Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Italian Navy in the World War 1915-1918: Facts and Figures When the European war broke out in August, 1914, the Italian Navy had in course of completion a programme which was com mensur'ate with the financial resources of the nation and framed within the limits of a policy that was devoid Of. Any aggressive or imperialistic character. The/ realisation of this programme would have enabled the italian fleet to maintain the proportions of to 1 with that Of France, and 4 to 3 with that of Austria. The outbreak of the conflict, however, arousing new and dangerous eventualities, caused a change in this programme in the quantitative sense; while, on the other hand, the revolution which was taking place in the methods Of naval warfare - a revolution which started practically at the beginning of hostilities and totally destroyed a whole body of naval traditions; necessarily had the effect Of modifying in the qualitative Sense the plans which would have enabled Italy to defend herself and take the offensive at sea. The losses which the British Navy suffered in the earliest days Of the-war from the work Of the German submarines the increasingly effective assistance of aircraft as a means of scouting and for bombing fortified places and ships; the daily growing employment of mines whether as a protection for ports and whole tracts of sea, or for laying insidious zones Of danger-all necessary to Observe the greatest caution i squadrons for Offensive operations. Book The Naval War in the Mediterranean

Download or read book The Naval War in the Mediterranean written by Paul G. Halpern and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, originally published in 1987, fills a gap in a neglected area. Looking at the entire war in the Mediterrean, the volume examines the war from the viewpoint of all the important participants, making full use of archives and manuscript collections in Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Austria and the United States. A fascinating mosaic of campaigns emerges in the Adriatic, Straits of Otranto and the Eastern Aegean. The German assistance to the tribes of Libya, the threat that Germany would get her hands on the Russian Black Sea Fleet and use it in the Mediterreanean, and the appearance and influence of the Americans in 1918 all took place against a background of rivalry between the Allies which frustrated the appointment of Jellicoe in 1918 as supreme command at sea in a role similar to that of Foch on land.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a complete guide to the Regia Marina, the navy with which Italy fought the Second World War. Starting with the historical background, it describes how the navy developed, how it was organised, the facilities that supported it, and the operations it conducted both before and after the armistice in 1943. It also details all its ships, with full technical particulars, plans and photos. Furthermore, there are chapters on special topics like camouflage; uniforms, decorations and insignia; and a 'who's who' of important naval personalities; and the reference value of the book is enhanced by a comprehensive bibliography and guide to sources. The illustration is a noteworthy feature of the book as the author's collection of naval photographs is one of the best in Italy. He is also a fine draughtsman, and his ship plans and colour illustrations are both detailed and accurate, adding a particular appeal for modelmakers. Of all the main combatant navies of this era, the Italian is probably the most poorly represented in English publications, so this comprehensive handbook will be especially welcomed by the naval history community.

Book Britain and Italy in the Era of the Great War

Download or read book Britain and Italy in the Era of the Great War written by Stefano Marcuzzi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an important reassessment of British and Italian grand strategies during the First World War. Stefano Marcuzzi sheds new light on a hitherto overlooked but central aspect of Britain and Italy's war experiences: the uneasy and only partial overlap between Britain's strategy for imperial defence and Italy's ambition for imperial expansion. Taking Anglo-Italian bilateral relations as a special lens through which to understand the workings of the Entente in World War I, he reveals how the ups-and-downs of that relationship influenced and shaped Allied grand strategy. Marcuzzi considers three main issues – war aims, war strategy and peace-making – and examines how, under the pressure of divergent interests and wartime events, the Anglo-Italian 'traditional friendship' turned increasingly into competition by the end of the war, casting a shadow on Anglo-Italian relations both at the Peace Conference and in the interwar period.
