Book The Mafia at Apalachin 1957

Download or read book The Mafia at Apalachin 1957 written by Michael Newton and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 14, 1957, state troopers raided an estate in Apalachin, New York, and arrested 59 affluent men, with nearly as many more escaping through the surrounding woods. The next morning's headlines hailed the gathering as a summit meeting of organized crime, alerting America to the reality of a national Mafia whose existence had been hotly debated. This first in-depth study of that historic meeting chronicles how it changed the course of American history by inspiring federal legislation to crack down on labor racketeering; forcing drastic policy revisions within the U.S. Department of Justice; and prompting charges of criminal fraud in one of America's most heatedly contested presidential elections. By explaining the context and consequences of the raid, this volume establishes the gathering at Apalachin as a pivotal event in the history of syndicated crime and of the government's response to the Mafia.

Book excerpt: Paper dolls might seem the height of simplicity--quaint but simple toys, nothing more. But through the centuries paper figures have reflected religious and political beliefs, notions of womanhood, motherhood and family, the dictates of fashion, approaches to education, individual self-image and self-esteem, and ideas about death. This book examines paper dolls and their symbolism--from icons made by priests in ancient China to printable Kim Kardashians on the Internet--to show how these ephemeral objects have an enduring and sometimes surprising presence in history and culture.

Book Schizophrenia Is a Misdiagnosis

Download or read book Schizophrenia Is a Misdiagnosis written by C. Raymond Lake and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schizophrenia is the most widely known and feared mental illness worldwide, yet a rapidly growing literature from a broad spectrum of basic and clinical disciplines, especially epidemiology and molecular genetics, suggests that schizophrenia is the same condition as a psychotic bipolar disorder and does not exist as a separate disease. The goal is to document and interpret these data to justify eliminating the diagnosis of schizophrenia from the nomenclature. The author reviews the changing diagnostic concepts of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder with a historical perspective to clarify how the current conflict over explanations for psychosis has arisen. That two disorders, schizophrenia and bipolar, known as the Kraepelinian dichotomy, account for the functional psychoses has been a cornerstone of Psychiatry for over 100 years, but is questioned because of substantial similarities and overlap between these two disorders. Literature in the field demonstrates that psychotic patients are frequently misdiagnosed as suffering from the disease called schizophrenia when they suffer from a psychotic mood disorder. Such patients, their families, and their caretakers suffer significant disadvantages from the misdiagnosis. Psychotic patients misdiagnosed with schizophrenia receive substandard care regarding their medications, thus allowing their bipolar conditions to worsen. Other adverse effects are substantial and will be included. Liability for medical malpractice is of critical importance for the mental health professionals who make the majority of the diagnoses of schizophrenia. The concept put forward in this work will have a discipline-altering impact.

Book God s Quantum Vortex

Download or read book God s Quantum Vortex written by Jim Walker and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story evolves from the personal experiences of the writer, from his deep (forty years) research and discoveries of quantum cone vortex. Once into awareness, he reveals the techniques of connecting and triggering the act of God events. He formulates the mysteries of self-fate programming. He explains how the government, religion, finance, and science are interconnected for the first time in history. His research deep dives into the Bible, yoga meditation, wave-particle quantum physics, and into occult, the metaphysics. He is not just theorizing about life events; he is proactively changing the events in biblical proportions. He becomes the miracle creator by thought and by action, the trigger man, who can only relate to the higher dimensions and to cosmic intelligence. The formulas he writes may seem similar to previous theoretical physicists, but they are his own concept, given the examples of his work and e-mail prior to the God's Particle/Boson announcement by Peter Higgs on July 4, 2012. The quantum cone vortex diagram and its connection to yin and yang with annihilation and creation, related to cosmic spiral sequence of four sixes, may seem absurd to earths fourth-dimensional thinkers, but it is backed by facts by the author. His prediction of the next flood is backed by errors in time measured by Mayans and Nostradamus. Once a person is elevated to the vortex in quantum cone with zero weight / gravity and when time stops in quantum reality, then he/she will able to be awarded with all possibilities to create or destroy. The writer imitates the out-of-the-box thinking of God, but he is not comparing himself to cosmic intelligence. He just uses the quantum energy (in form of dark and light energyhe calls them Satan and God, respectively, for convenience). The examples are powerful and convincing. The reader should not just observe the authors human encounters to get to quick conclusions. It is a manual of how to think without fear. Once the fear is eliminated, the mind is open to deep into subconsciousness and to build the awareness, where all possibilities are unrestricted, and to rise to the sixth cosmic dimension, God.

Book What Wouldn t Jesus Do

Download or read book What Wouldn t Jesus Do written by Bernie Bernwall and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Christendom' has taken on the role of being the moral monitor for America and has failed miserably. And why has it failed? Because the church's role never was meant to be as a thermometer of righteousness, taking the country's temperature and then sitting back and not offering a helpful remedy. The church was meant to give a dose of love to a sick nation... In What Wouldn't Jesus Do, Carlton Bernwall challenges his fellow Christians to take a cold, hard look at their country and how they choose to address the world. He argues that since Roe vs. Wade, America has gradually lost its once unchallenged presence in the world as a leader. Its moral fiber based on a supposed Judeo-Christian foundation is cracked. Not only is the future of this country being questioned, but its forefathers would be livid about the state of this contemporary union. What Wouldn't Jesus Do maintains that the group most responsible for this atmosphere of collapse could be the very people who declare this a holy nation: Christians. What has Christianity done to fail America? What can the body of Christ do to overcome the most saddening times in the history of this country? More importantly, Carlton Bernwall asks: What wouldn't Jesus have done that the 'Christians' have?

Download or read book American Mafia written by Thomas Reppetto and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Reppetto's book earns its place among the best . . . he brings fresh context to a familiar story worth retelling." —The New York Times Book Review Organized crime—the Italian American kind—has long been a source of popular entertainment and legend. Now Thomas Reppetto provides a balanced history of the Mafia's rise—from the 1880s to the post-WWII era—that is as exciting and readable as it is authoritative. Structuring his narrative around a series of case histories featuring such infamous characters as Lucky Luciano and Al Capone, Reppetto draws on a lifetime of field experience and access to unseen documents to show us a locally grown Mafia. It wasn't until the 1920s, thanks to Prohibition, that the Mafia assumed what we now consider its defining characteristics, especially its octopuslike tendency to infiltrate industry and government. At mid-century the Kefauver Commission declared the Mafia synonymous with Union Siciliana; in the 1960s the FBI finally admitted the Mafia's existence under the name La Cosa Nostra. American Mafia is a fascinating look at America's most compelling criminal subculture from an author who is intimately acquainted with both sides of the street.
