Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Italian Poets The purpose of these volumes is, to add to the stock of tales from the Italian writers; to retain at the same time as much of the poetry of the originals as it is in the power of the writer's prose to compass; and to furnish careful biographical notices of the authors. There have been several collections of stories from the novelists of Italy, but none from the poets; and it struck me that prose versions from these, of the kind here offered to the public, might not be unwillingly received. The stories are selected from the five principal narrative poets, Dante, Pulci, Boiardo, Ariosto, and Tasso; they comprise the most popular of such as are fit for translation; are reduced into one continuous narrative, when diffused and interrupted, as in the instances of those of Angelica, and Armida; are accompanied with critical and explanatory notes; and, in the case of Dante, consist of an abstract of the poet's whole work. The volumes are furthermore interspersed with the most favourite morceaux of the originals, followed sometimes with attempts to versify them; and in the Appendix, for the better satisfaction of the student, are given entire stories, also in the original, and occasionally rendered in like manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the Italian Poets Histoire Litteraire, etc. It is written with his usual grace, Vivacity, and acuteness, and contains a good no tice Of the Tasso controversy. As to the Pisan edition Of the works, it is the completest, I believe, in point Of con tents, ever published, comprises all the controversial criticism, and is, Of course, very useful; but it contains no life except Manso's now known to be very inconclu sive), has got a heap O feeble variorum comments on the Jerusalem, no notes worth speaking Of to the rest of the works, and, notwithstanding the claim in the title page to the merit Of a better order, has lefi the cor respondence in a deplorable state Of irregularity, as well as totally without elucidation. It forms part of the great intellectual movement of which the most unmistakable signs were the French revolution, and its numerous brood of revolutions, Of the first, second, and third generations, throughout Europe but this poetry is unique in the history of litera ture for the unswerving singleness of its tendency. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Italian Poets, Vol. 1 of 3 The names of Carey, of Rose, and Wiffen, need but be mentioned to remind the English reader, that in transferring the works of the three' greatest poets of Italy into our mother tongue, translation has been carried to a degree of per fection scarcely in any instance before attained; while the name of Roscoe, so worthy in every respect of veneration, reminds us how much has been done in this country to make known the most important periods of Italian history. Nor is there any reason to fear that the literature which so many circumstances tend to make popular in this country, should at present lose any portion of its popularity. More than one of its most distin guished scholars have lived among us, employing their talents in facilitating its study; and in Dr. Panizzi, the judicious and accomplished Professor at the London University, we have'another in stance of the advantage a country reaps in be coming the sojourn of these learned and enlight ened strangers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the Italian Poets, Vol. 1 of 2: With Lives of the Writers The abstract of Dante, therefore, in these volumes (with every deprecation that becomes me of being sup posed to pretend to give a thorough idea of any poetry whatsoever, especially without its metrical form) aspires to be regarded as, at all events, not exhibiting a false idea of the Dantesque spirit in point of feeling and expression. It is true, I have omitted long tedious lec tures of scholastic divinity, and other learned absurdities of the time, which are among the bars to the poem's being read through, even in Italy (which Foscolo tells us is never the case) and I have compressed the work in other passages not essentially necessary to the forma tion of a just idea of the author. But quite enough re mains to suggest it to the intelligent; and in no instance have I made additions or alterations. There is warrant - I hope I may say letter - for every thing put down. It is probable that a prose translation would give a better idea of the genius and manner of this poet than any metrical one. Vol. I. P. 310. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems Translations: Including Dante's Vita Nuova the Early Italian PoetsThere is a pleasant tradition, not indeed susceptible of conclusive proof, but supported by a fair amount of indirect evidence, that Chaucer in 1373 met Petrarch at Padua. In any case, Troilus and Criseyde, the House of Fame, and the Canterbury Tales mark the beginning of the literary relations between England and Italy; relations which have continued, almost uninterruptedly, down to the present day, although naturally more close and intimate at some periods than at others. The poetry and prose of our early Tudor and Elizabethan age drew copious and noble inspiration from Italian sources; the poetry and prose of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century in Italy, the epoch that preceded and heralded the Risorgimento, exemplified in Monti and Manzoni, were considerably influenced by English models. Literature has been one of the many links in the chain of gold that has bound the two nations together; but, in this respect at least, England has received immeasurably more than she has given. The gift of the land of Dante to the land of Shakespeare culminated in the nineteenth century, when, in the children of her exiled poet and patriot, Gabriele Rossetti (who escaped from Naples in a British ship and settled in London in 1824), Italy gave us two great poets: Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) and Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830-1894); two great poets who, if mainly English in their art, were three-fourths Italian in blood. It is impossible to dissociate Dante Gabriel Rossetti in our thoughts from the supreme poet whose name he so worthily bore. He wrote of himself: "The first associations I have are connected with my father's devoted studies, which, from his own point of view, have done so much towards the general investigation of Dante's writings. Thus, in those early days, all around me partook of the influence of the great Florentine; till, from viewing it as a natural element, I also, growing older, was drawn within the circle."About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Forerunners of Dante

Download or read book The Forerunners of Dante written by Arthur John Butler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forerunners of Dante: A Selection From Italian Poetry Before 1300 Italy is unique among European countries in having twice seen its literature culminate, at epochs, indeed, far remote one from the other; and each time in a poet who by common consent holds rank among the four or five greatest among men of European speech. The older Italian, which we call Latin, and the later Latin, which we call Italian, must not be regarded as parent and child; they are the same individual at various stages of development, as Dante was well aware. Throughout the treatise on language and literature to which he gave the name of De Vulgari Eloque'rztz'éz, the word he uses to designate his own mother-tongue is Latino. The three chief 'romance' languages, as we now style them, are for him French, 'spanish' (including Provencal), and 'latin'; the vernacular of Italy is vzzégm'e latz'num. His instinct was quite right; he would have understood Virgil, in all probability, though he had never read another word of ancient Latin, while Virgil would have understood him, and recognized in his speech something very closely resembling what he had heard every day in the streets of Rome, or the country lanes round Mantua.
