Book Religion and Society in Post emancipation Jamaica

Download or read book Religion and Society in Post emancipation Jamaica written by Robert J. Stewart and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role did religion or the agents of religion, both European and Afro-Jamaican, play in the conflicts that characterized the formation of a creole society in Jamaica after emancipation? Beginning from this question, Robert J. Stewart has produced the most comprehensive available treatment of the religious, social, and cultural history of nineteenth-century Jamaica. This remarkable volume explores the interaction of two Christianities, one European and the other African-based. It examines the organization, presence, politics, and mission philosophy of the major Christian denominations, as well as the creative responses of Afro-Jamaicans to evangelization. The ideological, theological, and racial assumptions embraced by the various denominations and missionaries prevented them from valuing Africanisms in the religious and cultural heritage of Afro-Jamaicans and, with Baptist exceptions, from identifying with the latter's aspirations and social problems. In consequence, Afro-Jamaican religion became a source of identity and resistance against European cultural hegemony in Jamaica. Drawing on rich troves of documents unavailable in the United States, Stewart develops major new accounts of the processes of syncretism and creolization. His grasp of European intellectual history and deft critiques of prior scholarship add to the importance of this work. An excellent raconteur, the author also presents a vivid portrait gallery of both missionaries and Afro-Jamaicans during this crucial period in the island's history.

Book Religion Help or Hindrance to Development

Download or read book Religion Help or Hindrance to Development written by Kenneth Mtata and published by Evangelische Verlagsanstalt. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decline of religion in the Western world used to be regarded as a direct consequence of development, and it was assumed that this would also occur in the global South once the same levels of economic development had been reached. The current flourishing of religion in the global South and the increased awareness of its significance in the global North prove that religion continues to play a crucial role. In those contexts where religion frames reality, development cannot ignore religion. This collection of essays by scholars and development practitioners from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin and North America explores the fascinating interface between religion and development as well as the negative and positive potential of religion in development. With contributions by Karel Th. August, Michael Biehl, Carlos Bonilla, Theresa Carino, Andreas Heuser, Eberhard Hitzler, Lindora Howard-Diawara, Martin Junge, Rebecca Larson, Michael Martin, Madipoane Masenya (ngwan'a Mphahlele), Johnson Mbillah, Ambrose Moyo, Kenneth Mtata, Samuel Ngun Ling, Kjell Nordstokke, Muriel Orevillo-Montenegro, Claudia Warning abd Vítor Westhelle.

Book A History of Global Anglicanism

Download or read book A History of Global Anglicanism written by Kevin Ward and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-23 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglicanism can be seen as irredeemably English. In this book Kevin Ward questions that assumption. He explores the character of the African, Asian, Oceanic, Caribbean and Latin American churches which are now a majority in the world-wide communion, and shows how they are decisively shaping what it means to be Anglican. While emphasising the importance of colonialism and neo-colonialism for explaining the globalisation of Anglicanism, Ward does not focus predominantly on the Churches of Britain and N. America; nor does he privilege the idea of Anglicanism as an 'expansion of English Christianity'. At a time when Anglicanism faces the danger of dissolution Ward explores the historically deep roots of non-Western forms of Anglicanism, and the importance of the diversity and flexibility which has so far enabled Anglicanism to develop cohesive yet multiform identities around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a health professional, personal conversations with thousands of women from around the world revealed one trend. They had little self-worth, were not empowered and others saw them similarly. It must be noted that even historians portray no ancient writing as unique as the bible, whose successful female characters existed within an exclusively male dominant culture when women were excluded from the population statistic of their times (Exodus. 11:37) and (Matt.14:21 and 15:38). Significant changes are occurring in some areas of the world as women struggle for their rights to freedom and equity. While writing this book, British Broadcasting Cooperation (BBC) highlighted areas of breakthrough, the first story women drivers in Saudi Arabia allowed obtaining driver’s license. The second story featured a stewardess on a Turkish Airline taking legal action against the Airline for been paid less than her male counterpart. The third Malala Yousafzai (Noble Peace Prize Winner) who was shot in her head by the Taliban 2012 for campaigning for education among girls was fit to return home after six years. The fourth a major historical land mark; her campaign for women’s right to vote during the 19th Century was memorialized in 2018 more than one hundred years later. In her honor Millicent Farcet the first female statue was erected and unveiled in London. Secret: Fame or Failure provides unbiased, biblical solutions, empowering women by positive role models (although not exclusively for women). It features life in the palace and life among ordinary people who did uncommon things. This unique book enhances the knowledge of men and women who have read and studied the bible for many years creating a hunger for cultural, ancestral heritage within scriptures. It is saturated with revelation and teachings linking the lives of the biblical women to women today.

Book excerpt: In the midst of gangland activities during the Roaring Twenties, a thief plagued the New York City area by breaking into people's homes and stealing radios, possibly the costliest thing a family could own. Not only did the crimes deprive families of property and security, but they also resulted in the injuries of three NYPD officers and the death of officer Arthur Kenney. Based on interviews and trial transcripts, this book documents the search for the Radio Burglar, which turned into a wide-spread manhunt. Initially perplexed by the case, authorities eventually overcame great odds to achieve a conviction that has received praise in the following decades. But nine years later, the devastating effect on his family and friends of Arthur Kenney's loss was prolonged when they were involved in a second murder trial that riveted the attention of the city and country.
