Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Book). More than any other musician, Herbie Mann was responsible for establishing the flute as an accepted jazz instrument. Prior to his arrival, the flute was a secondary instrument for saxophonists, but Mann found a unique voice for the flute, presenting it in different musical contexts, beginning with Afro-Cuban, and then continuing with music from Brazil, the Middle East, the Caribbean, Japan, and Eastern Europe. As Mann once said, "People would say to me, 'I don't know where you are right now,' and I would respond, 'And you're not going to know where I'm going to be tomorrow.'" A self-described restless spirit, Herbie Mann also was a master at marketing himself. His insatiable curiosity about the world led him to experiment with different kinds of sounds, becoming a virtual Pied Piper of jazz. He attracted thousands to his concerts while alienating purists and critics alike. His career lasted for five decades, from his beginnings in a tiny Brooklyn nightclub to appearances on international stages. "I want to be as synonymous with the flute as Benny Goodman is for the clarinet," he was fond of saying. By the time he died of prostate cancer in 2003, he had fulfilled his desire.

Book excerpt: Jazz licks are among the most common patterns in improvisation-based music. These patternsare very helpful in understanding chord and note relationships, smooth transitionsbetween chords, and are a great way to improve agility on your instrument. The purpose of this book is to develop a better understanding of how certain tensions areused on different kinds of dominant chords, deduce situations in which certain tensioncombinations are 'available' over dominant chords, and learn how to apply these tensioncombinations to create lines and licks. This book will also help you develop your ear by applyingthese licks to all of the chord variations found throughout the book.Below are the fundamental methods for creating jazz licks;1) Using diatonic notes in chord tonality2) Incorporating non-diatonic notes into chord tonality3) Chromatic approaches to chord tonality*Please note* If you need more information about any of the methods listed above, it is recommendedthat you take the studies from this book with you to a professional instructor tohelp connect these concepts. There are many different jazz cadences in jazz song forms (e.g., II-V7-I, I-VI-II-V7-I, I-IV-I, V7-I,and so on¿). In this book, you will study the most common jazz cadence: the II-V7-I chordstructure. Each example has 3 variations in all 12 major keys. All examples are written in 4/4.Note that the patterns may/will contain chromatic note approaches, also known as jazzapproaches in different note amounts.Once you've completed the studies in the main section, there is a bonus section containingexamples with uncommon chord progressions in varying time signatures (e.g., 3/4, 7/4, 5/8,6/8 etc.) for you to try. Here, you are encouraged to reinforce the principles learned in themain section by applying them in different harmonic and time environments. The articulations in the book are written for the flute however, you as the reader are encouragedto adjust these articulations for your convenience. I hope to show you some of the techniques to engage with the sounds of traditional wooden flute, as well as teach you a few tunes along the way. There are lots of my own tunes included which are particularly suited to the silver flute and a few traditional tunes to help illustrate the techniques."a wealth of information for silver flute players who wish their instrument to sound more like a traditional wooden flute...deeply thought through and gives really useful practical advice. ...It really is an impressive book...both entertaining and really useful." - Living Tradition Magazine"hugely important book...Philippe is a master of those techniques...Irish Music Magazine's John Brophy's comment is quoted in the book; "I've heard nobody else who can make the Boehm flute sound like the true traditional thing, who can mould tone to the tune so nicely, the sheer musicality is exceptionally impressive."...This is an invaluable resource for Silver flute players and is a great teaching aid; it should be in every secondary school music room in the country." - Seán Laffey, IRISH MUSIC MAGAZINE"This book serves as an ideal introduction for any Boehm flute players who are interested in exploring the traditional language of Irish Music. One of the most important elements in idiomatic Irish flute playing is the execution of a wide range of ornaments, and they are clearly explaned her and backed up with examples from the repertoire. Barnes stresses the difference between classical ornamentation (which is essentially melodic) and Irish ornamentatin where the focus is on rhythm. He disusses differences in hand position and an appropriate approach to vibrato, and covers techniques such as feathering, cuts, rolls, cranns, bounces and slides. Each technique is clearly explaned in straigntforward language, and there is plenty of repertoire included to help skills develop in each area. Recommended." Carla Rees, British Flute Society Magazine
