Book excerpt: The Itinerary of Archbishop Baldwin through Wales Ancient British Travel Guides Ancient Travel Books Top 100 Travel Books Giraldus Cambrensis - Gerald of Wales Translator - Sir Richard Colt Hoare Gerald of Wales (Latin: Giraldus Cambrensis; Welsh: Gerallt Gymro; c. 1146 - c. 1223) was archdeacon of Brecon and chronicler of his times. Born c. 1146 at Manorbier Castle in Pembrokeshire, Wales, he was of mixed Norman and Welsh des¢ he is also known as Gerald de Barri. Gerald became a royal clerk and chaplain to King Henry II of England in 1184, first acting mediator between the crown and Prince Rhys ap Gruffydd. He was chosen to accompany one of the king's sons, John, in 1185 on John's first expedition to Ireland. This was the catalyst for his literary career; his work Topographia Hibernica (first published 1188, and revised at least four more times) is an account of his journey to Irel∧ Gerald always referred to it as his Topography, though "History" is the more accurate term. He followed it up, shortly afterwards, with an account of Henry's conquest of Ireland, the Expugnatio Hibernica. Both works were revised and added to several times before his death, and display a notable degree of Latin learning, as well as a great deal of prejudice against a foreign people. Gerald was proud to be related to some of the Norman invaders of Ireland, such as his maternal uncle Robert Fitz-Stephen and Raymond FitzGerald, and his influential account, which portrays the Irish as barbaric savages, gives important insight into Anglo-Norman views of Ireland and the history of the invasion.

This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Itinerary of Archbishop Baldwin Through Wales, A. D. 1188, Vol. 2 The exclamation of Toxilus is obviously grounded upon a double meaning, assigned to the name of Lucris (quasi a lucro), from whence he takes occasion to prognosticate a good omen to the purchaser. How valuable is a name and an omen or how valu able is that name which carries its good 0mm with it! And the pander's reply plainly shews that he understood it in that light. A similar superstition still prevails in some parts of Italy, and in other places on the Continent. I mean, the custom of giving to infants, as their baptismal name, the name of the saint whose festival is the nearest to the birthday of the child; from which name, if it is capable of a fortunate or favour able translation, the good fortune or disposition of the child is inferred. This day is also, in all catholic countries, more honoured in the observance than the birthday. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
