Book Water Life and Civilisation

Download or read book Water Life and Civilisation written by Steven Mithen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique interdisciplinary study of the relationships between climate, hydrology and human society from 20,000 years ago to the present day within the Jordan Valley. It describes how state-of-the-art models can simulate the past, present and future climates of the Near East, reviews and provides new evidence for environmental change from geological deposits, builds hydrological models for the River Jordan and associated wadis and explains how present day urban and rural communities manage their water supply. The volume provides a new approach and new methods that can be applied for exploring the relationships between climate, hydrology and human society in arid and semi-arid regions throughout the world. It is an invaluable reference for researchers and advanced students concerned with the impacts of climate change and hydrology on human society, especially in the Near East.

Book excerpt: This atlas aims to provide the reader with key pointers for a spatial analysis of the social, economic and political dynamics at work in Jordan, an exemplary country of the Middle East complexities. Being a product of seven years of scientific cooperation between Ifpo, the Royal Jordanian Geographic Center and the University of Jordan, it includes the contributions of 48 European, Jordanian and International researchers. A long historical part followed by sections on demography, economy, social disparities, urban challenges and major town and country planning, sheds light on the formation of Jordanian territories over time. Jordan has always been looked on as an exception in the Middle East due to the political stability that has prevailed since the country’s Independence in 1946, despite the challenge of integrating several waves of Palestinian, Iraqi and - more recently - Syrian refugees. Thanks to this stability and the peace accord signed with Israel in 1994, Jordan is one of the first countries in the world for development aid per capita.

Book The Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages of Southern Canaan

Download or read book The Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages of Southern Canaan written by Aren M. Maeir and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-07-08 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Late Bronze Age in the Levant is a period of much interest to archaeologists, historians and biblical scholars. This is a period with intense international relations, rich in ancient sources, which provide historical data for the period, and is a crucial formative period for the peoples and cultures who play central roles in the Hebrew Bible. Recent archaeological research in Israel and surrounding countries has provided new, exciting, and in some cases, groundbreaking finds, interpretations and understanding of this period. The fourteen papers in this volume represent the proceedings of a conference held at Bar-Ilan University in 2014 (with the additional of several invited papers not presented at the conference), which provide both overviews of Late Bronze Age finds from several important sites in Israel and surrounding countries, as well as several synthetic studies on the various issues relating to the period. These papers, by and large, represent a broad view of cuttting edge research in the archaeology of the ancient Levant in general, and on the Late Bronze Age specifically.

Book The Water of the Jordan Valley

Download or read book The Water of the Jordan Valley written by Heinz Hötzl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-09-27 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural saline water, waste water, and irrigation return flow endanger the groundwater aquifers in the Rift. In the long run this will ruin the socio-economic backbone of the settlements in the area. Sustainability of the water resources will only be achieved when the process of water replenishment and its underground flow is understood and water extraction is regionally controlled. Rare earth element and spider patterns are presented as new tools for studying the hydrology. Progress in 3-D modelling of groundwater flow proved successfully the impact of pumping on the surroundings of wells and overexploitation of aquifers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Pastor Eli Daniels's wife and brother ran away together, he was the one who lost--his family, his church, and his faith. All he has left are his four-year-old daughter and a little church in the world's smallest town. But he still has his speaking talent, and with it, he's sure he can build up their numbers so he can catch the attention of another mega-church. He needs to be back in the big time, where he belongs. Glory Matthews voted against hiring the new minister. He's single and handsome and more charismatic than any man has a right to be. He'll draw every man-hunting woman around. And because he's used to the big time, he won't stay long. But when Eli is with his daughter, he's down-to-earth, loving, and everything she could want, and Glory's heart melts like a forgotten candle burning in the night. If it's one thing Eli doesn't need, it's Glory Matthews. She's head-strong, pretty, faithful, and doesn't seem to be fazed by his "celebrity." But Glory is also everything he could ever want, and somehow this Jordan Valley miss just might help him find his faith and mend his heart.
