Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The story of modern medicine and bioethics—and, indeed, race relations—is refracted beautifully, and movingly.”—Entertainment Weekly NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE FROM HBO® STARRING OPRAH WINFREY AND ROSE BYRNE • ONE OF THE “MOST INFLUENTIAL” (CNN), “DEFINING” (LITHUB), AND “BEST” (THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER) BOOKS OF THE DECADE • ONE OF ESSENCE’S 50 MOST IMPACTFUL BLACK BOOKS OF THE PAST 50 YEARS • WINNER OF THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE HEARTLAND PRIZE FOR NONFICTION NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • Entertainment Weekly • O: The Oprah Magazine • NPR • Financial Times • New York • Independent (U.K.) • Times (U.K.) • Publishers Weekly • Library Journal • Kirkus Reviews • Booklist • Globe and Mail Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions. Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave. Henrietta’s family did not learn of her “immortality” until more than twenty years after her death, when scientists investigating HeLa began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. And though the cells had launched a multimillion-dollar industry that sells human biological materials, her family never saw any of the profits. As Rebecca Skloot so brilliantly shows, the story of the Lacks family—past and present—is inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of. Over the decade it took to uncover this story, Rebecca became enmeshed in the lives of the Lacks family—especially Henrietta’s daughter Deborah. Deborah was consumed with questions: Had scientists cloned her mother? Had they killed her to harvest her cells? And if her mother was so important to medicine, why couldn’t her children afford health insurance? Intimate in feeling, astonishing in scope, and impossible to put down, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks captures the beauty and drama of scientific discovery, as well as its human consequences.

This book was released on 2019-02-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Johns Hopkins Medical Journal, 1910, Vol. 21 From the convent school he probably went to the neighbour ing University of Saragossa. Possibly he may have studied for the priesthood, but however that may be be, there is evi dence that he was a precocious youth, and well read in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, the last two very unusual accomplishments at that period. We next hear of him at Toulouse, studying canon and civil law. He could not have been twenty when he entered the service of the Friar Quintana, confessor to the Emperor Charles V, apparently as his private secretary. In the suite of the Emperor he went to Italy, and was present when Pope and Emperor entered Bologna, and he saw the most powerful prince of the age at the head of veterans kneeling and kissing the feet of the Pope.' Here he had his first impression of the worldliness and mercenary character-of the Papacy, hatred of which, very soon after, we find to have become an obsession. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Johns Hopkins Hospital Bulletin, Vol. 31 We had of course regarded the whole alteration as due to loss of hydrochloric acid with the result that an excess of base had been left in the circulating fluids, so that the natural experiment would be the replacement of the chlorine ion by the introduction of hydrochloric acid. This was done several times but without much success (1620, 1622, 1709 and others), whereas the introduction Of sodium chloride has a life saving effect and the administration of sodium chloride continuously after the operation prevented the development of changes in the electrical excitability, disturbances of the alkali reserves or symptoms. The fate of the Na ion re quires explanation since it appears that so long as the 01 ion is supplied there is no heightened alkali reserve. The prompt effect of calcium salts in stopping parathyroid tetany led to their trial in some of these cases. The injection of calcium lactate, although it exerts a temporary effect in stopping the twitchings or modifying the convulsions, has no such controlling influence, as is seen in the tetany following parathyroidectomy after which an animal can be kept perfectly well for a long time by the proper administration of calcium. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland Medical Journal, Vol. 46: A Journal of Medicine and Surgery; December 31, 1902-December 31, 1903 The close relation existing between the central nervous system and the general circulatory system, through the vaso-m'otor centre in the medulla, ' the pneumogastric nerves and the many peripheral vaso-motor nerve fibres are illustrated by the remark able changes in rate, and especially in the tension of the pulse, in a variety of pathological conditions of the cranial contents. The most striking example of this is to be found in conditions of increased intracranial pressure, such as may be produced by the growth of tumors, depressed fractures of the skull, more strik ingly, by hemorrhage, from an intracranial vessel.
