Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These eight brutally beautiful stories are struck full of fragmented dreams, with highly developed thieves, misadventurers, and displaced characters all heaving through a human struggle to anchor themselves in a new home or sometimes a new reality. This book is about young Nigerian immigrants who bilocate, trek through the desert, become temporary Mormons, sneak through Russia, and yearn for new life in strange new territories that force them to confront what it means to search for a connection far from home. Japa and Other Stories came out of a struggle Iheoma Nwachukwu faced when trying to orient himself in the United States of 2017 to 2021, when attitudes toward immigrants suddenly shifted. The Japa characters explored in this book are immigrants who have no plans to return to their home country—for voluntary reasons—although they retain a strong connection to home.

Book The Golden Summary of Cinggis Qayan

Download or read book The Golden Summary of Cinggis Qayan written by Leland Liu Rogers and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Golden Summary of Cinggis Qayan is the earliest post-Mongol Empire period compilation of legends of the Chinggis Khaan mythos known to date. These stories are the original legends from which many later Chinggis Khaan Chronicles were based and were central to the mythos of the Cult of Chinggis Khaan. The stories within legitimize the rules of Chinggis Khaan and his descendants through divine acts, but also clearly show the human side of Chinggis Khaan, of how he erred from lust and anger, and of his willingness to correct his mistakes, to listen to reason, thus making him the great just and righteous emperor. This book contains together with extensive commentary the first full Latin transcription, English translation and word index of the pages unearthed in Inner Mongolia in the Mid-20th Century.

Book The Pagan Nuptials of Julia and Other Stories

Download or read book The Pagan Nuptials of Julia and Other Stories written by Keith Henderson and published by DC Books. This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pagan Nuptials of Julia chronicles the lives of ordinary English-speaking Quebeckers who "did not go the other way" down the 401, a neglected Canadian minority that saw its treasured world sacrificed by statist deceit and disowned with "stricken, evasive looks" even by its own kind. With a vivid, contrarian insight, Keith Henderson shows us that not all change is even-handed or mending, and that when it embodies "refinement" and "necessary humanity," the Past merits passionate preservation. Contemplating these at times gothic, always superbly crafted tales, alert readers will find themselves querying their fashionable complacencies while they ponder a vision conservative in the very best of senses -- one that revives the classical faith in human bonds and meaning, and prompts us to remember that we are "born into the arms of love." Reminiscent of the works of Hawthorne, Mansfield, Mann, and Sinclair Ross, Keith Henderson's The Pagan Nuptials of Julia presents the brilliant, interrogative creations of one of Canada's finest "journalists of the soul."

Book The Grateful Elephant and Other Stories Translated from the P li

Download or read book The Grateful Elephant and Other Stories Translated from the P li written by Eugene Watson Burlingame and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THESE stories are said to have been related by Gotama Buddha for the purpose of conveying to his hearers moral and religious lessons and the lessons of common sense. Gotama Buddha was born nearly twenty-five centuries ago in the city of Kapila, in Northeast India. Kapila was the principal city of the Sakya tribe, and his father was king of the tribe. Gotama was his family name. Buddhameans Awakened or Enlightened, that is to say, awakened or enlightened to the cause and the cure of human suffering. The Buddhist Scriptures tell us that when Gotama was born, the angels rejoiced and sang. An aged wise man inquired: “Why doth the company of angels rejoice?” They replied: “He that shall become Buddha is born in the village of the Sakyas for the welfare and happiness of mankind; therefore are we joyful and exceeding glad.” The wise man hastened to the king’s house, and said: “Where is the child? I, too, wish to see him.” They showed him the child. When he saw the child, he rejoiced and was exceeding glad. And he took him in his arms, and said: “Without an equal is he! foremost among men!” Then, because he was an old man, and knew that he was soon to die, he became sorrowful and wept tears. Said the Sakyas: “Will any harm come to the child?” “No,” replied the wise man, “this child shall one day become Buddha; out of love and pity for mankind he shall set in motion the Wheel of Religion; far and wide shall his religion be spread. But as for me, I have not long to live; before these things shall come to pass, death will be upon me. Therefore am I stricken with woe, overwhelmed with sorrow, afflicted with grief.” Seven days after Gotama was born, his mother died, and he was brought up by his aunt and step-mother. When he was nineteen years old, he married his own cousin. For ten years he lived a life of ease, in the enjoyment of all the comforts and luxuries which riches and high position could give him. When he was twenty-nine years old, a change came over him.

Vollmann, author of the National Book Award winner Europe Central In this magnificent new work of fiction, his first in nine years, celebrated author William T. Vollmann offers a collection of ghost stories linked by themes of love, death, and the erotic. A Bohemian farmer’s dead wife returns to him, and their love endures, but at a gruesome price. A geisha prolongs her life by turning into a cherry tree. A journalist, haunted by the half-forgotten killing of a Bosnian couple, watches their story, and his own wartime tragedy, slip away from him. A dying American romances the ghost of his high school sweetheart while a homeless salaryman in Tokyo animates paper cutouts of ancient heroes. Are ghosts memories, fantasies, or monsters? Is there life in death? Vollmann has always operated in the shadowy borderland between categories, and these eerie tales, however far-flung their settings, all focus on the attempts of the living to avoid, control, or even seduce death. Vollmann’s stories will transport readers to a fantastical world where love and lust make anything possible.
