Book The Journal of Delinquency 1920 Vol 5 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Journal of Delinquency 1920 Vol 5 Classic Reprint written by Whittier State School and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Delinquency, 1920, Vol. 5 Associate Psycho Clinician at the State Bureau of Juvenile Research Columbus, Ohio. The term moron as a name for the highest grade of feeble-mind edness is so well known that it was recently stated on the editorial page of a local newspaper that the well informed person must use the word occasionally to show that he is keeping up with the times. For years men who have been dealing with social problems have real ized that it is the moron who makes necessary a large part of their work. Just what a moron is and what should be done with him has not been until recently a difficult question to answer. Any student of social psychology will tell you very glibly that a moron is a high grade feeble-minded person with a mental age of eight to eleven years and that he should be segregated for life in an institution. This sounds simple indeed and if it were entirely true the problem would not be as complicated as it really is. The psychologists in the army, however, have upset us completely in our thinking and we no longer feel at all confident of the sound ness of our theories as to what a moron is nor as to how organized society is to treat him. Let us see just What these army psycholog ista have discovered to upset our pre-conceived notions regarding the moron so that we in great confusion ask. When is a moron not a moron? Or When is a moron not feeble-minded In the first place they have determined for the first time in the history of mental testing intelligence levels of thousands of adults representing prob ably a fair sample of the general population of the country. The results of their tests give startling facts regarding the distribution of general intelligence. The curve of distribution in Fig. 1 shows roughly the distribution of the ratings of men in the United States Army by letter grade from A to E with C taken as the average. This is interesting as showing that the distribution of general intelli gence follows the normal curve of distribution with a slight skewing at the lower end of the curve. This skewing is probably due to the fact that a great many individuals have a lower grade of general intelligence than they would have possessed from purely hereditary causes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delinquent Daughters explores the gender, class, and racial tensions that fueled campaigns to control female sexuality in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century America. Mary Odem looks at these moral reform movements from a national perspective, but she also undertakes a detailed analysis of court records to explore the local enforcement of regulatory legislation in Alameda and Los Angeles Counties in California. From these legal proceedings emerge overlapping and often contradictory views of middle-class female reformers, court and law enforcement officials, working-class teenage girls, and working-class parents. Odem traces two distinct stages of moral reform. The first began in 1885 with the movement to raise the age of consent in statutory rape laws as a means of protecting young women from predatory men. By the turn of the century, however, reformers had come to view sexually active women not as victims but as delinquents, and they called for special police, juvenile courts, and reformatories to control wayward girls. Rejecting a simple hierarchical model of class control, Odem reveals a complex network of struggles and negotiations among reformers, officials, teenage girls and their families. She also addresses the paradoxical consequences of reform by demonstrating that the protective measures advocated by middle-class women often resulted in coercive and discriminatory policies toward working-class girls.

Book When Abortion Was a Crime

    Book Details:
  • Author : Leslie J. Reagan
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2022-02-22
  • ISBN : 0520387422
  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book When Abortion Was a Crime written by Leslie J. Reagan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of abortion in the United States, with a new preface that equips readers for what’s to come. When Abortion Was a Crime is the must-read book on abortion history. Originally published ahead of the thirtieth anniversary of Roe v. Wade, this award-winning study was the first to examine the entire period during which abortion was illegal in the United States, beginning in the mid-nineteenth century and ending with that monumental case in 1973. When Abortion Was a Crime is filled with intimate stories and nuanced analysis, demonstrating how abortion was criminalized and policed—and how millions of women sought abortions regardless of the law. With this edition, Leslie J. Reagan provides a new preface that addresses the dangerous and ongoing threats to abortion access across the country, and the precarity of our current moment. While abortions have typically been portrayed as grim "back alley" operations, this deeply researched history confirms that many abortion providers—including physicians—practiced openly and safely, despite prohibitions by the state and the American Medical Association. Women could find cooperative and reliable practitioners; but prosecution, public humiliation, loss of privacy, and inferior medical care were a constant threat. Reagan's analysis of previously untapped sources, including inquest records and trial transcripts, shows the fragility of patient rights and raises provocative questions about the relationship between medicine and law. With the right to abortion increasingly under attack, this book remains the definitive history of abortion in the United States, offering vital lessons for every American concerned with health care, civil liberties, and personal and sexual freedom.

Book The Pentathlon of the Ancient World

Download or read book The Pentathlon of the Ancient World written by Frank Zarnowski and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-04-19 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pentathlon, comprising competition in the discus, javelin, long jump, sprint, and wrestling, was hailed as the ultimate test of athletic versatility and remained a staple of the ancient Greek Olympic Games, Crown Games and Pan-Hellenic festivals for 1,200 years. Still, there is little scholarly consensus over many major aspects of the event. This detailed exploration of the ancient pentathlon discusses the nature of the spectacle, the method of determining a victor, the five sub-events and the order in which they occurred. It also chronicles the history of the event and its champions, the recognition of ancient pentathletes, and the pentathlon's 18-year modern Olympic history and its influence on its contemporary counterpart, the decathlon. A record book and glossary complete this fresh look at one of the ancient world's most renowned sporting competitions.

Book Classic American Crime Fiction of the 1920s

Download or read book Classic American Crime Fiction of the 1920s written by Leslie S Klinger and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 1666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic American Crime Writing of the 1920s—including House Without a Key, The Benson Murder Case, The Tower Treasure, The Roman Hat Mystery, The Tower Treasure, and Little Caesar—offers some of the very best of that decade’s writing. Earl Derr Biggers wrote about Charlie Chan, a Chinese-American detective, at a time when racism was rampant. S. S. Van Dine invented Philo Vance, an effete, rich amateur psychologist who flourished while America danced and the stock market rose. Edwin Stratemeyer, a man of mystery himself, singlehandedly created the juvenile mystery, with the beloved Hardy Boys series. The quintessential American detective Ellery Queen leapt onto the stage, to remain popular for fifty years. W. R. Burnett, created the indelible character of Rico, the first gangster antihero. Each of the five novels included is presented in its original published form, with extensive historical and cultural annotations and illustrations added by Edgar-winning editor Leslie S. Klinger, allowing the reader to experience the story to its fullest. Klinger's detailed foreword gives an overview of the history of American crime writing from its beginnings in the early years of America to the twentieth century.
