Book Daybook

Download or read book Daybook written by Anne Truitt and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-07-06 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautiful new edition of the cult classic that counts Zadie Smith and Rachel Kushner among its fans – with a new introduction by Celia Paul. ‘I am an artist. Even to write it makes me feel deeply uneasy.’ Renowned American artist Anne Truitt kept this illuminating and inspiring journal between 1974-8, determined to come to terms with the forces that shaped her art and life. She recalls her childhood on the eastern shore of Maryland, her career change from psychology to art, and her path to a sculptural practice that would ‘set colour free in three dimensions’. She reflects on the generous advice of other artists, watches her own daughters’ journey into motherhood, meditates on criticism and solitude, and struggles to find the way to express her vision. Resonant and true, encouraging and revelatory, Anne Truitt guides herself – and her readers – through a life in which domestic activities and the needs of children and friends are constantly juxtaposed against the world of colour and abstract geometry to which she is drawn in her art. Beautifully written and a rare window on the workings of a creative mind, Daybook showcases an extraordinary artist whose insights generously and succinctly illuminate the artistic process. 'Truitt wrote as she sculpted, returning to the past again and again to find fresh truths.' The New Yorker ‘This miracle of a book will inspire artists for generations to come.’ Celia Paul

Download or read book PROSPECT written by Anne Truitt and published by Scribner Book Company. This book was released on 1996-03-04 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Based on journals written in 1991 and 1992, Prospect contains Anne Truitt's luminous reflections on her rich, full life as an artist, mother, grandmother, and teacher. Preparing to confront the unpredictable twilight of life, Truitt charts her fears and triumphs, joys and sadness, her most poignant memories of the past and clearest visions for the future." "In the year of her seventieth birthday, events converge that force Truitt to reevaluate her life. She requests of and receives from her New York gallery a major retrospective of her thirty years of painting and sculpture, thus throwing her work into the public eye. Simultaneously, she is forcibly retired from the tenured position at the University of Maryland, which had granted her professional and financial security. In her introduction Truitt notes, "writing became in the course of the year a relentless exposure of myself to myself." Keenly observant, she faces her own vulnerability and draws knowledge and insight from sources as varied as Cicero, the Antarctic explorers, and her own travels in the Canadian wilderness." "Preparing for the New York retrospective and successive exhibits, Truitt remembers her inspirations, reflects on the development of her artistic methods and goals, and, above all, considers the meaning of both art and an artist's life. At the same time, she records the delights and tragedies that accompany a family's growth. For Truitt, art and life are inexorably joined, and her narrative sings with the colors and surfaces of her celebrated sculpture."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Drawing from Life

Download or read book Drawing from Life written by Jane Tolmie and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autobiography has seen enormous expansions and challenges over the past decades. One of these expansions has been in comics, and it is an expansion that pushes back against any postmodern notion of the death of the author/subject, while also demanding new approaches from critics. Drawing from Life: Memory and Subjectivity in Comic Art is a collection of essays about autobiography, semi-autobiography, fictionalized autobiography, memory, and self-narration in sequential art, or comics. Contributors come from a range of academic backgrounds including English, American studies, comparative literature, gender studies, art history, and cultural studies. The book engages with well-known figures such as Art Spiegelman, Marjane Satrapi, and Alison Bechdel; with cult-status figures such as Martin Vaughn-James; and with lesser-known works by artists such as Frédéric Boilet. Negotiations between artist/writer/body and drawn/written/text raise questions of how comics construct identity, and are read and perceived, requiring a critical turn towards theorizing the comics' viewer. At stake in comic memoir and semi-autobiography is embodiment. Remembering a scene with the intent of rendering it in sequential art requires nonlinear thinking and engagement with physicality. Who was in the room and where? What was worn? Who spoke first? What images dominated the encounter? Did anybody smile? Man or mouse? Unhinged from the summary paragraph, the comics artist must confront the fact of the flesh, or the corporeal world, and they do so with fascinating results.

Book The Journal of an Artist

Download or read book The Journal of an Artist written by MR David Palladini and published by Black Swan Press. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Journal of an Artist" is a bracingly honest look at a man who chose to honor his authentic path by devoting his life to art. Must one suffer to create art? Is an artist's life only unacknowledged work and unrecognized sacrifice? David's writings, and more importantly - his life and art - say no. Great beauty can come from joy just as easily, if not more so, than from pain and suffering. Born in Italy and emigrated to America as a child, David Palladini's dual cultural background is expressed in the lush creativity of his work. After studying art, photography, and film at New York's Pratt Institute, David's first professional assignment was as a photographer for the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. David is know for the intense colors and dramatic delicacy of his work. Having drawn a variety of works, from movie posters to magazine covers, David is also know for his creation of "The Aquarian Tarot" and "The New Palladini Tarot," both published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc. David has worked and lived in The Hamptons (New York State), Jamaica, and France. He currently lives in Newport Beach, California and continues to paint, write, and exhibit his work.

Book Baghdad Journal

Download or read book Baghdad Journal written by Steve Mumford and published by Drawn and Quarterly. This book was released on 2005-09-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An explosive conflict, as seen through the eyes of a war artist. Bagdad Journal is the outstanding culmination of four voyages to war-torn Iraq by artist Steve Mumford. In the long tradition of war artists, particularly Winslow Homer's work for Harper's Magazine, Mumford meticulously documents the everyday scenes of Iraq in bold, breathtaking watercolors and drawings and paints a human side of the war that can be lost in the immediacy of photographic and broadcast images. Not overtly political, Bagdad Journal presents portraits of life from all sides of the polarizing conflict. With sketch pad and notebook in hand, Mumford illuminates the routine activities of a nation in turmoil-from the individual soldiers of American platoons to Baghdad residents going about their daily lives amid the chaos surrounding them. There will be a traveling exhibit of artwork from Baghdad Journal and presentations by Mumford on his Iraq experience in conjunction with the publication of this book.
