Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays, which derive from a symposium held at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005, tells the story of how medieval art was collected by both individuals and institutions in the American Midwest. This book will appeal to both medievalists and scholars of nineteenth- and twentieth century American history. In addition, it will also appeal to scholars who are interested in museum studies and the history of collecting. The essays in the first section, “Collecting and Displaying Medieval Art,” consider the formation of medieval art collections at influential cultural institutions in three of the most important centers of industry and culture in the Midwest: Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland. The second section, “Medieval Art as Inspiration and Education,” examines the motives of both private donors and museum professionals in forming collections and establishing period rooms and cloistered spaces at museums in Toledo, Kansas City, and St. Louis, among others. At the opposite end of the spectrum was a new trend in curatorial practice, beginning in the 1930s, that favored the dismantling of period rooms and espoused displaying historical works of art in more distinctly modern settings, a theme that pervades section three, “Medieval Art and Modernism.” An essay on medieval art in Midwestern university art museums and another one that considers the impact of works from medieval collections in special exhibitions serve as a remarkable coda to the rest of the volume. Two appendices follow this, one that provides an overview of medieval art collections in Midwestern university museums and another which provides a biographical sketch of prominent dealers of medieval art from 1900-1950.

Book Sacred Gifts and Worldly Treasures

Download or read book Sacred Gifts and Worldly Treasures written by Cleveland Museum of Art and published by Distribution General. This book was released on 2007 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the middle of the first middle of the first millennium the political landscape of Europe was a lawless wasteland where widely scattered monasteries sheltered what remained of classical culture as well as the seeds of what would become the lofty achievements of medieval art, scholasticism, and humanism. In these sanctuaries and in towns fortified against constant warfare, precious objects, carefully wrought by hand, were made to glorify God and celebrate the pleasures of life at court. A thousand years of aesthetic culture, from the austere spirituality of the Byzantine Icon of the Virgin to the exalted frivolity of the French Table Fountain, is presented in this book, in pages filled with golden caskets set with jewels, tiny paintings in sacred books, and saints and angels in marble and gold"--Book jacket.

Book The Olivetan Gradual

  • Author : Milvia Bollati
  • Publisher : Paul Holberton Publishing
  • Release : 2008

  • Pages : 74 pages

Download or read book The Olivetan Gradual written by Milvia Bollati and published by Paul Holberton Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illuminated manuscript, a gradual of large size which an entire congregation of monks could see and read as they sang in choir (just as they are shown doing in an illustration in the manuscript itself), was previously unknown to scholars and has only recently come to light. It was clearly produced for a monastery of the Olivetan order, a branch of the Benedictines with a particular reverence for the Virgin Mary - probably Santa Maria di Baggio near Milan. The manuscript includes fine miniatures which can be attributed to Girolamo da Milano (d. 1449), known as the "Olivetan Master." They add new information on the oeuvre and style of this master, previously known chiefly for illuminations on detached leaves or cuttings. This important new discovery is discussed by the Italian scholar Milvia Bolati, who uses it to throw further light on Girolamo, on the Olivetans, and on manuscript illumination in the period between late Gothic and early Renaissance.

Book excerpt: A prized possession of the Cistercian convent of Marienbrunn in Rulle near Osnabruck in northern Germany was its richly illuminated gradual dating to c. 1300, which is of great significance in the history of medieval art for several reasons. With 52 historiated initials iconographically complex in their literary quotations from the liturgy, the manuscript ranks as one of the most lavishly decorated books of its type to survive. Painted in an elegant courtly Gothic style, it is ascribed in a prefatory inscription to the nun Gisela von Kerssenbrock, who wrote, notated, and decorated the manuscript "with golden letters and beautiful images." Such an encyclopedic listing of a scribe-artist's labors is unparalleled in medieval scribal colophons. The high quality of the miniatures ranks her among the most gifted women artists of the Middle Ages. Gisela is depicted in two self-portraits within the manuscript, in one of which she is leading the nuns of Rulle in singing the Christmas hymn, visual evidence that she was the choirmistress at this convent. The manuscript's images reflect the intellectual ambience of encloistered nuns who were steeped in the annual liturgical cycle of feasts with its associated bible readings, theological commentary, sermons, music, dramatic ritual, and artistic decoration. As it was used in the nuns' daily celebration of the mass, the book is an eloquent witness of the communal religious life of medieval women rather than their private meditations or mystical experiences. This study explores the imagery and texts associated with major feasts of the liturgical year and the novel ways in which music and text are woven into the artistic program of Gisela's manuscript. In particular, her book shows the seminal importance of the Easter celebration for convent life, as well over half of its illustrations are clustered in the Easter season; and the manuscript repeatedly gives artistic expression to the nuns' hopes of heaven.
