Employing a wide variety of approaches and methodologies, the original and thematically linked essays discuss such problematic issues as the most appropriate site for professional education, the proper focus and content of the initial and on-going preparation of professionals, and the nature of both continuity and change in professional education. In the process, they raise challenging questions about the development of professional education in Canada and elsewhere from the early 19th century to the present day, in fields as diverse as the health sciences, law, engineering, social work, theology, and university teaching. An essential resource for those studying the professions, this book will also appeal to practitioners, professional associations, administrators, and faculty in professional schools, and to all those interested in the past, present, and future state of their professions.

Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century, Britons and Americans renewed their struggle over the legacy of the American Revolution, leading to a second confrontation that redefined North America. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Alan Taylor’s vivid narrative tells the riveting story of the soldiers, immigrants, settlers, and Indians who fought to determine the fate of a continent. Would revolutionary republicanism sweep the British from Canada? Or would the British contain, divide, and ruin the shaky republic? In a world of double identities, slippery allegiances, and porous boundaries, the leaders of the republic and of the empire struggled to control their own diverse peoples. The border divided Americans—former Loyalists and Patriots—who fought on both sides in the new war, as did native peoples defending their homelands. And dissident Americans flirted with secession while aiding the British as smugglers and spies. During the war, both sides struggled to sustain armies in a northern land of immense forests, vast lakes, and stark seasonal swings in the weather. After fighting each other to a standstill, the Americans and the British concluded that they could safely share the continent along a border that favored the United States at the expense of Canadians and Indians. Moving beyond national histories to examine the lives of common men and women, The Civil War of 1812 reveals an often brutal (sometimes comic) war and illuminates the tangled origins of the United States and Canada. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion was a key factor facilitating integration, assimilation, adaptation and acculturation among the United States Blacks in Canada during the 19th century. The Wesleyans, Methodists, British Methodists Episcopalians, Baptists and Presbyterians were some of the Protestant denominations instrumental in forging a foundation for the transition to freedom. Protestant churches played a crucial role as Blacks struggled to adapt to their new host society. An interesting phenomenon that emerged in this research is the similarities and links with Black churches in the United States. There was considerable communication between Blacks and Whites which overshadowed the racial problems in society. The main areas of this study dwell on the church’s role in education, development of Black leadership, assimilation and independence of Black churches. These themes are used in reconstructing and investigating the socio-religious encounter between Blacks, from the United States and Protestants who belonged mainly to the White churches in Upper Canada. There is also a focus on the educational nature and extent of the relationship of the Protestant church and Blacks. The relationship between Blacks and churches revealed the pre-occupation with education which became the guiding concept in the lives of Blacks.

Book Land Policies of Upper Canada

Download or read book Land Policies of Upper Canada written by Lillian F. Gates and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1968-12-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1763 to 1867 the land system of Upper Canada was one of the most important questions in the development of the new country. This detailed study of the subject examines Great Britain's plans for Canada after the conquest, the problems created by the royal "promise" of land to the loyalists, Lord Durham's Report, and the failure of the land policies to reach their economic and political objectives. In addition it covers the land problems in Canada after responsible government was achieved: Clergy Reserves, untenanted and abandoned land, settlement duties, speculation, wild land tax and assessment, and the activities of squatters. Based on Colonial Office depsatches, legislative records, the Crown Land Papers, newspapers and various private collections of documents, this work offers an accurate account of the social, economic and political aspects related to land policy in nineteenth-century Upper Canada.

Book Fifty Tales of Toronto

  • Author : Donald Jones
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 1992-12-15
  • ISBN : 1487590660
  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book Fifty Tales of Toronto written by Donald Jones and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1992-12-15 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Jones' walking tours of Toronto have drawn crowds of up to 5000 at a time. His 'Historic Toronto' column in the Star has proved one of the city's most widely read newspaper features. Now for the first time he has gathered together some of his personal favourites – stories of triumph and treachery, the celebrated and the notorious. The result is a richly entertaining collage of amazing and amusing tales of the city and its people. Here we learn that the first airmail plane in Canada landed in Toronto so loaded with liquor it could barely fly. We find out how a forgery by John Strachan brought tens of thousands of immigrants to the city. Jones recounts the visits to Toronto by great writers, including Oscar Wilde and Charles Dickens, and tells of Torontonians who made international names for themselves, like Bea Lillie and Elizabeth Arden. Old mysteries still unsolved are reconsidered: Was the founder of Upper Canada College the real hero of the battle of Waterloo? How did Prince George, remembered in the name of the Princes' Gates, really die? Did Toronto's Captain Roy Brown in fact kill the Red Baron during 'the most controversial 60 seconds in the history of aerial warfare'? At the heart of his stories are people. Some of their names have been forgotten and deserve to be remembered: Dr. Anderson Abbott, Canada's first black doctor, who was greatly admired by Lincoln; Margaret Saunders, whose book Beautiful Joe has sold 7 million copies to date; and Ernest Jones, who helped Freud escape from Austria and the Gestapo. Old Toronto comes vividly to life in these tales. For the hundreds of thousands of Star readers who love Donald Jones' columns, here is a collection of the best. And for those who have yet to discover the delights of his perspective on the city, Fifty Tales of Toronto provides a marvellous introduction to its history.
