In fact, marketing to the average Japanese firm is not a priority item. To succeed in Japan, they concentrate instead on production quality and low prices. This fascinating look at the cultural differences, reflected in their marketing practices, reveals the advantages and disadvantages of Japanese marketing practices. The author argues that as the advantages of a protected market and superior production and technology disappear, the Japanese must develop a new marketing process. Examples of both Japanese and foreign firms operating in Japan highlight each section. Marketing Japanese Style examines how Japanese firms actually market to their Japanese customers. Included in the analysis is a very concise marketing plan, which will assist Arlington Plating Company in making the decision of whether or not they should proceed. In this marketing plan, many factors that could affect the company’s success are reviewed; such as the legal environment of Japan, the cultural and political environment, as well as the economic environment. Along with those factors is the competitive environment. We not only looked at the general competitive environment of other chroming services, but specific competition as well. In general terms, we concluded that Arlington Plating Company’s toughest competition would most likely be Japan’s quickly developing country. The continuous updating of the company’s plating technology will potentially be exhausting and a difficult hurdle to overcome. When speaking in specifics, there are a few other plating and chroming companies that will be competing in unison with our service. Furthermore, Carbondale Consulting Crew went very in-depth when carefully choosing a target market. With Japan being one of the top leaders in car and motorcycle manufacturing, it was decided it would be tactful to target the three leading car manufacturers, as well as the three leading motorcycle manufacturers: Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki. Other things to consider were strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Strengths and Weaknesses included would be APC’s unique technique and sustainable competitive advantages such as patents (strength) and unawareness of doing business internationally (weakness). Opportunities and threats include the fact that Japan is one of the top vehicle manufacturers in the world (opportunity), and competition (threat). It was decided by the Carbondale Consulting Crew that Arlington Plating Company’s mode of entry would be licensing, due to the fact that contractual agreements are normally the most successful modes for business-to-business industries. Projected profits were hypothesized as well in our analysis. Finally, a plan for promotion, product, price, and physical distribution was implemented.

Book excerpt: At the start of the twenty-first century, the Japanese financial system is undergoing a major transformation. This process is spurred by a sense of crisis. Dominated by large institutions, the Japanese banking system has suffered from serious problems with non-performing loans since the early 1990s, when the Japanese stock market and urban real estate market both crashed. Delays in responding to these twin asset bubbles, by both regulatory authorities and the banks themselves, made matters worse and led to a banking crisis in late 1997 and early 1998. Not anticipating this setback, in late 1996 the Japanese government inaugurated its Big Bang of comprehensive financial deregulation designed to complete the process of creating `free, fair, and open financial markets'. Beginning in late 1998 and early 1999 the government finally embarked on a major rehabilitation of the Japanese banking system, including making available some Yen 60 trillion (approximately USD 500 billion) of government funds to recapitalize fifteen major banks, adequately fund the deposit insurance program, and write off the bad loans of nationalized or bankrupted banks. One result of this reform process is that the Ministry of Finance (MOF), which dominated Japanese financial system policy for most of the post-war period, has been stripped of most of its former regulatory powers. The purpose of this book is to describe, analyze, and evaluate the process that is transforming the Japanese financial system. The chapters address various issues relating to the transition of the Japanese financial system from a bank-centered and relationship-based system to a competitive market-based system. Questions taken up include: Why did Japanese banks get into such serious trouble? Why has the MOF lost its immense power? How will the Big Bang's financial deregulation further change the Japanese financial system, including the huge government financial institutions and postal savings system? What are some of the broader implications of this transition? The book is divided into three parts: Part I considers the origins of Japan's banking crisis; Part II focuses on five particularly important areas of major actual and potential changes; Part III addresses the effects of the Big Bang, including its potential systemic externalities. Taken together, this book offers an unusually up-to-date, comprehensive and thorough appraisal and evaluation of the profound changes occurring in Japan's financial system.

Changes in corporate governance were widely discussed during that decade in studies on “Japanese management.” These discussions have resulted in little progress, however, since Americanization became the dominant discourse concerning governance and the management system. There have been few studies conducted from an academic point of view on the internal aspects of organizations that practice traditional Japanese management theory. This book examines how, and the degree to which, the development of market principles accompanying the advances of globalization has affected the traditional Japanese system. It focuses on four aspects of corporate management: management institutions, strategy, organization, and human resource management. The aggregation of the new management system in Japanese companies is regarded as a distinctive Japanese-style system of management. With emphasis on these four aspects, research was conducted on the basic structure of that system, following changes in the market, technology, and society. Further, specific functions of the basic structure of the Japanese-style management system were studied. Those findings are included here, along with a discussion and analysis of the direction of future changes.
