Book The Isotopic Ratio Measurement of Uranium in the Form of Hydrolyzed Uranium Hexafluoride by Inductively Coupled Plasma Multiple Collector Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book The Isotopic Ratio Measurement of Uranium in the Form of Hydrolyzed Uranium Hexafluoride by Inductively Coupled Plasma Multiple Collector Mass Spectrometry written by T. Hodgson and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inductively coupled plasma-multiple collector-mass spectrometer (ICP-MC-MS) has been used to measure the isotopic composition of uranium in three solutions of uranium hexafluoride. The 235U: 238U ratio of each sample solution ranged from approximately 0.007 to 0.03 to 1.0. The measurements are linear over this range and the precision and accuracy are comparable, if not superior, to that obtained by thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS). However, acceptable isotopic ratio measurement of uranium hexafluoride solutions is not possible by TIMS because the presence of fluoride ions severely limits analytical precision. Hence, the fluoride must be removed prior to analysis. This necessitates a chemical purification stage which adds both time and expense to the measurement process. This study reports direct, high precision, accurate uranium isotope ratio measurements on solutions of uranium hexafluoride. The instrumental time required for the analysis of 15 uranium samples with the ICP-MC-MS totals 135 min. This compares with an estimated time requirement of 600 min by TIMS and a time of 900 min by UF6 gas mass spectrometry.

Book Practical Guide to ICP MS

Download or read book Practical Guide to ICP MS written by Robert Thomas and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a field insider with over 20 years experience in product development, application support, and field marketing for an ICP-MS manufacturer, the third edition of Practical Guide to ICP-MS: A Tutorial for Beginners provides an updated reference that was written specifically with the novice in mind. It presents a compelling story about ICP-MS and what it has to offer, showing this powerful ultra trace-element technique in the way it was intended—a practical solution to real-world problems. New to the third edition: New chapter: Emerging ICP-MS Application Areas – covers the three most rapidly growing areas: analysis of flue gas desulfurization wastewaters, fully automated analysis of seawater samples using online chemistry procedures, and characterization of engineered nanoparticles Discussion of all the new technology commercialized since the second edition. An updated glossary of terms with more than 100 new entries Examination of nonstandard sampling accessories, which are important for enhancing the practical capabilities of ICP-MS Insight into additional applications in the environmental, clinical/biomedical, and food chemistry fields as well as new directives from the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) on determining impurities in pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements using Chapters 232, 233 and 2232 Description of the most important analytical factors for selecting an ICP-MS system, taking into consideration more recent application demands This reference describes the principles and application benefits of ICP-MS in a clear manner for laboratory managers, analytical chemists, and technicians who have limited knowledge of the technique. In addition, it offers much-needed guidance on how best to evaluate capabilities and compare with other trace element techniques when looking to purchase commercial ICP-MS instrumentation.

Book High Precisin and High Accuracy Isotopic Measurement of Uranium Using Lead and Thorium Calibration Solutions by Inductively Coupled Plasma Multiple Collector Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book High Precisin and High Accuracy Isotopic Measurement of Uranium Using Lead and Thorium Calibration Solutions by Inductively Coupled Plasma Multiple Collector Mass Spectrometry written by I. Bowen and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel method for the high accuracy and high precision measurement of uranium isotopic composition by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Multiple Collector-Mass Spectrometry is discussed. Uranium isotopic samples are spiked with either thorium or lead for use as internal calibration reference materials. This method eliminates the necessity to periodically measure uranium standards to correct for changing mass bias when samples are measured over long time periods. This technique has generated among the highest levels of analytical precision on both the major and minor isotopes of uranium. Sample throughput has also been demonstrated to exceed Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry by a factor of four to five.

Book Determination of Total and Isotopic Uranium by Inductively Coupled Plasma mass Spectrometry at the Fernald Environmental Management Project

Download or read book Determination of Total and Isotopic Uranium by Inductively Coupled Plasma mass Spectrometry at the Fernald Environmental Management Project written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Fernald Environmental Management Project (FEMP) in southwestern Ohio, ICP-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), with sample introduction by peristaltic pumping, is used to determine total and isotopic uranium (U-234, U-235, U-236 and U-238) in soil samples. These analyses are conducted in support of the environmental cleanup of the FEMP site. Various aspects of the sample preparation and instrumental analysis will be discussed. Initial sample preparation consists of oven drying to determine moisture content, and grinding and rolling to homogenize the sample. This is followed by a nitric/hydrofluoric acid digestion to bring the uranium in the sample into solution. Bismuth is added to the sample prior to digestion to monitor for losses. The total uranium (U-238) content of this solution and the U235/U238 ratio are measured on the first pass through the ICP-MS. To determine the concentration of the less abundant U234 and U236 isotopes, the digestate is further concentrated by using Eichrom TRU-Spec extraction columns before the second pass through the ICP-MS. Quality controls for both the sample preparation and instrumental protocols will also be discussed. Finally, an explanation of the calculations used to report the data in either weight percent or activity units will be given.
