A note from the Author; Kaylin Stinski: My personal history with Jack Russell Terriers started while I was working in veterinary medicine. One of our clients had worked in Jack Russell rescue for years, and I often worked with her fosters, which gave me a well-rounded introduction to the breed. She then decided to transition into breeding. After my client’s dog had its first litter, I knew that I wanted to add one to my home. Two years later, I reserved a pup. Being in the veterinary field, I was blessed with a full maternity experience. I got to see the pups in-utero on radiographs and ultrasound. I got to see them a couple of days after they were born, again when they came in for their first exams, and when my puppy was weaned, he spent the night with me in the hospital as I was working on patients. He was born on October 30 and was given the name Goblin, which I promptly changed to Marty McFly, and he has been my constant companion since that night. Having a Jack Russell Terrier is no small feat; it can be very challenging at times, but I have never regretted opening my heart to one, and I look forward to sharing my experiences with you.

Download or read book Training the Best Dog Ever written by Larry Kay and published by Workman Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Training the Best Dog Ever, originally published in hardcover as The Love That Dog Training Program, is a book based on love and kindness. It features a program of positive reinforcement and no-fail techniques that author Dawn Sylvia-Stasiewicz used to train the White House dog, Bo Obama, and each of Senator Ted Kennedy’s dogs, among countless others. Training the Best Dog Ever relies on trust and treats, not choke collars; on bonding, not leash-yanking or reprimanding. The five-week training program takes only 10 to 20 minutes of practice a day and works both for puppies and for adult dogs that need to be trained out of bad habits. Illustrated with step-by-step photographs, the book covers hand-feeding; crate and potty training; and basic cues—sit, stay, come here—as well as more complex goals, such as bite inhibition and water safety. It shows how to avoid or correct typical behavior problems, including jumping, barking, and leash-pulling. Plus: how to make your dog comfortable in the world—a dog that knows how to behave in a vet’s office, is at ease around strangers, and more. In other words, the best dog ever.

After several days of exploring, Maggie discovers some favorite places and quickly falls into a familiar routine. She even makes friends with the birds and squirrels that inhabit the enclosed yard! Change can be difficult, but Maggie soon realizes that, with the love and support of her new family, she has become comfortable and content with her new surroundings. Download or read book My Old Dog written by Laura T. Coffey and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “No Dog Should Die Alone” was the attention-grabbing — and heart-stirring — headline of journalist Laura T. Coffey’s TODAY show website story about photographer Lori Fusaro’s work with senior shelter pets. While generally calm, easy, and already house-trained, these animals often represent the highest-risk population at shelters. With gorgeous, joyful photographs and sweet, funny, true tales of “old dogs learning new tricks,” Coffey and Fusaro show that adopting a senior can be even more rewarding than choosing a younger dog. You’ll meet endearing elders like Marnie, the irresistible shih tzu who has posed for selfies with Tina Fey, James Franco, and Betty White; Remy, a soulful nine-year-old dog adopted by elderly nuns; George Clooney’s cocker spaniel, Einstein; and Bretagne, the last known surviving search dog from Ground Zero. They may be slower moving and a tad less exuberant than puppies, but these pooches prove that adopting a senior brings immeasurable joy, earnest devotion, and unconditional love.

Download or read book The Jack Russell written by Michael Stonewood and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-04-12 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jack Russell is a small breed of dog that is a member of the Terrier typing. The Jack Russell is also commonly known by its initials, 'JRT,' or simply as a 'Jack.' The Jack Russell was originally developed for the purpose of hunting foxes. The breed was designed to be athletic enough to be able to chase and intimidate their quarry while also having an even unaggressive temperament, which keeps it from attacking the fox and effectively ending the hunt. Both the Jack Russell and the Fox Terrier descend from the same group of dogs owned by Reverend Jack Russell in 1795. Originally Jack Russell's with white coat colorations were favored due to the fact that there was a need to be able to distinguish between the dog and their prey. Due to the fact that the Jack Russell has a working background, the breed has hardly changed over the last 200 years. The breed still has a predominately white coat with black, brown or tan markings. The Jack Russell has three potential coat types: rough, smooth and broken (which is a combination of the rough and smooth coats). In modern times the breed is still commonly used for working purposes - however it is more commonly used for vermin control purposes rather than sporting/hunting purposes. The Jack Russell is commonly used to trap vermin, such as foxes and groundhogs, in their dens while their owners dig to the vermin. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Jack Russell. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Jack Russell with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Jack Russell is a highly intelligent, friendly and energetic breed. They make a good pet for households with an active lifestyle. It is important to note that the Jack Russell was developed for hunting purposes and therefore has a high prey drive. The Jack Russell will commonly pursue smaller animals, such as squirrels or cats, which can make it an unsuitable pet for household with multiple animals. It is also important to note that as a working breed, the Jack Russell has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Jack Russell has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Jack Russell's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Jack Russell, raising your Jack Russell from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between! "The Jack Russell: A Complete and Comprehensive Owners Guide to: Buying, Owning, Health, Grooming, Training, Obedience, Understanding and Caring for Your Jack Russell," by Michael Stonewood is the perfect purchase or gift for a first time Jack Russell owner. This guide includes sections on caring for a puppy, breeding, health care, training, the basic cost of owning a Jack Russell and much more. This book is the second edition - the first edition was published by 'Dog Care Professionals.'

Download or read book Remember Me written by Eileen Anderson and published by Dogwise Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remember Me? is an award-winning guidebook for owners of dogs who are losing their mental faculties as they age, and the story of a dog and owner who retained their bond through this most difficult situation. If you have an aging dog, Remember Me? will give you the information you need to weather the difficult condition and give your dog the most fulfilling life possible. In Remember Me, you will learn: • About the symptoms of canine cognitive dysfunction, medications and other interventions that are showing promise in treating the condition; • How to adapt your home and habits to keep your dog safe; • The many products available to solve the problems of senior dogs; • How to make things easier on yourself, physically and emotionally; and • The complex question of euthanasia and how to make your own decision about it. The story of author Eileen Anderson's small terrier Cricket, who developed dementia, is threaded through the book. As Cricket's dementia worsened she paced, she circled, she stood in corners, she forgot what she was doing, and at times she lost and found her owner repeatedly. For the last weeks of her life she even forgot how to drink water. As Cricket's condition deteriorated and needs changed, Anderson learned about the disease and developed methods to care for her dog. She shares these methods in Remember Me? and her calm, conversational tone is soothing to dog owners who are suffering--sometimes more than their dogs. Remember Me? won the 2016 Maxwell Award from the Dog Writers Association of America for a book on health, behavior, or general care.
