Book excerpt: "THE WORLD'S RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS have offered answers to the weightiest questions of human existence, contributed to the formation of political and social institutions, inspired masterpieces of art and literature, and provided many of the cultural values and ideals on which entire civilizations have been based. Today, religions continue to play a powerful role in shaping the ways in which people understand themselves, the world they live in, and how they should live. Invitation to World Religions welcomes students to the study of religion. In these pages, we open the doors and invite the reader to explore with wonder and respect. We describe the essential features of the world's major religions and show how they have responded to basic human needs and to the cultural settings in which they developed. We also compare the answers religions have offered us regarding some of the most essential human questions: Why are we here? What is the nature of the universe? How should we live? Our aim has been to balance concision and substance in an introductory text that is accessible, as well as challenging"--
Download or read book The Invitation written by Lucy Foley and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the New York Times bestsellers The Paris Apartment and The Guest List, an evocative love story set along the Italian Riviera about a group of charismatic stars who all have secrets and pasts they try desperately — and dangerously — to hide. Rome, 1953: Hal, an itinerant journalist flailing in the post-war darkness, has come to the Eternal City to lose himself and to seek absolution for the thing that haunts him. One evening he finds himself on the steps of a palazzo, walking into a world of privilege and light. Here, on a rooftop above the city, he meets the mysterious Stella. Hal and Stella are from different worlds, but their connection is magnetic. Together, they escape the crowded party and imagine a different life, even if it's just for a night. Yet Stella vanishes all too quickly, and Hal is certain their paths won't cross again. But a year later they are unexpectedly thrown together, after Hal receives an invitation he cannot resist. An Italian Contessa asks him to assist on a trip of a lifetime -- acting as a reporter on a tremendous yacht, skimming its way along the Italian coast toward Cannes film festival, the most famous artists and movie stars of the day gathered to promote a new film. Of all the luminaries aboard — an Italian ingénue, an American star, a reclusive director — only one holds Hal in thrall: Stella. And while each has a past that belies the gilded surface, Stella has the most to hide. As Hal's obsession with Stella grows, he becomes determined to bring back the girl she once was, the girl who's been confined to history. An irresistibly entertaining and atmospheric novel set in some of the world's most glamorous locales, The Invitation is a sultry love story about the ways in which the secrets of the past stay with us — no matter how much we try to escape them.

Download or read book The Invitation written by Sixto Pas and published by 1st World Publishing. This book was released on 2002-10-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974, a group of teenage Peruvians became part of a facinating journey through the remote mystical places of Peru. Through the narrative of Sixto Paz Wells, the reader is confronted with one of the most complex cases of ET contact ever documented. A rare case which has astounded journalists, from nearly every country, as they defiantly witnessed the undeniable physical presence of an advanced civilization. The invitation stands as a document so provocative and upsetting to our routine lives, that the author's work has been surpresssed by organized agencies trying to destroy it. The question is : Why? Its pages are filled with the messages of hope, renewal and self-actualization. The humility of the author's revelations gives us the powerful tool to understand the great glory of being human. It complels us to share that unique glory with our brothers and sisters from beyond our planet and perhaps beyond time and space as we know it. After THE INVITATION, you will never see the world the same way.
Download or read book Children s Literature written by Diana Mitchell and published by Allyn & Bacon. This book was released on 2002 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children's Literature: An Invitation to the World is written and organized in a manner that engages the readers and that will instill confidence in teachers when selecting and using literature in their teaching. Readers are asked to take a world view of literature-what it is; how to recognize one's own; how to recognize an author's-and encouraged to see children's literature through a lens that includes people not like themselves. The book tackles tough issues such as gender and racial bias and how they can be insidiously promoted in literature. No other book on the market engages readers more than this one. Rather than just presenting topics, the book asks "What can we learn from them?" In addition, the first-person narrative involves readers in the discussion, rather than simply presenting content to them. Elementary and middle school teachers, curriculum developers and anyone interested in children's literature.

Download or read book The Invitation written by Richard R. Osmer and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving beyond conversionism Many Christians today are uncomfortable with older, simpler notions about evangelism as conversionism but see as insufficient the more progressive model of evangelism as hospitality. Transcending that dichotomy, Richard Osmer advances a theology of evangelism as a multifaceted act of invitation into Christ-following community. Osmer begins by exploring references to evangelism in the New Testament—both in the Gospels and in the letters of Paul. He then enters into dialogue with Karl Barth to work through ideas of church witness and the relationship of evangelism to salvation. Finally, with lucid explanations and illustrative case studies, he offers guidance for pastors, laity, and students to use as they reimagine how evangelism might best happen in their churches and missional organizations. Osmer’s approach mirrors the conviction, stated in his introduction, that our concept of evangelism must be formed and constantly reformed by keeping the Bible, church doctrine, and practical theology in conversation. Foundational to Osmer’s rendering of evangelism as invitation is the essential truth that it is Christ and the Holy Spirit who calls converts and makes disciples—not Christians. Thus, we can invite our neighbors to the wedding feast while remaining reassured that the table is already set.

Download or read book The Invitation written by Clifton Taulbert and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the midst of his success as a writer and international lecturer, Clifton Taulbert receives an unexpected invitation to supper in Allendale, South Carolina, one that will challenge every lesson of his childhood. Although the invitation is for the adult twenty-first century African American author, tagging along will be Little Cliff, the colored boy from the Mississippi Delta who is also Clifton Taulbert, bringing with him all he was taught as a child about staying in his "place" and surviving in the Jim Crow South. Transported back into a setting that looks and feels like the cotton fields and shotgun shacks of his childhood, Taulbert finds himself expected to cross racial barriers that no "colored" man could have crossed without dire consequences. The legacies of slavery and segregation lie just beneath the surface of all that Taulbert encounters in Allendale, demanding to be acknowledged. The Invitation is the story of the man and the little boy inside him wrestling with a past they both know so well, while stepping into a future that is still being determined.

Download or read book The Law of Interactions Between International Organizations written by Henner Gött and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book analyses how international law addresses interactions between international organizations. In labour governance, these interactions are ubiquitous. They offer each organization an opportunity to promote its model of labour governance, yet simultaneously expose it to adverse influence from others. The book captures this ambivalence and examines the capacity of international law to mitigate it. Based on detailed case studies of mutual influence between the International Labour Organization, the World Bank, and the Council of Europe, the book offers an in-depth analysis of the pertinent law and its key challenges, both at institutional and inter-organizational level. The author envisions a law of inter-organizational interactions as a normative framework structuring interactions and enhancing the effectiveness and legitimacy of multi-institutional governance.
