Book The Trumpets of Jericho

Book excerpt: This fierce fable of childbirth by German Surrealist Unica Zürn was written after she had already given birth to two children and undergone the self-induced abortion of another in Berlin in the 1950s. Beginning in the relatively straightforward, if disturbing, narrative of a young woman in a tower (with a bat in her hair and ravens for company) engaged in a psychic war with the parasitic son in her belly, The Trumpets of Jericho dissolves into a beautiful nightmare of hypnotic obsession and mythical language, stitched together with anagrams and private ruminations. Arguably Zürn's most extreme experiment in prose, and never before translated into English, this novella dramatizes the frontiers of the body--its defensive walls as well as its cavities and thresholds--animating a harrowing and painfully, twistedly honest depiction of motherhood as a breakdown in the distinction between self and other, transposed into the language of darkest fairy tales. Unica Zürn (1916-70) was born in Grünewald, Germany. Toward the end of World War II, she discovered the realities of the Nazi concentration camps--a revelation which was to haunt and unsettle her for the rest of her life. After meeting Hans Bellmer in 1953, she followed him to Paris, where she became acquainted with the Surrealists and developed the body of drawings and writings for which she is best remembered: a series of anagram poems, hallucinatory accounts and literary enactments of the mental breakdowns from which she would suffer until her suicide in 1970.

When Arielle, one of the finest girls in his class, starts coming on to him once the pledge announcements are made, Jericho is determined to do anything to become a member… But as the initiation week becomes progressively harrowing, Jericho is forced to make choices he’s not entirely comfortable with. And one member seems to have it in for the sole female pledge in the group…a pledge who will stop at nothing to show she can handle the pressure. But when is she being pushed too far, and when should Jericho and his friends step in and risk losing their places in the pledging process? As Jericho becomes increasingly uneasy, his cousin Joshua breezes through the initiation, never thinking of the consequences, even when the fine line between fun and games, and life and death is crossed.

Book Something More Than Night

Download or read book Something More Than Night written by Ian Tregillis and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ian Tregillis's Something More Than Night is a Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler inspired murder mystery set in Thomas Aquinas's vision of Heaven. It's a noir detective story starring fallen angels, the heavenly choir, nightclub stigmatics, a priest with a dirty secret, a femme fatale, and the Voice of God. Somebody has murdered the angel Gabriel. Worse, the Jericho Trumpet has gone missing, putting Heaven on the brink of a truly cosmic crisis. But the twisty plot that unfolds from the murder investigation leads to something much bigger: a con job one billion years in the making. Because this is no mere murder. A small band of angels has decided to break out of heaven, but they need a human patsy to make their plan work. Much of the story is told from the point of view of Bayliss, a cynical fallen angel who has modeled himself on Philip Marlowe. The yarn he spins follows the progression of a Marlowe novel—the mysterious dame who needs his help, getting grilled by the bulls, finding a stiff, getting slipped a mickey. Angels and gunsels, dames with eyes like fire, and a grand maguffin, Something More Than Night is a murder mystery for the cosmos. Book The Junkers Ju 87 Stuka

Download or read book The Junkers Ju 87 Stuka written by Peter C. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utilizing this slow and relatively lightly armed WWII warplane the German Luftwaffe spearheaded the Blitzkrieg assaults from Poland in 1939, through to North Africa and beyond. From the very first day of WWII to the very last, the Ju 87 operated on the front line. Famed for its precision bombing, the Stuka's accuracy paid handsome dividends against such pinpoint targets as rail and road bridges, artillery, communications, fortresses, and enemy armor. Its added ability to linger over the combat zone providing continuous close air support to troops in the field and proven capability in the field proved a major asset to the Luftwaffe throughout WWII. For a land-based aircraft, the Stuka earned a formidable reputation as an anti-shipping weapon. Off the coast of Norway, Dunkirk, in the Mediterranean and Arctic, the English Channel, and Black Sea, the Ju 87 chalked up a formidable list of destroyed ships. Later in the war she achieved legendary fame as a specialist anti-tank and night-attack aircraft. Peter C. Smith, a leading authority on the history of dive-bombers and dive-bombing, relates the history of the Stuka and all its variants in great detail. Complemented by more than 250 photographs, comprehensive appendices, equipment and instrument layouts, and color profiles The Junkers Ju87 Stuka provides essential reading for researchers, historians, and modelers alike.

Book Dark Spring

  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2000
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 136 pages

Download or read book Dark Spring written by Unica Zürn and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An autobiographical novel that reads more like an exorcism than a novel. In terse and lucid prose, Zurn traces the roots to her obsessions: the exotic father whom she idolized, the impure mother she detested, the masochistic fantasies and onanistic rituals which she said described 'the erotic life of a little girl based on my own childhood.' Dark Spring is the story of a girls's simultaneous initiation to sexuality and madness, revealing a dark side of the 'mad love' so championed and romanticized by the (predominantly male) Surrealists.
