Book The IOS Study of Elementary School Teachers Perceptions of Their Classroom Relationships

Download or read book The IOS Study of Elementary School Teachers Perceptions of Their Classroom Relationships written by Melissa Ann Newberry and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Personal relationships between the teacher and student have been shown to influence many things from cognitive development to academic achievement to the social intelligence of the child. Teachers too, have psychological and social needs that they unconsciously seek to satisfy through the relationships in the classroom. This fulfillment comes as they interact and create relationships with select students in the classroom. Through this study it was found that the combination of personal constructs of close relationships based on what teachers value in the classroom and teacher preferences to student attitudes and behaviors influenced the way that teachers treat various groups of students. It was also revealed that without a method or opportunity for reflection, in many instances teachers are unaware of their affective role and its influence on the student. A protocol designed to facilitate the discussion of classroom relationships and encourage teachers to reflect on their classroom interactions proved useful and is offered as a tool for use in classrooms and future teacher preparation programs.

Book Teachers Building Trusting Relationships with Students in Elementary Schools and the Principals Who Support Them

Download or read book Teachers Building Trusting Relationships with Students in Elementary Schools and the Principals Who Support Them written by Lindsay N. Kidd and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trusting relationships between teachers and students is a cornerstone of success in the classroom. As a means for continuous professional growth, teachers should have an understanding of other teachers' positive experiences with and accessible strategies for how to build these relationships. Current research is missing the narrative voices of elementary general education teachers in the discussion on trust in the classroom. In addition to how they can achieve trusting relationships, teachers need support from their principals. This study provides a phenomenological analysis of teachers' perceptions of their responsibilities and actions that led to trusting relationships with students and the ways their principals have supported or interfered with their efforts. Three principals selected three teachers each to participate in the study for a total of 12 educators. Each of the participants agreed to one interview designed to address the five facets of trust: benevolence, honesty, openness, reliability, and competence. The interviews were coded to identify additional themes beyond the facets and strategies that support the development of each facet within the themes. Each participant addressed all five facets. Recommendations are presented for policy and practice in the areas of benevolence, openness, and reliability, the three facets that participants addressed most predominately in the interviews, while various forms of communication were the most commonly cited strategies for achieving trusting relationships. Readers will gain access to the heart of teachers' efforts and how principals support these teachers in fostering high trust relationships with their students. This study helps fill the gap in research and supports teachers with building trusting relationships with students.

Book Teachers perceptions of student teacher relationships among students with emotional disabilities in inclusive and self contained settings

Download or read book Teachers perceptions of student teacher relationships among students with emotional disabilities in inclusive and self contained settings written by Gooding Erika and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation explores the perceptions of student–teacher relationships among students with emotional disabilities held by general and special education teachers in inclusive and self-contained settings. This research explores how teacher groups perceive these student–teacher relationships within both learning environments and to what extent differences between these settings influence this perception. The theoretical framework for this non-experimental quantitative research is based on Albert Bandura’s social cognitive theory. Quantitative data for this study was collected through an 18-question survey developed by this researcher and administered to 87 voluntarily participating teachers of students with emotional disabilities in self-contained and inclusive educational settings. When analyzing this data, linear regression models were completed to determine if factors such as group size, adult-to-student ratio, and access to supports such as social skills instruction and positive behavior interventions influenced teachers’ perceptions of relationships. Further, independent sample t-tests were completed to compare the responses of teacher groups. This study’s results suggested no significant difference between general and special educators’ perceptions of relationships, regardless of whether they taught in an inclusive or self-contained setting. Additionally, no significant difference was noted in the perceptions held by special educators in either learning environment. Factors such as group size, student-to-teacher ratio, access to social skills instruction and positive behavior support were weak and non-significant predictors of relationship perceptions held by educators. This study intends to provide information to teachers, schools, and local education agencies to support inclusive educational practices and classroom relationship-building.

Download or read book Teacher student Relationship Quality and Student Relatedness and Engagement in Elementary School written by Kathleen Marie Zadzora and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Childrens early classroom experiences are important to understanding their trajectory of school achievement. One important facet of such classroom experiences is childrens relationship with their teacher. This paper applies Skinner and colleagues (2008) self-system model of motivational development (context self action) in a sample of elementary school students (1st, 3rd, and 5th grade; N = 1,404, 49.9% girls) and teachers (N = 76; 17% male) in the northeastern and midwestern U.S. Early-year peer perceptions of teacher-student relationship quality (context)but not teachers own reports of relationship qualitywere associated with teachers perception of student academic effort (action) over the course of the school year, but this association was not mediated by students own perceptions of their closeness with their teacher (self). Implications for education research and future directions are discussed.

Download or read book Teacher Perceptions of Teacher student Relationships on Student Academics and Student Behavior in Pre K 6th Grade written by Senetra Johnson-Jordan and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed method-correlational study was to examine how teacher-student relationships affect a student’s school career. There are numerous research studies that notes the impact of teacher-student relationships. However, this study gives insight to how the teacher perceives their relationship with their student, how it affects the student’s academics, and how it relates to the student’s behavior. Findings showed the teacher’s perception impacted the student’s performances academically. When the teacher determined the student had challenging behaviors, the student scored lower in math and reading, displaying direct and/or indirect relationships, between the variables. However, teachers perceived their relationship with the student to be ideal, yet their behavior was either somewhat challenging or completely challenging.
