Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story chronicles the life of a young Anglo-Saxon boy, Osgar, who is captured by raiding Vikings, who eventually becomes a seer-warrior in his new life. Unheard of? The story is set against the backdrop of the 9th-century struggle between Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings, the latter evolving from raiders to invaders, for control of these lands. After years of conflict there followed a period of compromise that saw the country split into the first north-south divide: Anglo-Saxon England and Danelaw. That arrangement eventually developed into England where two nations became one. Osgar, later Sigrvard, is the embodiment of two becoming one, Anglo-Saxon and Viking becomes English. The story is one of conquest and fantasy, loyalty and betrayal, men and gods. It is also a tale of exploration and expansion that extended Europe to all points of the compass: first travellers to the New World, southern expansion to Africa, eastwards to the Orient, arguably making the Vikings the world's first imperial power. And all placed on record in the rarest of rare, a 9th-century document discovered on the outskirts of York, Jorvik, the capital of Viking England... The Jorvik Chronicle.

Book excerpt: Magic, both benevolent (white) and malign (black), has been practiced in the British Isles since at least the Iron Age (800 BCE-CE 43). "Curse tablets"--metal plates inscribed with curses intended to harm specific people--date from the Roman Empire. The Anglo-Saxons who settled in England in the fifth and sixth centuries used ritual curses in documents, and wrote spells and charms. When they became Christians in the seventh century, the new "magicians" were saints, who performed miracles. When William of Normandy became king in 1066, there was a resurgence of belief in magic. The Church was able to quell the fear of magicians, but the Reformation saw its revival, with numerous witchcraft trials in the late 16th and 17th centuries.

Download or read book The Viking Blitzkrieg written by Martyn Whittock and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the Viking Wars had not taken place, would there have been a united England in the tenth century? Martyn Whittock believes not, arguing that without them there would have been no rise of the Godwin family and their conflict with Edward the Confessor, no Norman connection, no Norman Conquest and no Domesday Book. All of these features of English history were the products, or by-products, of these conflicts and the threat of Scandinavian attack. The wars and responses to them accelerated economic growth; stimulated state formation and an assertive sense of an English national identity; created a hybrid Anglo-Scandinavian culture that spread beyond the so-called Danelaw; and caused an upheaval in the ruling elite. By looking at the entire period of the wars and by taking a holistic view of their political, economic, social and cultural effects, their many-layered impact can at last be properly assessed.
