Book The Invisible Tent

Download or read book The Invisible Tent written by Ambrose Gordon and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critical evaluation of Ford Madox Ford's "novels of war, which are also novels about peace," is made in a most delightful manner. Based on a thorough knowledge of the novelist, it is enriched by keen perception and delicate taste and is couched in an informal, highly readable style. Ambrose Gordon, Jr., here analyzes seven novels by Ford that in Gordon's opinion constitute Ford's masterpieces: Parade's End (a tetralogy consisting of Some Do Not, No More Parades, A Man Could Stand Up, and The Last Post), The Marsden Case, No Enemy, and The Good Soldier. Interested in what these novels have to say, Gordon is equally interested in how they make their comment, and so approaches them through analysis of the fictional methods that Ford employed. Yet he skillfully avoids a common error of critics who become absorbed in technique—loss of contact with the book itself—by providing numerous quotations of sufficient length to indicate the novels' quality. These passages, examined in detail for content and technique, give the reader an understanding of the novel that, though not a substitute for one's own reading of the narratives, is enhanced by the interpretation of a brilliant critic. Gordon traces the development of the novelist's art in various phases: the characteristic moods and general patterns of his novels, his borrowings from the French, the effects of his association with Conrad, his concept of the novel as fairy tale, his use of scene exteriors and interiors. Gordon's discussion cuts across the seven novels in many aspects but concentrates on one novel, or a group of novels, when his ideas have less general illustration.

