Most of the cells reached a maximum reading in about an hour, while some of the cells, especially the sulphate cells, might require two or three hours. In a few cases the maximum was reached in fifteen or twenty minutes. However, the time for any particular cell was not in the least constant. The object of the following paper is to record the results of some experiments having a bearing upon some of the possible transformations of the amino - acids in question. In considering the nature of the reactions which tyrosine and phenylalanine are likely to sustain in the animal body, much weight is naturally placed upon the phenomena presented by the condition of alcaptonuria in which, as is well known, the human organism loses its customary capacity of completely oxidizing phenylalanine and tyrosine, but instead converts them into homogentisic acid. They communicate at the bottom by means of a glass tube, 3 mm. Inside diameter. C' is a two-way stop-cock. The holes in the key are drilled at right angles, so that the tube which connects with the measuring apparatus may be put in communication either with the funnel or with the absorption bulb. The funnel is of service in removing air from the tube which connects the measuring apparatus with the absorption pipette. By pouring mercury or water into the funnel and turning the stop-cocks c' and c in the proper directions all the air is readily removed. F is a rubber pump used in transferring gas from B to A.
