Today's tabloid headlines of passion and indignation at the behaviour of members of the royal and political establishment are paralleled by events of a century and more ago. The mid-Victorian period was dominated by a double standard which insisted on a rigid public respectability while condoning widespread sexual immorality by men. This hypocrisy led to extensive protests culminating in a series of highly publicized scandals in the 1880s and '90s which marked the triumph of dogmatic puritanical morality. A furious controversy raged during the 1860s and '70s over stealthy moves towards legalizing prostitution. One MP commented on the protest movement, in which early feminists such as Florence Nightingale and Josephine Butler featured prominently, 'We know how to manage any other opposition . . . but this is very awkward for us - this revolt of women. It is quite a new thing.' The general public often reacted violently to the protesters; on one occasion a mob threatened to burn down the hotel where Josephine Butler was staying. Nevertheless, the remainder of the nineteenth century saw the inexorable rise to a position of power and influence of the 'purity lobby', assisted by the major scandals of the period, which saw the downfall of Sir Charles Dilke, Charles Stewart Parnell and, most infamously of all, Oscar Wilde. This is a fascinating analysis of the politics of sexual morality in Victorian Britain, which not only provides a well-researched and radical new view of the period, but also raises many questions about the extent to which the Victorian period can be described as the rise of respectable society.

In this first anthology on race in early cinema, fourteen scholars examine the origins, dynamics, and ramifications of racism and Eurocentrism and the resistance to both during the early years of American motion pictures. Any discussion of racial themes and practices in any arena inevitably begins with the definition of race. Is race an innate and biologically determined "essence" or is it a culturally constructed category? Is the question irrelevant? Perhaps race exists as an ever-changing historical and social formation that, regardless of any standard definition, involves exploitation, degradation, and struggle. In his introduction, Daniel Bernardi writes that "early cinema has been a clear partner in the hegemonic struggle over the meaning of race" and that it was steadfastly aligned with a Eurocentric world view at the expense of those who didn't count as white. The contributors to this work tackle these problems and address such subjects as biological determinism, miscegenation, Manifest Destiny, assimilation, and nativism and their impact on early cinema. While others have attempted to explain or repair the break-up of the Jewish alliance on civil rights, Seth Forman here sets out to determine what Jewish thinking on the subject of Black Americans reveals about Jewish identity in the U.S. Why did American Jews get involved in Black causes in the first place? What did they have to gain from it? And what does that tell us about American Jews? In an extremely provocative analysis, Forman argues that the commitment of American Jews to liberalism, and their historic definition of themselves as victims, has caused them to behave in ways that were defined as good for Blacks, but which in essence were contrary to Jewish interests. They have not been able to dissociate their needs--religious, spiritual, communal, political--from those of African Americans, and have therefore acted in ways which have threatened their own cultural vitality. Avoiding the focus on Black victimization and white racism that often infuses work on Blacks and Jews, Forman emphasizes the complexities inherent in one distinct white ethnic group's involvement in America's racial dilemma.