Book The Invisible Circus

Download or read book The Invisible Circus written by AQEEL AHMED and published by AQEEL AHMED. This book was released on 2024-04-13 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Invisible Circus There is a magical show with amazing things that can only be seen by people who really believe in magic. Summary: Ellie finds a way to get to the Invisible Circus, a place that is talked about but rarely seen, in a small town where the stranger lives in the everyday life. The beauty of this circus, a beacon of magic, can only be fully appreciated by people who are open to the world's unsolved riddles. Ellie is the perfect person to visit this magical world because she is very interested and amazed. In each chapter, Ellie goes deeper into the circus, learning about a new part of magic and important lessons that can be applied to everyone's life. From getting her golden ticket from a wise talking owl at the ticket office to her amazing trip into the Tent of Mirrors, where her images show her much more than she thought, Ellie's journey is one of amazement and self-discovery. The Acrobatic Wonders teach her the value of confidence as she flies above the earth with performers who defy gravity. There, she learns that letting go is necessary to truly fly. With its philosophical rabbit and singing plants, the Enchanted Garden helps Ellie learn to understand how other people feel by letting her see the world through their eyes. The Library of Secrets and the Invisible Menagerie tested her ideas about trust and knowledge and taught her how important it is to believe in things that can't be seen. The Firefly Circus and the Hall of Echoes both show how memories and working together are important. They also show how magic can be found in small things and how beautiful it is to share experiences. When Ellie interacts with the different characters at the circus, like the shadow puppeteer who shows her how stories can change people and the wise clown who teaches her how laughter can heal, her trip turns into a journey into the heart of what it means to believe. Ellie is pushed to find her potential and the magic inside her by the Floating Islands and the Magician's Challenge. It all comes together in a moving farewell under the stars, where she learns that the circus was more than just a place of wonder; it was a journey into the heart of magic. The story "The Invisible Circus" is more than just an adventure; it also teaches important lessons about bravery, friendship, and having faith that doesn't waver. Ellie's journey shows that magic is all around us and in everything we do, but only those who believe in it can see it. She tells us that the trip is important, that wonder is powerful, and that we all have magic inside us. Chapter 1: The Wind That Speaks Ellie was a young girl who lived in the middle of a busy, small town where the strange and the everyday often brushed against each other like leaves in the wind. Ellie had a huge mind and was full of illusions, just like most kids her age. She also found beauty in everything around her. On a day that seemed normal, Ellie's life took a sudden turn that looked like it was ending. The day had gone as planned, and I had spent hours lost in books that were full of wonderful and exciting things that happened. As the sun went down and the sky turned pink and orange, Ellie chose to explore her garden, a place she knew well and where she loved to read stories. But this evening was different from the others. Ellie could feel a soft breeze pulling her closer with a whisper that sounded like the earth itself. Ellie was interested in what the wind was saying and followed it, her heart beating fast like butterfly wings. It took her to the farthest part of her garden, where the flowers seemed to reach out and give her a soft push. There was a doorway that was hidden by the flowers and wavy vines. This wasn't just any gate, though; the light didn't shimmer; it seemed to move and flicker, casting shadows in Ellie's field of view. Ellie got closer, her big, interested eyes sparkling. It was getting louder, and she could hear the wind calling for her to go through the opening. As she reached out and ran her fingers along the smooth, sparkling surface, the whole universe seemed to stop and hold its breath. Beyond the line was the Invisible Circus, a magical and amazing world that could only be seen by people who really believed. Ellie had never seen anything like this show, not even in her wildest dreams. In this place, the everyday seemed impossible, and magic filled the air. She saw a sea of color with tents spread out in front of her. The stars were so bright that they made the tents' panels shine. The music and laughter filling the air gave a hint of the riches that were waiting to be found. Ellie moved forward and entered a realm where magic was the main way to measure being. The wind, which had been whispering behind her, was now buzzing softly in her ears. It was a constant friend who always made her feel better. As she watched, the show came to life all around her, with each new sight and sound being more amazing than the last. The Invisible Circus did not have to follow the rules that everyone else did. In this place, animals spoke human languages and told stories from places far away. Without a net, the acrobats did beautiful acrobatic dances that made it look like they were part of the wind. The Tent of Mirrors showed Ellie's face, but it also showed her hopes and dreams, giving her a glimpse of what might be if she had the guts to believe. For Ellie, every step she took in this area was a discovery trip, an adventure to the heart of magic. The circus artists treated her like one of their own, and they taught her a new lesson about how strong it is to believe in yourself and your magic. To really live, she learned, one had to laugh with the joy of a heart full of faith. To fly, she learned, one had to trust, and to see the unseen, one had to believe. Ellie's trip through the Invisible Circus was more than just a quick stop at a cool place. The trip she took to learn more about herself taught her that the magic she was looking for was inside her as well as the things around her. With all of its secrets and wonders, the circus was like a mirror, showing us the magic that's inside each of us, just waiting to be brought out by faith. Ellie knew that the Invisible Circus would always be a part of her. It was a special moment that would remind her to see beyond the obvious and find beauty in everyday things. As the night went on, it was time for her to go back to her own world. Now that she was back home, the wind that had led her to the portal was saying goodbye and offering more adventures. Because being amazed never ends in a world where magic lives in the shadows and people who believe can always reach the extraordinary. Chapter 2: The Front Desk Ellie stood in front of the strangest ticket booth in the middle of the beautiful world beyond the entry that sparkled. This wasn't the kind of ticket booth you'd find at the movies or on the train. Oh no. Its structure shone under the starry circus sky, made from whispers of magic and imaginations. It was warm and welcoming. Things all around it looked like they were waiting for Ellie, like magic was waiting for her to show up. Ellie was shocked when she saw that the shop was being run by a beautiful owl, whose feathers were the same color as the stars in the sky. This owl wasn't like any other. Its voice, which was both smart and gentle, showed how magical the circus had always been. The owl said, "Welcome, Ellie," and its eyes seemed to understand everything that was going on in space and time. A golden ticket, glowing with its own light, was held out by the owl. It promised mystery and excitement. It said, "To explore the wonders of the Invisible Circus, you must first accept this golden ticket." Ellie took out her hand, shaking with joy, and took the ticket. It was warm to the touch and looked like it was living because it was pulsing with energy. The owl then gave Ellie some advice that would help her on her journey through the circus: "This ticket is not just a pass to explore the wonders within; it is a symbol of belief. For in this circus, belief is the key that unlocks the true magic of the world around you." Ellie's first lesson in magic, which she got from the talking owl at the magical ticket office, changed her life. She knew that she had to let go of her expectations and believe in both her and the magic of the circus in order to fully see and feel the wonders of the Invisible Circus. Ellie had a golden ticket, but it was more than just a way to get in. It showed that she believed in the fantastic, which is what brought her to the circus in the first place, and it would now let her into a world where the impossible became possible. With the ticket, she could meet interesting people, see all the tents and other attractions at the circus, and see amazing magic shows. With the help of the light from her golden ticket, Ellie felt something change inside her as she walked by the ticket booth. It looked like everything around her had a new sparkle to it. The colors and sounds were more vivid and beautiful. Buying the ticket seemed to have taken her to a world where magic was a part of everyday life and opened the gates to the circus together. The talking owl smiled and watched Ellie as she walked deeper into the show. This was because the owl knew Ellie's next trip would involve more than just seeing the

Book Tent City Urbanism

Download or read book Tent City Urbanism written by Andrew Heben and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tent City Urbanism explores the intersection of the "tiny house movement" and tent cities organized by the homeless to present an accessible and sustainable housing paradigm that can improve the quality of life for everyone. While tent cities tend to evoke either sympathy or disgust, the author finds such informal settlements actually address many of the shortfalls of more formal responses to homelessness. Tent cities often exemplify self-management, direct democracy, tolerance, mutual aid, and resourceful strategies for living with less. This book presents a vision for how cities can constructively build upon these positive dynamics rather than continuing to seek evictions and pay the high costs of policing homelessness. The tiny house village provides a path forward to transitional and affordable housing within the grasp of a local community. It offers a bottom-up approach to the provision of shelter that is economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable-both for the individual and the city. The concept was first pioneered by Portland's Dignity Village, and has since been re-imagined by Eugene's Opportunity Village and Olympia's Quixote Village. Now this innovative model has emerged from the Northwest to inspire projects in Madison, Austin, and Ithaca, and is being pursued by advocacy groups throughout the country. Along with documenting and articulating the roots of this budding movement, the book provides a practical guide to help catalyze new and existing initiatives in other areas.

