Book excerpt: The community of Christ has a great tradition of invitation. Inviting others to faith requires leaning in to your own story, overcoming fear, and stepping out. But the good news is for everyone, always. And you can help keep it going. Using Scripture and story, Steve Carter casts a vision for non-threatening conversations that point people to Christ. Most significantly, Steve shows that only through risking it all will we discover what God is truly like.
Download or read book Invitational Intervention written by Judith Landau and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2006 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intervention is the action taken by family, friends, and concerned others to actively assist someone to change an unacceptable behavior. Invitational Intervention: ARISE, is a three-level method designed to work with families and friends to get a resistant substance abusing loved one started in treatment. In addition to working with substance abuse, Invitational Intervention addresses other problem areas such as eating disorders, Internet addiction, sexual addiction, compulsive gambling, medical treatment non-compliance, and nicotine dependence. Invitational Intervention encourages concerned other members of the support system to pick up the telephone and reach out to a trained ARISE Interventionist for guidance in achieving successful treatment engagement. A NIDA-funded ARISE study resulted in 83% successful treatment engagement with an average of less than 90 minutes of professional time expended because the majority of the effort was undertaken by the substance abuser's concerned others and support system. This book provides a practical step-by-step guide for clinicians who are interested in learning about Invitational Intervention and the ARISE method.
Download or read book Becoming an Invitational Leader written by William Watson Purkey and published by Humanix Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invitational Leadership is a fresh and innovative model based on a single theoretical framework. The model shifts from emphasizing control and dominance to one that focuses on connectedness, cooperation, and communication. Based on sound philosophical and psychological assumptions, Invitational Leadership has been tested and successfully applied by leaders in numerous fields, including administration, business, nursing, dentistry, counseling, and other professions. Invitational Leadership is the basis for the International Alliance for Invitational Education, a network of over a thousand professionals from all 50 states as well as Great Britain, Canada, China, South Africa, and countries throughout Central and South America. William Purkey and Betty Siegel have written much more than a guidebook to becoming a healthier and more effective leader; they proffer a radically profound, compelling argument that it is time for people in positions of authority to forge a new kind of relationship with others based on dialogue, respect and collaboration. This insightful work is long overdue in an age of “might makes right,” and contains great wisdom in promoting solid values found in various democratic and spiritual organizations. Supervisors and coaches, CEO’s and shop stewards, managers and parents—anyone and everyone who deals with others, take notice. This is a truly inspirational book in its invitation for all people to join together in a shared vision of promise and greatness.

Book excerpt: “A complete success…action fans and PBS types can share their enthusiasm” (Booklist, starred review) when a young Queen Elizabeth I is thrust into a gripping game of deception and lust at the height of the Ottoman Empire in this edge-of-your-seat historical thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Great Zoo of China and Temple. The year is 1546, and Suleiman the Magnificent, the feared Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, issues an invitation to every king in Europe: You are invited to send your finest player to compete in a chess tournament to determine the champion of the known world. Thousands converge on Constantinople, including the English court’s champion and his guide, the esteemed scholar Roger Ascham. Seeing a chance to enlighten the mind of a student, Ascham brings along Elizabeth Tudor, a brilliant young woman not yet consumed by royal duties in Henry VIII’s court. Yet on the opening night of the tournament, a powerful guest of the Sultan is murdered. Soon, barbaric deaths, diplomatic corruption, and unimaginable depravity—sexual and otherwise—unfold before Elizabeth’s and Ascham’s eyes. The pair soon realizes that the real chess game is being played within the court itself…and its most treacherous element is that a stranger in a strange land is only as safe as her host is gracious.
Download or read book Inviting Understanding written by Sonja K. Foss and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inviting Understanding: A Portrait of Invitational Rhetoric is an authoritative reference work designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the theory of invitational rhetoric, developed twenty-five years ago by Sonja K. Foss and Cindy L. Griffin. This theory challenges the conventional conception of rhetoric as persuasion and defines rhetoric as an invitation to understanding as a means to create a relationship rooted in equality, immanent value, and self-determination. Rather than celebrating argumentation, division, and winning, invitational rhetoric encourages rhetors to listen across differences, to engage in dialogue, and to try to understand positions different from their own. Organized into the three categories of foundations, extensions, and applications, Inviting Understanding is a compilation of published articles and new essays that explore and expand the theory. The book provides readers with access to a wide range of resources about this revolutionary theory in areas such as community organizing, social justice activism, social media, film, graffiti, institutional and team decision-making, communication and composition pedagogy, and interview protocols.

Book excerpt: In North America's Last Frontier, there are still untrammeled wildernesses where a man can stand alone in a region the size of entire states, where deep cold quiets every whisper of life and vast emptiness reigns. Alaska remains a mysterious place that, thanks to reality television, has captured the imagination of millions. Yet a minuscule fraction have acquired an understanding of the land afforded by exploring in their most vulnerable state -- on foot, towing all of their supplies, wholly independent. This is the perspective of Tim Hewitt, an employment lawyer from Pennsylvania with a unique hobby -- racing across Alaska on the Iditarod Trail. What compels a man to run, walk, and trudge a thousand miles across Alaska? "Because it's there" isn't an adequate explanation. "As a challenge" or "for the adventure of it" are closer, but still too vague. The thousand-mile dog sled race on the Iditarod Trail is often called "The Last Great Race" -- but there's another, more obscure race, where participants don't even have the help of dogs. The Iditarod Trail Invitational challenges cyclists, skiers, and runners to complete the distance under their own power and without much outside support. Tim Hewitt is the only person to have completed it more than three times. His actual number? An astonishing eight. Six of those, he won or tied. But no one who sees Tim Hewitt on the street near his law firm in Pittsburgh would ever suspect that battling hurricane-force blizzards is something he does in his spare time. Fifty-nine years old with a slim build, a bright smile, and cropped gray hair, he isn't the stereotype of a grizzled Arctic explorer. He's a talented amateur runner, a father to four daughters, a husband to an equally adventurous wife, and achiever of a truly distinctive accomplishment. Far more people have reached the summit of Mount Everest than Nome under their own power, and it's incredibly unlikely that another person will ever try for eight."8,000 Miles Across Alaska: A Runner's Journeys on the Iditarod Trail" chronicles Tim Hewitt's adventures crossing the stark wilderness of Alaska in the depth of winter -- the harrowing weather conditions, breathtaking scenery, kindness of strangers, humorous misadventures, humbling setbacks and heroic victories. From fierce competition with his fellow racers, to traveling backward on the trail to ensure the safety of his wife, to battling for his own survival, Tim Hewitt has amassed a lifetime of experiences amid the harsh miles of the Iditarod Trail. This is his story.
