Since then, these classical artinian rings have continued to fascinate ring theorists with their abundance of properties and structural depth. In 1978, M Harada introduced a new class of artinian rings which were later called Harada rings in his honour. Quasi-Frobenius rings, Nakayama rings and Harada rings are very closely interrelated. As a result, from a new perspective, we may study the classical artinian rings through their interaction and overlap with Harada rings. The objective of this seminal work is to present the structure of Harada rings and provide important applications of this structure to the classical artinian rings. In the process, we cover many topics on artinian rings, using a wide variety of concepts from the theory of rings and modules. In particular, we consider the following topics, all of which are currently of much interest and ongoing research: Nakayama permutations, Nakayama automorphisms, Fuller's theorem on i-pairs, artinian rings with self-duality, skew-matrix rings, the classification of Nakayama rings, Nakayama group algebras, the Faith conjecture, constructions of local quasi-Frobenius rings, lifting modules, and extending modules. In our presentation of these topics, the reader will be able to retrace the history of artinian rings.

We assume the famil iarity with rings usually acquired in standard undergraduate algebra courses. Our general approach is categorical rather than arithmetical. The continuing theme of the text is the study of the relationship between the one-sided ideal structure that a ring may possess and the behavior of its categories of modules. Following a brief outline of set-theoretic and categorical foundations, the text begins with the basic definitions and properties of rings, modules and homomorphisms and ranges through comprehensive treatments of direct sums, finiteness conditions, the Wedderburn-Artin Theorem, the Jacobson radical, the hom and tensor functions, Morita equivalence and duality, de composition theory of injective and projective modules, and semi perfect and perfect rings. In this second edition we have included a chapter containing many of the classical results on artinian rings that have hdped to form the foundation for much of the contemporary research on the representation theory of artinian rings and finite dimensional algebras. Both to illustrate the text and to extend it we have included a substantial number of exercises covering a wide spectrum of difficulty. I taught this course in the Fall of 1983, and more recently in the Spring of 1990, both times focusing on the theory of noncommutative rings. This book is an outgrowth of my lectures in these two courses, and is intended for use by instructors and graduate students in a similar one-semester course in basic ring theory. Ring theory is a subject of central importance in algebra. Historically, some of the major discoveries in ring theory have helped shape the course of development of modern abstract algebra. Today, ring theory is a fer tile meeting ground for group theory (group rings), representation theory (modules), functional analysis (operator algebras), Lie theory (enveloping algebras), algebraic geometry (finitely generated algebras, differential op erators, invariant theory), arithmetic (orders, Brauer groups), universal algebra (varieties of rings), and homological algebra (cohomology of rings, projective modules, Grothendieck and higher K-groups). In view of these basic connections between ring theory and other branches of mathemat ics, it is perhaps no exaggeration to say that a course in ring theory is an indispensable part of the education for any fledgling algebraist. The purpose of my lectures was to give a general introduction to the theory of rings, building on what the students have learned from a stan dard first-year graduate course in abstract algebra.

Book excerpt: The Jacobson radical is a very significant radical in rings.It is well known in ring theory that the right and left Jacobson radicals of a ring are the same but a right(left)primitive ring need not be a left(right)primitive ring.No true generalization of Wedderburn-Artin theorem of rings was developed to near-rings which involves direct product of matrix near-rings.This requires the right Jacobson radicals of near-rings. Three right Jacobson radicals are introduced and it is established that they are all Kurosh-Amitsur radicals in the class of all near-rings in which the constant part of a near-ring is an ideal of that near-ring.Their relations with the existing radicals of near-rings are presented. Also another three right Jacobson radicals are introduced and it is established that they are all Kurosh-Amitsur radicals in the class of all near-rings and are also ideal-hereditary in the class of all zero-symmetric near-rings. Semisimple classes of these Jacobson radicals are studied and some generalizations of Wedderburn-Artin theorem of rings are presented.
