Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Japanese Nation in Evolution: Steps in the Progress of a Great People It is a pleasing duty to acknowledge my vast and continual debt during forty years to those who mined the ore and furnished the raw materials of scholarship, out of which I have coined some of the newer opinions I send forth herewith for circulation. Since I have dealt much with origins, I am most indebted to native Japanese scholars who have cooperated with me, and to those pioneers who not only opened the treasures of the native literature, but with critical and comparative skill have appraised its worth - Messrs. Satow, Aston, and Chamberlain. The Records (Kojiki) and the Nihongi (Chronicles of Japan), written in the first quarter of the eighth century, have been constantly by me. To the Rev. John Batchelor, who has made the realm of Ainu scholarship his own, and to the writers in English and German for the Asiatic Societies of Japan, I am deeply indebted. Other authorities 1 linguists, archaeologists, ethnologists, investigators, - to whom I am obligated, are mentioned in the text, and to these and to any that may be unnamed, I am profoundly grateful. In the pronunciation of Japanese names and words, of which I have used as few as possible, - the Continental or Italian system of vowel sounds is used. Book Nationalism Liberalism and Progress The dismal fate of new nations

Download or read book Nationalism Liberalism and Progress The dismal fate of new nations written by Ernst B. Haas and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has global liberalism made the nation-state obsolete? Or, on the contrary, are primordial nationalist hatreds overwhelming cosmopolitanism? To assert either theme without serious qualification, according to Ernst B. Haas, is historically simplistic and morally misleading. Haas describes nationalism as a key component of modernity and a crucial instrument for making sense of impersonal, rapidly changing, and heterogeneous societies. He characterizes nationalism as a feeling of collective identity, a mutual understanding experienced among people who may never meet but who are persuaded that they belong to a community of kindred spirits. Without nationalism, there could be no large integrated state. He explores nationalism in five societies that had achieved the status of nation-states by about 1880: the United States, Britain, France, Germany, and Japan.

Book Japan on Display

Download or read book Japan on Display written by Morris Low and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixty years on from the end of the Pacific War, Japan on Display examines representations of the Meiji emperor, Mutsuhito (1852-1912) and his grandson the Showa emperor, Hirohito who was regarded as a symbol of the nation, in both war and peacetime. Much of this representation was aided by the phenomenon of photography. The introduction and development of photography in the nineteenth century coincided with the need to make Hirohito’s grandfather, the young Meiji Emperor, more visible. Photo books and albums became a popular format for presenting seemingly objective images of the monarch, reminding the Japanese of their proximity to the Emperor, and the imperial family. In the twentieth century, these 'national albums’ provided a visual record of wars fought in the name of the Emperor, while also documenting the reconstruction of Tokyo, scientific expeditions, and imperial tours. Drawing on archival documents, photographs, and sources in both Japanese and English, this book throws new light on the history of twentieth-century Japan and the central role of Hirohito. With Japan’s defeat in the Pacific War, the Emperor was transformed from wartime leader to peace-loving scientist. Japan on Display seeks to understand this reinvention of a more 'human’ Emperor and the role that photography played in the process.

Book The Pursuit of Power in Modern Japan 1825 1995

Download or read book The Pursuit of Power in Modern Japan 1825 1995 written by Chushichi Tsuzuki and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-04-13 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new history of modern Japan covers its remarkable transformation from a small country on the fringe of international politics to the major world power it is today. Professor Tsuzuki traces Japan's pursuit of power, first by military and then by economic means, from her attempts to replace China at the centre of the Confucian Middle Kingdom; through the Meiji nationalist response to the inroads of nineteenth century western imperialism; and on to the post-war USJapanese alliance powering the economic miracle of the last half of the twentieth century. He examines Japan's political, intellectual, and industrial development throughout the last two centuries, with special attention to the wars that were fought, and argues that the history of Japan's modernization was closely linked to the growth of Japan's own imperialism. Tsuzuki goes on to reveal how some of the factors which contributed to remaking Japan as an economic giant have also been responsible for her recent economic and political difficulties.

Book Congress and the Foreign Policy Process

Download or read book Congress and the Foreign Policy Process written by Cecil V. Crabb, Jr. and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2000-02-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this highly original and thoroughly informed study, Cecil V. Crabb, Jr., Glenn Antizzo, and Leila S. Sarieddine identify and examine recurring modes or patterns of legislative behavior over the span of America's diplomatic experience. Although congressional involvement in foreign policy making has received much scholarly attention, this work is groundbreaking in that it focuses on those patterns of congressional conduct that have repeated themselves over time and, on the basis of experience, will probably continue to occur. Thus it creates a large, predictable framework of legislative activity concerning America's problems abroad to which students of U.S. foreign policy can relate Congress's actions in any era. The authors identify four models of legislative conduct -- congressional assertiveness and activism in foreign affairs, congressional acquiescence in diplomatic leadership by the president, a bipartisan approach, and a division-of-labor model in which both the president and Congress play significant but essentially different roles. In examining each of these modes, the authors explore the circumstances and factors that gave rise to each pattern and evaluate its positive and negative results for the overall foreign policy of the United States. Brimming with lively language and invaluable observations, Congress and the Foreign Policy Process offers a thought- provoking means to understanding a complex and important area in the study of American government.
