It also tells how an island man adapts to his adopted homeland, America, and the frustrations, the worries, fears, concerns and a contrasting way of life compared to the one that he grew up with. It also expresses the authors feelings for his homeland as it struggles to find itself in the developing world. The poems also take a look globally at topics that cover life in general. Download or read book The Mantle of Struggle written by Irving Andre and published by Between the Lines. This book was released on 2023-11-03 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rosie Douglas, former prime minister of Dominica, had a life unlike any other modern politician. After leaving home to study agriculture in Canada, he became a member of the young Conservatives, under the Canadian prime minister’s guidance. However, after he moved to Montreal to study political science his politics started to shift. By the late sixties he was an active civil rights supporter and when Black students in Montreal began to protest racism in 1969, he helped lead the sit-in. He was identified as a protest ringleader after the peaceful protest turned into a police riot, and served 18 months in prison. After his deportation from Canada in 1976, having been named a danger to national security, Douglas participated in political movements around the world building global solidarity. He became a leader of the Libyan-based revolutionary group World Mathaba and supported Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress. Once back home in Dominica, he led the movement for Dominica’s full political independence from Great Britain, then served as a senator in the post-independence government, an MP, party leader, and finally prime minister. Relying on family sources, interviews, newspaper articles, government documents, and Douglas’ own articles, letters, and speeches, Irving Andre has drawn a rich and riveting record of this important Black revolutionary.

Download or read book Imdeduya written by Gunter Senft and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents five variants of the Imdeduya myth: two versions of the actual myth, a short story, a song and John Kasaipwalova’s English poem “Sail the Midnight Sun”. This poem draws heavily on the Trobriand myth which introduces the protagonists Imdeduya and Yolina and reports on Yolina’s intention to marry the girl so famous for her beauty, on his long journey to Imdeduya’s village and on their tragic love story. The texts are compared with each other with a final focus on the clash between orality and scripturality. Contrary to Kasaipwalova’s fixed poetic text, the oral Imdeduya versions reveal the variability characteristic for oral tradition. This variability opens up questions about traditional stability and destabilization of oral literature, especially questions about the changing role of myth – and magic – in the Trobriand Islanders' society which gets more and more integrated into the by now “literal” nation of Papua New Guinea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stevenson hoped that this story would please young people. It was, he explained, a story of sailors, storms and adventures, heat and cold, sailing-ships, islands, pirates and buried gold - all told in the old way. It is the story of the bloodthirsty and hard-hearted Captain Flint who, on his deathbed in 1754, drew the map of an island where he had buried his treasure - seven hundred thousand pounds in silver and gold. Young Jim Hawkins is living with his father and mother when he meets the mysterious old seaman Billy Bones - the man who holds Flints map of Treasure Island. Jim is drawn into a series of bloody adventures, which cost the lives of seventeen men and more and involve the evil old seaman Pew, Squire Trelawney, Dr Livesey, poor Ben Gunn, and the one-legged, two-faced Long John Silver, whose green talking parrot knows more than it should when it echoes the treasure-cry of Captain Flint: Pieces of eight! Pieces of eight! Easy Readers are adapted and abridged versions of novels and short stories. They are divided into level A, B, C, and D, A being the easiest.
