Download or read book Mussolini s Navy written by Maurizio Brescia and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a complete guide to the Regia Marina, the navy with which Italy fought the Second World War. Starting with the historical background, it describes how the navy developed, how it was organised, the facilities that supported it, and the operations it conducted both before and after the armistice in 1943. It also details all its ships, with full technical particulars, plans and photos. Furthermore, there are chapters on special topics like camouflage; uniforms, decorations and insignia; and a 'who's who' of important naval personalities; and the reference value of the book is enhanced by a comprehensive bibliography and guide to sources. The illustration is a noteworthy feature of the book as the author's collection of naval photographs is one of the best in Italy. He is also a fine draughtsman, and his ship plans and colour illustrations are both detailed and accurate, adding a particular appeal for modelmakers. Of all the main combatant navies of this era, the Italian is probably the most poorly represented in English publications, so this comprehensive handbook will be especially welcomed by the naval history community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Italian Navy in the World War 1915-1918: Facts and Figures When the European war broke out in August, 1914, the Italian Navy had in course of completion a programme which was com mensur'ate with the financial resources of the nation and framed within the limits of a policy that was devoid Of. Any aggressive or imperialistic character. The/ realisation of this programme would have enabled the italian fleet to maintain the proportions of to 1 with that Of France, and 4 to 3 with that of Austria. The outbreak of the conflict, however, arousing new and dangerous eventualities, caused a change in this programme in the quantitative sense; while, on the other hand, the revolution which was taking place in the methods Of naval warfare - a revolution which started practically at the beginning of hostilities and totally destroyed a whole body of naval traditions; necessarily had the effect Of modifying in the qualitative Sense the plans which would have enabled Italy to defend herself and take the offensive at sea. The losses which the British Navy suffered in the earliest days Of the-war from the work Of the German submarines the increasingly effective assistance of aircraft as a means of scouting and for bombing fortified places and ships; the daily growing employment of mines whether as a protection for ports and whole tracts of sea, or for laying insidious zones Of danger-all necessary to Observe the greatest caution i squadrons for Offensive operations. Book The Italian Navy in World War II

Download or read book The Italian Navy in World War II written by James J. Sadkovich and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1994-04-27 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revisionist history convincingly argues that the Regia Marina Italiana (the Royal Italian Navy) has been neglected and maligned in assessments of its contributions to the Axis effort in World War II. After all, Italy was the major Axis player in the Mediterranean, and it was the Italian navy and air force, with only sporadic help from their German ally, that stymied the British navy and air force for most of the thirty-nine months that Italy was a belligerent. It was the Royal Italian Navy that provided the many convoys that kept the Axis war effort in Africa alive by repeatedly braving attack by aircraft, submarine, and surface vessels. If doomed by its own technical weaknesses and Ultra (the top-secret British decoding device), the Italian navy still fought a tenacious and gallant war; and if it did not win that war, it avoided defeat for thirty-nine, long, frustrating months.

Book excerpt: Europe ruled the waves for most of the modern era and even when its navies were eclipsed in size by the US force, they continued to dominate world wars. In this unique history of Europe's naval forces, Larry Sondhaus charts the development of naval warfare from the transition to steam to recent actions in the Persian Gulf. Combining detailed technical information with an in-depth comparison of warfare and tactics across some of the key conflicts of the modern world, this is an absorbing account of European and British seapower, past and present.
