Download or read book The Iris 1905 Vol 8 Classic Reprint written by University Of Buffalo and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iris, 1905, Vol. 8 Last summer the project for developing an arts department took definite form. Dr. Matthew D. Mann labored untiringly to this end, corresponding with many men to secure a suitable chancellor who would unite the several departments of the university under one head. The matter was then placed In the hands Ofa.sub -com mittee of the council, consisting of Dr. Roswell Park as chairman, with Dr. Mann, Mr. Henry R. Howland, Mr. John Lord O' Brian, and Mr. Adelbert Moot. Just at that time, through the generosity of a gentleman In another city, a chair of English literature was founded as a nucleus to the movement, the Y. M. C. A. Offered their commodious rooms for classes, the local press gave the project publicity, the'edu cators of the city were interested and pledged their support, and lectures on the British writers of the nineteenth century have been delivered to a large and enthusias tic class drawn from teachers and students generally throughout the city. The examination at the close of the fall term showed that most creditable work had been done, and that there is a real demand among our citizens for such knowledge. The services of Mr. Harlow C. Curtiss, Mr. Lewis Stockton, and Mr. Herbert Bissell were invited in American History, Popular Government and German Literature It is certain that if a degree could be offered to students by the university there would be a very large attendance. Evening popular lectures have crowded the large auditorium at the Y. M. C. A., revealing the widespread interest on the part of the public. There are hundreds among us who have been denied the advantages of a classical training, and these are hungry for all such opportunities of culture and information. Buffalo is sometimes satirized as lacking in intellectual and artistic aim and taste, but th experiment of the university this year proves this assumption untrue. Given a complete university here and none in the land would grow faster or with more enthusiasm. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “It was surprising what old experiences remembered could do to a presumably educated, civilized man.” And Hugh Denismore, a young doctor driving his mother’s Cadillac from Los Angeles to Phoenix, is eminently educated and civilized. He is privileged, would seem to have the world at his feet, even. Then why does the sight of a few redneck teenagers disconcert him? Why is he reluctant to pick up a disheveled girl hitchhiking along the desert highway? And why is he the first person the police suspect when she is found dead in Arizona a few days later? Dorothy B. Hughes ranks with Raymond Chandler and Patricia Highsmith as a master of mid-century noir. In books like In a Lonely Place and Ride the Pink Horse she exposed a seething discontent underneath the veneer of twentieth-century prosperity. With The Expendable Man, first published in 1963, Hughes upends the conventions of the wrong-man narrative to deliver a story that engages readers even as it implicates them in the greatest of all American crimes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Open Court, Vol. 18: A Monthly Magazine Devoted to the Science of Religion, the Religion of Science, and the Extension of the Religions Parliament Idea; January, 1904 HE japanese are a nature-loving people and frequently give practical expression to their feelings by taking a holiday simply for ower-viewing. At the proper season, the entire nation, so to speak, takes a day off and turns out on a big picnic, to see the plum blossoms, or the cherry blossoms, or the maples, or the crysanthemums. No utilitarian Views of the value of time or miserly conceptions of the expense of such outings prevail for a moment; for the Japanese are worshippers of beauty rather than of the almighty dollar. A few pennies on such occasions bring many pleasures, and business interests are sacrificed at the shrine of beauty. And, as one or more owers are blooming every month, there is almost a continuous round of such picnics during the year. Having lived in Japan for some time, it is my purpose, therefore, to tell my American countrymen something of the ower or owers popular each month, with some folk-lore, poems, or other descrip tion thereof and have it illustrated by pictures. But first we must call attention to the fact, that the Japanese word kana includes, not only a ower or blossom according to our conceptions, but also twigs, leaves, grasses, that the pine, the maple, and even the snow may come in this category. We are confronted at the very outset with a Chronological diffi culty in presenting this subject to Western readers. For the pro gramme of Japanese oral festivals was originally arranged on the basis of the old lunar calendar, so long in vogue in Japan. By that calendar the New Year came in about the net of January to the 18th of February; so that it was from three to seven weeks behind the Occidental solar calendar. For instance, the following is a oral programme according to the old style. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
