The narrative fairly illustrates the Photograph, taken from a picture which, as you know, I value very much and which you all admire, called the iron vvorker, painted for me four or five years ago by Christian Schuessele. The story from which the picture is painted will be found at page 41 of the Ap pendix, in which will also be found another version of the story of The Blacksmith and King Solomon, fur nished to me by my friend, Mr. Charles G. Leland, who wrote the verses at the close of the book. I am indebted to Mrs. Sarah J. Hale for a corrected copy of her beauti ful poem called iron, printed in the Appendix.