Book excerpt: While the Second World War raged in Europe, demanding most of Canada's military effort, an equally fierce war with Japan was going on in the Far East. Army, navy, and air force signals units in Canada kept watch on the enemy's vital radio communications. To be more effective, Number One Canadian Special Wireless Group of the Royal Canadian Signals Corps was formed to go to the Southwest Pacific war theatre for close-in radio eavesdropping. Murray describes the often zany career of the only complete signals unit Canada sent to the War in the Pacific, and the significant part it played in the Allied signals intelligence operation known as "Magic."

Book The Invisible Order

Download or read book The Invisible Order written by Olli Herranen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-04 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses the problem of institutionalised order in modern capitalist societies with highly developed division of labour. Via thorough critique and reconstruction of neo institutionalist theory, classical social theories, and critical ideology theory, The Invisible Order introduces the first relational theory of social institutions to explain in detail how individuals end up encountering institutions as objective. Thus synthesising integrative and conflicting social relations, the work calls into question deeply rooted understandings in which society is variously construed as spontaneous equilibrium, solely conflict-driven, or a set of agent-based constructions. It offers a new take on the age-old questions of classical and critical social theory and on the fundamentals of institutional and organisational theory alike. This timely and useful relational examination of social institutions reveals how complex societies can keep functioning even though their orders are constantly contradicted by multiple disordering endeavours and tendencies.

Book Invoking the Invisible in the Sahara

Download or read book Invoking the Invisible in the Sahara written by Erin Pettigrew and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative new history, Erin Pettigrew utilizes invisible forces and entities - esoteric knowledge and spirits - to show how these forms of knowledge and unseen forces have shaped social structures, religious norms, and political power in the Saharan West. Situating this ethnographic history in what became la Mauritanie under French colonial rule and, later the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Pettigrew traces the changing roles of Muslim spiritual mediators and their Islamic esoteric sciences - known locally as l'ḥjāb - over the long-term history of the region. By exploring the impact of the immaterial in the material world and demonstrating the importance of Islamic esoteric sciences in Saharan societies, she illuminates peoples' enduring reliance upon these sciences in their daily lives and argues for a new approach to historical research that takes the immaterial seriously.

Book excerpt: Pataphysica 4 present the strange "conclusion" to Alfred Jarry's 1907 Symbolist novel The She-Dragon, Part 1 having appeared in Pataphysica 2 (iUniverse, 2004). It also holds the central, pivotal chapter of the novel, which describes a battle that, while entirely modern, reads like ancient myth, conjuring such texts as the Bhagavad-Gita and Homer's Iliad. Annotations highlight Jarry's alchemical symbolism (among other things), alchemy being the ancient "art and science" studied in secret by such modern scientist/philosophers as Gottfried Leibniz and Isaac Newton. Pataphysics is the science of imaginary solutions, and for Jarry, although there is no other imagination than the scientific, modern science has simply failed to keep up with the scientific imagination. Rounding out this otherwise rectangular issue are the works of several returning authors as well as some new ones. They provide additional musings on such themes as Jarry's alchemical/cosmological play The Pope's Mustardmaker, an amorous veteran of an internal war, microcosm and macrocosm, a fugitive writer apparently obsessed with conspiracy theories and baseball, a peculiar Grimoire on a new set of "Glorious Mysteries," and a terrifying invocation of the Thelemic Law of Rabelais (Jarry's literary "master") as adapted by Crowley. Book excerpt: Purplynd is a love story wrapped in a mystery—an infant is left at a daycare on the edge of the capital city, and the struggle between utopian dreams and dystopian realities grow with the child, until one battle determines which is the most powerful. Here is how one reader describes it: Purplynd is so much more than a bunch of great words strung together by a master writer. It is a magic carpet ride to the edges of the imagination, the universe, and one’s moral fabric. It is a vehicle for an adventure of the mind and spirit. It’s not just a great read; it’s a fast ride. It took me to places beyond my imagination, showed me red places in my soul, and challenged what I had settled on as my integrity—all while on a beautiful purple voyage. It is a magical, wonderful, inspiring political and theological journey.
