The length of artery compressed (3 - 6 cm.) had but very little effect upon the results. These experiments indicate that the maximum pressure, as deter mined with the sphygmomanometer, is the maximum lateral pressure of the artery of which the one explored is a branch. As the mini mum pressure is practically the same in all of the larger arteries (dawson), the sphygmomanometer, when applied to the brachial artery of man, determines approximately the lateral pressures maximum and minimum - in the aorta. The ex periment which now goes by his name consists in spreading out the tongue of a curarised frog on a plate of glass, which at the same time supports the animal lying on its belly the glass plate is then fastened to the stage of the microscope and the outspread tongue brought into view. The tongue is then pinched, or irritated in some way, and the efl'ect on the vessels is directly observed. Dr Cohnheim has in this way studied the inflammatory process in the web of the frog's foot, and in the We mesentery. The cornea and the membrane nictitans of the frog and the ear of the rabbit were also observed by him with reflected light. The subject of the metabolism experiments was a healthy young man of 65 kilos weight, not accustomed to the use of alcohol in any form. A fixed diet was eaten. Alcohol in four forms was used: absolute alcohol suitably diluted, whiskey, beer, and port wine. In most cases the quantity of the alcoholic fluid used in twenty-four hours contained between 75 and 80 c.c. of absolute alcohol. The most decided effect was obtained by the use of beer and port wine. There was but little difference between the effect of pure alcohol and whiskey. The interpreta tion of the data accumulated by many investigators depends upon the decision of the question whether the dead space is a fixed or a variable quantity. If the latter is the case, what are the nature, cause, and mode of control of such variations? Although earlier investigators recognized the dead space as a factor in to have been the first to report a measure ment of it. By means of a plaster cast of the cavity of the mouth, pharynx, trachea, bronchi and bronchioles of a cadaver he found a vol ume of 144 cc. He noted, however, that in the living subject even in an expiration much smaller than the volume of the dead space there are always to be found-considerable amounts of co2, and that as expira tion progresses the percentage of C02 in successive portions increases gradually, not abruptly: facts which later investigators have not always kept in mind.
