Book Mid sized Manufacturing Companies The New Driver of Italian Competitiveness

Download or read book Mid sized Manufacturing Companies The New Driver of Italian Competitiveness written by Fulvio Coltorti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structure of Italian industry is characterized by a predominance of small sized companies and the presence of very few large companies. For a long time a conviction was shared among scholars and practitioners that the strength and safety of Italian industry were based on its industrial districts, that is, the system of interdependent and co-localized small companies which derive their competitive force from an effective and efficient division of labour. This book stresses the idea that a new, vital and promising phenomenon for the competitiveness of Italian industry is focused on mid-sized companies, and the systems of interconnected firms that form a constituent part of their business model. These companies, which originate largely from districts and other local production systems, are a strong entrepreneurial force complementing the districts that have characterized Italy and made Italian industry famous worldwide. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of these firms is provided in this book. Business models and strategies implemented by a number of successful Italian mid-sized manufacturing companies are also explored. Consequences in terms of management and industrial policies are provided. A final look at the German Mittelstand gives a useful comparison.

Book excerpt: After a quick profile of Italian foreign direct investments since 1900 and a short review of the main explanations of the lagged multinational growth by Italian manufacturing companies, a quick glimpse of business histories is given to the only two still today living "old protagonists" (Pirelli, Fiat) and to three old corporate groups (Olivetti, SNIA Viscosa, Montecatini-Montedison) who had also reached a significant degree of full internationalization early in the XX century, but during the second postwar period underwent profound dismantling of their original business mission. Finally the paper focuses on few cases of "new protagonists", mid-size family companies who undertook a true multinational strategy only in the most recent decades and today represent the core of the Italian "fourth capitalism"

Book Multinational Firms Innovation and Productivity

Download or read book Multinational Firms Innovation and Productivity written by D. Castellani and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book assumes an original place in the literature. . . Castellani and Zanfei show that the economic impact of MNEs on innovation and productivity depends on evolutionary features of firms and industries, particularly on the heterogeneity of firm strategies and behaviours. . . this volume contains high-quality, well-written research. . . Simona Iammarino, Research Policy . . . this book offers the reader a well-written and very comprehensive analysis on the link between innovation and internalization which leads to insights into firm heterogeneity. The authors have succeeded in synthesizing the vast body of theoretical and empirical research and given an up-to-date overview of the various issues involved. This is then complemented with their own research findings. . . The book will undoubtedly enrich the debate on the behavior and impact of MNEs. Yama Temouri, Journal of International Business Studies Davide Castellani and Antonello Zanfei, two well-known Italian economists, have brought forth an excellent new book. . . I think this book will serve as a starting-point for many interesting studies, both because of its findings and because of its empirical and theoretical rigour. . . the book lays an excellent and empirically well founded foundation that opens the way for what we need most in research on the international innovatory activities and R&D configurations of MNCs: intrafirm data and the study of intrafirm processes, configurations and specific interactions with the host country environment. The book to me is an important step in moving innovation research forward in this direction. . . I am sure that this book will serve as a thought-provoking starting point for many future studies on firms international innovatory activities and therefore recommend it without any reservation. Marcus M. Keupp, Creativity and Innovation Management Castellani and Zanfei have developed an original and comprehensive analysis of the role of multinational firms in the transfer, creation and diffusion of technology. By developing their view of the multinationals as double network institutions , the authors provide new insights on a variety of key issues at the frontier of economics of international production and innovation. This book is thought-provoking, incisive and topical, and should be required reading for both economists and policymakers alike. Rajneesh Narula, University of Reading, UK Castellani and Zanfei present an in-depth theoretical and empirical analysis of the key issues underpinning the relationship between innovation and multinationality. This book is strongly-recommended reading for any researcher working on innovation or multinationality or the interface between the two. Grazia Ietto-Gillies, London South Bank University, UK This book gets to the root of how and why multinational firms differ in the cross-border creation, transfer and diffusion of technology, and provides fresh evidence on the effects that these differences have on productivity and innovation in the economic systems in which they are active. Davide Castellani and Antonello Zanfei consider multinationals as heterogeneous institutions that combine internal networks of subsidiaries with external networks of collaborative linkages, to bridge different economic and innovation systems. They examine heterogeneity in productivity and innovative behaviour between multinational and national firms, as well as across and within multinationals. The authors argue that not every foreign firm is a good source of externality, and not every domestic firm is equally well placed to benefit from multinationals. It is shown that spillovers from multinationals differ according to the technological profiles, embeddedness and linkage creation of both foreign and domestic firms active in local markets. The book supports this view with empirical evidence based on illustrative case studies, and on econometric analysis using extensive firm-level datasets on multinati

Book Internationalization of Italian companies A cross cultural perspective

Download or read book Internationalization of Italian companies A cross cultural perspective written by Ivano Pini and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 70, , language: English, abstract: This research aims to analyse the influence of cultural dimensions on the internationalization of Italian firms. While there has been much research on international business and cultural aspects, few researchers have taken into consideration the peculiarities of the Italian culture and their influence on internationalization. To test the hypothesis that Italian firms are influenced by the cultural dimensions identified by the GLOBE study, by the cultural distance indexes, and, eventually, by specific economic indexes, we have selected two dependent variables that express the most relevant modes through which firms enter a foreign country, namely foreign direct investments and trades. Through an in-depth assessment of secondary data mainly available online, we have ranked the countries according to the foreign direct investment and trade performances. Results have been compared with cultural scores inferred from GLOBE and with competitiveness indexes devised by Schwab (2019), UNDP (2020), and IMD (2019). A cultural distance comparison based on differences between Italy and other countries has been made. The outcomes show the Italian industry’s systemic weakness derived from the current competitiveness reports and record significant cultural gaps in relation to the top performer countries. Italy’s low score in GLOBE’s dimensions like performance orientation, future orientation, individualism, and uncertainty avoidance together with relatively high power distance put the country quite far from the cultural scores exhibited by the top performers. The results prove undoubtedly that the weakness of Italian internationalization strategy requires a new set of reforms aiming to increase the competitiveness of the country, resolve the eternal dilemma between North and South, and educate the future managers propelling a new international mentality in place of the “parochial” one typically affecting Italian Small and Medium Enterprises.

Book The Italian Model of Management

Download or read book The Italian Model of Management written by Luigi Serio and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an essential resource for facilitators seeking to help students develop their knowledge of management practice in Italy. It presents a collection of the best case studies and accompanying teaching notes from the Italian Association for Management Development (ASFOR) competition in 2014. The cases are written by teachers across many of the members of ASFOR in Italy, leading business schools, corporate universities and academia. Knowledge gained by professionals often remains implicit and is rarely shared. By grouping together the award-winning case studies in this volume, readers can gain an important insight into how management is conducted in Italy. This collection shines a light on management practices across several industries. The Italian economy differs from others in that it is one in which small and family-run businesses dominate, and the relationship between the private sector and public life is unique. As a result, The Italian Model of Management provides the opportunity for students to enlarge the Anglo-Saxon model and perspective of management, and to offer cross-cultural learning experiences, based on the distinction of a “Made in Italy” competitive advantage. Each case provides an engaging story, plots the strategic development of the organization in question, and is supported by online teaching guidance and teaching notes.
