This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Cutaneous Diseases Including Syphilis, 1918, Vol. 36 Recently Bruck has described a simple chemical reaction in syphilis which he believes may be due to the same changes in the serum as are responsible for the phenomenon of complement fixation, and may prove of value in conjunction with the Wassermann reaction as a specific aid in the diagnosis of syphilis. The technic of the test is extremely simple and based on the experimental observation that the precipitate formed from the serum of a syphilitic on the addition of nitric acid, does not dissolve in distilled water as readily or as completely as the precipitate formed with normal or nonsyphilitic serums. With about 200 syphilitic serums, Bruck found that his test yielded the same results as observed with the Wassermann reaction. Only three Wassermann positive serums, from one latent and two secondary cases, gave negative nitric acid reactions. On the other hand, one case of congenital syphilis and one teritiary case gave positive nitric acid reactions, although the Wassermann test was negative. Of about 200 nonsyphilitic patients, all were negative except four cases of old infected wounds of knee and thigh, and one case of tuberculosis. As all of the latter patients were febrile, a positive reaction with the serum of a febrile patient is regarded as unreliable. Book The Journal of Cutaneous Diseases Including Syphilis 1887 Vol 5 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Cutaneous Diseases Including Syphilis, 1887, Vol. 5 The urethral fever attending disturbance of the deep urethra is more often severe, and in a certain proportion of cases lethal. Now, although these facts arc well known and the obvious deduction undisputed, that in cutting anterior stricture there is no excuse, so far as this operation is concerned, for passing any instrument beyond the sinus of the bulb, yet practically I believe that in nearly all, if not all, instances the first sound that enters the urethra after a stricture in its pendulous portion has been cut is made to enter the bladder on one plea or another, either to see whether there is any deeper stricture or ta attempt to test the question of spasm. As a matter of habit, also, it is quite natural to let the first sound enter the bladder. I a in not, in this article, condemning the practice wholly. I have? been accustomed to do it - to sec whether or not the urethra was freely open throughout. My subsequent instrumentation to keep the stricture open is always confined to the limits of the urethra incised, or just beyond; but I raise the question whether in future it will not be better to leave the deep urethra untouched in all cases of anterior urethrotomy until the wound has healed - say until the third week - then to explore the deep urethra, as in an uncut case. I make this suggestion just now, not so much for fear of serious urethral fever, but to test the question of urethral spasm, as will appear further on in my remarks. But that it also has a bearing in relation to the first point was only too clearly demonstrated to me during the past year by an experience which one of my house surgeons in Bellevue had with a common case of anterior urethrotomy done with Dr. Otis' instrument. The patient was a man of 41, with normal urine, save a little pus; no kidney disease. He had three tight points in the anterior urethra, hut the deepest of them was only two (2) inches from the meatus. These anterior strictures were so small that the shaft of the Otis' instrument could not pass them, therefore the patient was first treated by having tunnelled steel instruments passed over a filiform bougie at intervals, commencing with No. 8 French tunnelled sound. This treatment was kept up over a month, and the instruments were passed into the bladder. He never had a chill during this treatment or any considerable disturbance. No haste was used in his treatment, and when he had been dilated so that the Otis instrument could pass, lie was cut upon this instrument to 35 French, the house surgeon considering that such an amount of incision was. necessary. Thereupon a number 28 French (17 English) was passed once gently into the bladder to see that the way was open. Six hours later there was a chill followed by high temperature, and death thirty hours after the operation. • ISBN : 144712068X

Download or read book The Scars of Venus written by J.David Oriel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade of the 15th century a new and deadly disease called Morbus Gallicus, or syphilis, appeared and spread rapidly throughout Europe. The effects of syphilis were so severe that it, and those suffering from it, where regarded with horror and despair. It is difficult for the modern reader to appreciate the fog of confusion which surrounded sexually transmitted diseases in earlier times. Those suffering with these diseases were often condemned as victims of their own "sinful lust of the flesh"; a judgement attitude which hindered most of the early attempts at control and treatment. Despite this general attitude, there were some doctors who persevered in their attempts to understand the causes and discover treatments for syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases. The Scars of Venus is illustrated with pictures of people, places, instruments and documents. It presents the historical background and achievements of the early venereologists through to the current venereologists' fight against HIV. This book will be of interest to anyone concerned with venereal diseases: doctors, nurses, counsellors, laboratory workers, medical historians, and those working in the areas of public/world health and the spread of infectious diseases.

