1806, in India, where his father was in the East India Company's service. When sixteen years old he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, to pursue mathematics, gaining, in 1825, a Trinity scholarship, and coming out fourth wrangler in 1827. He was prevented from taking his M. A. Degree, or from obtaining a Fellowship, by his conscientious objection to signing the theological tests then required at Cambridge. J evons says: A strong repugnance to any sectarian restraints upon the freedom of opinion was one of De Morgan's most marked characteristics throughout life. At the age of twenty-two he became professor of mathematics in University College, London. As a teacher, De Morgan was particularly gifted. A voluminous writer on mathematics, be contributed essentially to those expansions of the fundamental conceptions which have rendered possible the new algebras, such as Quaternions and the Ausdehnungslehre, and have generalized the whole idea of a mathematical algorithm or calculus.
