Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Industrial Hygiene, 1922, Vol. 3 The gatherer stands on the foot bench at the working hole with a punty in hand. This is an instrument 43 inches long, con sisting of an iron rod with a wooden handle at one end and a clay-ball on which the glass is collected, at the other end. The gatherer has his back toward the machine and holds the punty handle with {both hands, allowing the clay ball to touch the surface of the fused glass. The iron rod of the punty rests on an iron support (dog leg) at the edge of the working hole, while the gatherer revolves the punty until sufficient glass adheres to form a gob of the size required to make the proper weight bottle. The gatherer then turns to the left and, suspending the gob over the mouth of the blank, allows the glass to drip off. When the proper amount has fallen, the cutter clips the stream of glass with a pair of shears. The gatherer then turns back to the hole and again inserts the punty. The motions of the gatherer are exceed ingly rapid and accurate and as many as twenty-six 2-ounce gobs may be gathered in one minute. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Industrial Hygiene, Vol. 1: May, 1919-April, 1920 Each month of the war witnessed an improvement in many of these concerns. If the same forces which were so inde fatigable in their efforts for conserving the health and efficiency of the industrial army during the war will only carry over these efforts into the reconstruction period, an entirely new standard of existence will result for the working people of the land, the great army who must produce and provide. Thus, in the course of one short decade, broad humanizing principles Combined with scientific medical and surgical work have permanently established in the medi cal profession this far-reaching health service - Industrial Medicine and Surgery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Industrial Hygiene, Vol. 2: May, 1920-April 1921 The three fields of public, social, and in dividual practice in psychiatry are thus well logically in mind in Massachusetts, as indeed they are becoming clear to most other Atlantic seaboard states and to all urbanized communities that have faithfully undertaken the work of mental hygiene on approved lines. Yet some of us, I fear, may still regard this intermediary field of social psychiatry more as a theory than a con dition. Luckily, the men who think prae tice more important than theory are fast dying out or undergoing belated conver sion through re ection on the successes of theory in the Great War. If, however, you actually do meet one of these incorrigible practical men who will see nothing in theory, it is as a rule enough to Show him the results of social psychiatric practice among. The relatives of, the victims of neurosyphilis general paresis and the like - to convince him that mental hy giene has unlocked a brilliant and effica cions novelty for public health in its work upon the so-called syphilis of the inno cent. I make this point about social psychiatric practice somewhat at length, not so much for my present hearers as for others who may read the printed remarks and wonder whether after all there exists a personnel to attack such widely ramifying problems as those of industrial psychiatry. There does exist the appropriate personnel for work in industrial psychiatry. There is, to be sure, not enough such personnel; but there do exist competent workers who can be multiplied as soon as industrialists begin to crave this personnel and as soon as psychiatrists see the peculiar values of the new work. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Hygiene, 1922, Vol. 2 In our routine procedure the soil was thoroughly broken up be fore being emptied into the sieves. Precautions should be taken not to carry over a little of the soil from one sample to another, and to keep the bottom of the sieve from contact with any dirt. The water used in the funnels was usually heated to a temperature of about 115° F. A funnel, after being set up, was filled within an inch and a half of the rim, so that when the sieve was placed in position there would be no contact between the water and the bottom of the sieve. Water of the same temperature was then poured over the rim of the funnel, until it was practically full and the level of the water almost an inch above the bottom of the sieve. The samples were usually set up in the isolating apparatus some time during the day and left stand ing over night before the examinations were made. One method of drawing off the samples of water for microscopical examination was to attach a second clamp higher on the tube and to allow the water between the two clamps to run Off into a 50 cc. Centrifuge tube (see Fig. A simpler method is to slightly Open the clamp at the bottom of the rubber tube and let the water run out until the centri fuge tube is filled. After centrifugation the supernatant water was drawn Off with a long pipette and the residue spread out on a two-by three-inch slide, for microscopical examination: In some instances, when the soil sample was of saturated clay or very finely divided sand, a considerable amount of sediment would fall into the funnel. This could, if necessary, be reduced in amount by running it through a smaller isolating appartus before microscopical examination.