Book James Joyce and the Burden of Disease

Download or read book James Joyce and the Burden of Disease written by Kathleen Ferris and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Joyce's near blindness, his peculiar gait, and his death from perforated ulcers are commonplace knowledge to most of his readers. But until now, most Joyce scholars have not recognized that these symptoms point to a diagnosis of syphilis. Kathleen Ferris traces Joyce's medical history as described in his correspondence, in the diaries of his brother Stanislaus, and in the memoirs of his acquaintances, to show that many of his symptoms match those of tabes dorsalis, a form of neurosyphilis which, untreated, eventually leads to paralysis. Combining literary analysis and medical detection, Ferris builds a convincing case that this dread disease is the subject of much of Joyce's autobiographical writing. Many of this characters, most notably Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom, exhibit the same symptoms as their creator: stiffness of gait, digestive problems, hallucinations, and impaired vision. Ferris also demonstrates that the themes of sin, guilt, and retribution so prevalent in Joyce's works are almost certainly a consequence of his having contracted venereal disease as a young man while frequenting the brothels of Dublin and Paris. By tracing the images, puns, and metaphors in Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, and by demonstrating their relationship to Joyce's experiences, Ferris shows the extent to which, for Joyce, art did indeed mirror life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a very fragile structure, the skin barrier is probably one of the most important organs of the body. Inward/out it is responsible for body integrity and outward/in for keeping microbes, chemicals, and allergens from penetrating the skin. Since the role of barrier integrity in atopic dermatitis and the relationship to filaggrin mutations was discovered a decade ago, research focus has been on the skin barrier, and numerous new publications have become available. This book is an interdisciplinary update offering a wide range of information on the subject. It covers new basic research on skin markers, including results on filaggrin and on methods for the assessment of the barrier function. Biological variation and aspects of skin barrier function restoration are discussed as well. Further sections are dedicated to clinical implications of skin barrier integrity, factors influencing the penetration of the skin, influence of wet work, and guidance for prevention and saving the barrier. Distinguished researchers have contributed to this book, providing a comprehensive and thorough overview of the skin barrier function. Researchers in the field, dermatologists, occupational physicians, and related industry will find this publication an essential source of information.

Book Genesis and Development of a Scientific Fact

Download or read book Genesis and Development of a Scientific Fact written by Ludwik Fleck and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-09-05 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in German in 1935, this monograph anticipated solutions to problems of scientific progress, the truth of scientific fact and the role of error in science now associated with the work of Thomas Kuhn and others. Arguing that every scientific concept and theory—including his own—is culturally conditioned, Fleck was appreciably ahead of his time. And as Kuhn observes in his foreword, "Though much has occurred since its publication, it remains a brilliant and largely unexploited resource." "To many scientists just as to many historians and philosophers of science facts are things that simply are the case: they are discovered through properly passive observation of natural reality. To such views Fleck replies that facts are invented, not discovered. Moreover, the appearance of scientific facts as discovered things is itself a social construction, a made thing. A work of transparent brilliance, one of the most significant contributions toward a thoroughly sociological account of scientific knowledge."—Steven Shapin, Science

  • ISBN : 0813548179
  • Pages : 390 pages

Download or read book The Burdens of Disease written by J. N. Hays and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of the original edition of The Burdens of Disease that appeared in ISIS stated, "Hays has written a remarkable book. He too has a message: That epidemics are primarily dependent on poverty and that the West has consistently refused to accept this." This revised edition confirms the book's timely value and provides a sweeping approach to the history of disease. In this updated volume, with revisions and additions to the original content, including the evolution of drug-resistant diseases and expanded coverage of HIV/AIDS, along with recent data on mortality figures and other relevant statistics, J. N. Hays chronicles perceptions and responses to plague and pestilence over two thousand years of western history. Disease is framed as a multidimensional construct, situated at the intersection of history, politics, culture, and medicine, and rooted in mentalities and social relations as much as in biological conditions of pathology. This revised edition of The Burdens of Disease also studies the victims of epidemics, paying close attention to the relationships among poverty, power, and disease.

Download or read book Painted Love written by Hollis Clayson and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2003-10-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engrossing book, Hollis Clayson provides the first description and analysis of French artistic interest in women prostitutes, examining how the subject was treated in the art of the 1870s and 1880s by such avant-garde painters as Cézanne, Degas, Manet, and Renoir, as well as by the academic and low-brow painters who were their contemporaries. Clayson not only illuminates the imagery of prostitution-with its contradictory connotations of disgust and fascination-but also tackles the issues and problems relevant to women and men in a patriarchal society. She discusses the conspicuous sexual commerce during this era and the resulting public panic about the deterioration of social life and civilized mores. She describes the system that evolved out of regulating prostitutes and the subsequent rise of clandestine prostitutes who escaped police regulation and who were condemned both for blurring social boundaries and for spreading sexual licentiousness among their moral and social superiors. Clayson argues that the subject of covert prostitution was especially attractive to vanguard painters because it exemplified the commercialization and the ambiguity of modern life.
