Book The Iroquois Trail Foot Prints Six Nations

Download or read book The Iroquois Trail Foot Prints Six Nations written by W. M. Beauchamp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iroquois Trail, Foot-Prints, Six Nations: Customs, Traditions, and History The four hundredth year of European-American history will be marked by many publications recalling early days, and among these the present volume may find a proper place. Cusick's history has been largely quoted in recent years, with too much deference to its authority, but has become so scarce that a reissue seemed desirable. At the same time it seemed well to add a few explanatory notes, out of a vast number collected. The work has been done under some difficulties of arrangement and proof reading, but the important errors have been noted in the list of errata. The author may add that he has long been engaged in antiquarian work relating to the Iroquois and other early inhabitants of New York, and has enjoyed the advantage of long personal acquaintance with the Onondagas. His extended field work, and collation of authorities, has led him to differ from some conclusions of others. Book The Limits of Multiculturalism

Download or read book The Limits of Multiculturalism written by and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century, the profession of American anthropology emerged as European Americans James Fenimore Cooper and Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, among others, began to make a living by studying the "Indian." Less well known are the AmerIndians who, at that time, were writing and publishing ethnographic accounts of their own people. By bringing to the fore this literature of autoethnography and revealing its role in the forming of anthropology as we know it, this book searches out -- and shakes -- the foundations of American cultural studies. Scott Michaelsen shows cultural criticism to be at an impasse, trapped by tradition even in its attempts to get beyond tradition. With this dilemma in mind, he takes us back to anthropology's nineteenth-century roots to show us a network of nearly unknown AmerIndian anthropological writers -- David Cusick, Jane Johnston, William Apess, Ely S. Parker, Peter Jones, George Copway, and John Rollin Ridge -- working contemporaneously with the major white anthropologists who wrote on indian topics. Michaelsen tests present-day theses about difference in light of these AmerIndian voices and concludes that multiculturalism never will locate critical differences from Western or white writing, since these traditions are inextricably bound together. The Limits of Multiculturalism is a first step in finding the proper anthropological grounds for questions about cultures in the Americas, and in coming to terms with the co-invention of anthropology by AmerIndians -- with the fact that Indian voices are lodged at the heart of anthropology.

Book Inscribing Sovereignties

Download or read book Inscribing Sovereignties written by Phillip H. Round and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-10-08 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before European settlers arrived in North America, more than 300 distinct languages were being spoken among the continent's Indigenous peoples. But the Euro-American emphasis on alphabetic literacy has historically hidden the power and influence of Indigenous verbal and nonverbal language diversity on encounters between Indigenous North Americans and settlers. In this pathbreaking work, Phillip H. Round reveals how Native North Americans sparked a communications revolution in their adaptation and resistance to settlers' modes of speaking and writing. Round especially focuses on communication through inscription—the physical act of making a mark, the tools involved, and the social and cultural processes that render the mark legible. Using methods from history, literary studies, media studies, linguistics, and material culture studies, Round shows how Indigenous graphic practices embodied Native epistemologies while fostering linguistic innovation. Round's broad theory of graphogenesis—creating meaningful inscription—leads to new insights for both the past and present of Indigenous expression in a range of forms. Readers will find powerful new insights into Indigenous languages and linguistic practices, with important implications not just for scholars but for those working to support ongoing Native American self-determination.
