Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Physical Chemistry, 1896-1897, Vol. 1 In all cases the maximum reading of the electromotive force of the cell was taken, for all the cells measured were found to increase rather quickly to a maximum, which remained constant for a time. Most of the cells reached a maximum reading in about an hour, while some of the cells, especially the sulphate cells, might require two or three hours. In a few cases the maximum was reached in fifteen or twenty minutes. However, the time for any particular cell was not in the least constant. Throughout this whole paper twentieth normal solutions are always used when no concentration is specified. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Physical Chemistry, 1909, Vol. 13 There is, I think, little doubt that some such action does take place; during the exposure there is a constant transference of atoms, till after a certain stage there is an ex cess of silver in the most exposed parts, and the mercury is deposited more readily upon the less exposed parts, or more or less equally all over the plate. Draper also found the Daguerreotype plates were acted on by the red and blue rays of the spectrum, in oppo site ways, similarly to the action noticed by Ritter with sil ver chloride. This book was released on 2018-09-23 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Physical Chemistry, 1898, Vol. 2 The present paper is a commentary on and a complement to the celebrated memoir of J. Willard Gibbs 'on the Equilib tium of Heterogeneous Substances. All chemists now know, how, in this memoir, the illustrious New Haven professor has deduced from the principles of thermodynamics the equations which represent the states of equilibrium of all chemical sys tems; all know, under the name of the phase rule, ' the weighty theorems which he has found through comparing the number of unknown quantities to be determined, with the num ber of independent equations subsisting among them. The labors of H. W. Bakhuis Roozeboom and of his pupils have illustrated the bearing of the phase rule, in applying it to the discussion of a host of complex chemical reactions; and the special treatises of W. Meyerhof'fer3 and of Wilder D. Bancroft4 have assembled under it the chief problems of chemical me chanics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Chemical Society, 1901, Vol. 80: Abstracts of Papers on Organic Chemistry; Part I The boiling point of the centre-symmetrical bromo-tp-butylene is cer tainly not lower than 93 but the presence of hydrogen bromide induces transformation into the plano-symmetrical modification; this change takes place at the ordinary temperature, and is accelerated by sunlight, and the boiling point therefore becomes depressed. The plano-symmetrical modification has an agreeable odour when freshly prepared, boils at 835 - 8450, and has 3. Sp. Gr. 13152 at when exposed to light, it acquires a disagreeable odour, and, hydrogen bromide being eliminated, undergoes transformation into the centro symmetrical modification, but not to so great an extent as in the con verse case.
