Book The Norwegian American Lutheran Experience in 1950s Japan

Download or read book The Norwegian American Lutheran Experience in 1950s Japan written by Kate Allen and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stepping Up to the Cold War Challenge: The Norwegian-American Lutheran Experience in 1950s Japan describes the events that led to the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELC), an American Christian denomination, to respond to General MacArthur’s call for missionaries. This Church did not initially respond, but did so in 1949 only after their missionaries had been expelled from China due to the victory of communist forces on the mainland. Because they feared Japan would also succumb to communism in less than ten years, the missionaries evaded ecumenical cooperation and social welfare projects to focus on evangelism and establishing congregations. Many of the ELC missionaries were children and grandchildren of Norwegian immigrants who had settled as farmers on the North American Great Plains. Based on interview transcripts and other primary sources, this book intimately describes the personal struggles of individuals responding to the call to be a missionary, adjusting to life in Japan, learning Japanese, raising a family, and engaging in mission work. As the Cold War threat diminished and independence movements elsewhere were ending colonialism, missionaries were compelled to change methods and attitudes. The 1950s was a time when missionaries went out much in the same manner that they did in the nineteenth century. Through the voices of the missionaries and their Japanese coworkers, the book documents how many of the traditional missionary assumptions begin to be questioned.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Japan Christian Yearbook, 1951 The Japan Christian Yearbook once again appears in its prewar format designed to report the events of the single preceding year. Still, the ten stormy years during which this book was not published must receive additional coverage in the following pages. Last year's book could only scratch the surface of momentous happenings hitherto unvoiced. And the Yearbook welcomes to its pages the presence of reports of new missionary groups and the histories of their beginnings reporting for the first time. Book The Japan Christian Yearbook 1968 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Japan Christian Yearbook 1968 Classic Reprint written by Hallam C. Shorrock Jr. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Japan Christian Yearbook, 1968 As Sadao Watanabe's special jacket for this 1968 Japan Christian Yearbook indicates, this is a special issue. It is a special issue for two reasons: 1) It commemorates the Centennial observance of the Meiji Restoration of 1868; 2) It is the first Japan Christian Yearbook: to be prepared and issued under joint Protestant and Roman Catholic auspices. In connection with the Centennial observance of the Meiji Restoration, which restored Japan as a strong and united nation within the world's community of nations, an attempt has been made by the Editors and Editorial Committee of the 1968 Japan Christian Yearbook to: 1) review and analyze the planting and development of Christianity in Japan; 2) Show the role which Christianity has played in Japan's modernization; and, 3) evaluate the place of Christianity in both present and future Japanese thought and culture. In reference to the second special and unique character of this issue of the Yearbook - its being a product of joint Pro testant and Roman Catholic efforts - the Editorial Committee has from the very beginning rejected any idea of speaking about Protestant or Catholic points of view, no matter how legitimate such a distinction might be theologically or ecclesiastically. In other words, we have resolved to approach our common tasks simply as Christians. This stance has been strengthened by the participation of some' outstanding non-christians in the ecumenical dialogue which is repre sented in these pages. It is also a sacred duty for the editor to express his sincere appreciation for the hearty cooperation and help rendered by Christian friends in this country. Different as they may be in their theological, political and social points of view, they are all uhited in trying to describe the events and affairs, religious and otherwise, as objectively and impartially as possible. It is hoped that the articles in this volume will contribute much to the proper understanding and appreciation of Christianity in present day Japan. This year may seem to be a less eventful than the years of the Protestant Centenary (1959) and the World Convention of Christian Education Nevertheless, this has been an eventful year. The significance of the several events must be properly appraised. Mr. Muto is an excellent writ er who gives an unprejudiced observation on social affairs from a Christian point of View. Dr. Kuwada's article on religious freedom will throw much light on our understand ing of the shinto-shrine problem in this country. It is an article worth perusal. Backed by the world-wide prosperity, Japan's foreign trade expanded. However, during the latter part of the year the favorable international balance was rapidly reduced and by the end of the year an alarming stage had been reached. The balance Of foreign exchange showed a favorable figure over a period Of two years from 1954 to 1955, and in 1956 saw a sudden increase in payments. Though a slight black figure was kept on the balance sheet, it showed a big red figure in the actual balance and foreign currency reserves decreased rapidly. As was pointed out in the Economic White Paper, the situation was due primarily to too rapid expansion and to the ia vestment boom which caused the increase in imports. The so-called Quantity Boom from 1956 to the early part of 1957 and the innovation boom with its world-wide background involved the modernization and expansion Of facilities in all industries. However, the rapid expansion was accompanied by not a few danger signals which should not be overlooked. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
